Are you wondering when is the best time to lime your lawn??? In this video, I break down the "best" time to lime and what type of lime to use. What are the benefits? Can you add too much? Watch and find out!

If you have kids, put lime down in late fall/early winter in my experience. The pelletized lime takes awhile to break down and will get on kids shoes and clothes and dragged into the house if applied in "good" lawn play-time weather.

Thanks...you'd be surprised how tough it is to find how often you can throw down lime. I thought you could do it at any time so long as you don't go crazy all at once. I threw down enough lime last year to raise my front from 5.8 to about 6.8, and the backyard from 5.3 to maybe 6 or 6.1. That needs to be bumped up as I move Zoysia plugs from the front to back. Thanks again!

Hey Wicked, originally from SE Mass here, but we have a home on the Virginia Peninsula. I need a soli test, but I know our soil is seriously acidic. Weeds thrive. I am going to do a 1,000 square foot test area to see how the added lime works.

Is the rain good right after you lime though? I read that you don't want it to rain/water the lawn because it will wash away the lime and limit the effect. But idk?
@garagedancer122
@garagedancer122 Ай бұрын
@@willi6880 The soil is compacted after being beset with broadleaf plantain and clover, after hand weeding application of the lime a few days before rain is gradually making the soil workable, also broadleaf plantain doesn't like limed soil, clover could care less.

Thanks for your video. The Soil Doctor 40 lb pelletized Lime keeps getting clogged in my pull behind spreader. I gotta stop unclog slit doorway. Setting is 5-7. Maybe the walk behind spreader is a better choice. Down fall is I have 20,000 sq.ft to apply. Thinking pull behind spreader would be faster but, not necessarily.

You don’t need to split lime spreadings into 2 applications you can put a lot of lime down at one time and it’s not gonna hurt I just applied 1,000 lbs on my .5-.75 acre yard in fall

The advantage of using pelletized lime is you can use a cyclone spreader as opposed to using a drop spreader with pulverized lime. It’s faster. Of course if you use pulverized lime in a cyclone spreader it’s going to be all over you. I think drop spreaders are becoming less common these days.
@wickedgahdenguy9257
@wickedgahdenguy9257 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Jerry. Great point on the drop spreader and pulverized lime. As you mentioned, the drop spreader is becoming less popular/common, so people spread pulverized lime with their rotary spreader and it creates a cloud of white!

Thank you! I’m in New England too, so I have the same acidic soil issues. I guess I’m old fashioned I still use a Scott’s 48 inch drop spreader from when I was in business. It has become harder to find the pulverized limestone which indicates everyone is switching over to cyclone spreaders.

Also important to know your calcium, and magnesium. That is important to know to understand what line you need. We are high magnesium in So Md. so calcium needs to be increased.

Started to rake it out to fluff the grass blades up a bit from the lil bit of snow mold we have. Thanks for watching!

hello ... thank you for your beneficial information... i am curious ... i am helping a friend; who took a few fairly large pine trees out of her back yard (last summer 2022) ... the idea is to lay sod ... is it ok to apply the lime down before the sod ... to help neutralize the acidic soil ??))
@wickedgahdenguy9257
@wickedgahdenguy9257 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! Absolutely its ok to put lime down before laying the sod. Your soil is going to be acidic and needs the ph raised. The new soil from the sod farm should have properly balanced. In the future you will need to lime over it because it will be exposed to the same elements as your existing soil. i hope this helps!

Dolomite Lime versus Calcitic Lime ???? I used Calcitic last spring, it’s more expensive too.
@wayneessar7489
@wayneessar7489 Жыл бұрын
Calcitic lime has more potential or ability to change the ph. Dolomite lime is mined in different places, it has magnesium as he mentioned. The product does have less calcium in it. There is a third type of dolomite lime he did not mention and that is crystalline or coarse lime, it works much slower but in sandy soil, in places with lots of rain, it does not wash or leach past the root zone as fine ground lime will.
@SergeiWhobichakokov
@SergeiWhobichakokov Жыл бұрын
Calcitic Lime also has very little magnesium compared to Dolomitic (1.1% compared to 8%). Here NJ you just have to shop around. I picked up pulverized calcitic lime for 4.68 for a 40lb bag at Lowes. Lowes and Home Depot sell soil doctor pelletized lime for 6 or 7 dollars. But it's usually dolomitic. I was lucky to find some calcitic bags mixed in with the dolomitic. My soil test results said my soil was high with magnesium already. I suppose I wouldn't hurt it usng dolomitic, but the purpose of the soil test is to address the needs of your yard.

I don’t understand why every year in the fall after the last cut, I apply winter fertilizer thinking it should help my lawn do better in the Spring. Heck, my lawn is no better than any of my neighbours lawn and they do not add anything. Am I wasting my money?
@wickedgahdenguy9257
@wickedgahdenguy9257 Жыл бұрын
Hi Gerry. What region of country are you located? There are a few factors at play here, and one could be grass type. I have a lot more blue grass than my neighbors so my lawn can really shut down over winter, and be a little slow to wake up (this year especially). Have you had a soil test in the last couple of years? Your lawn could be lacking in 1 or 2 areas that is not addressed using your current applications. You may not need to change what you're applying, but add a supplemental application. If you have a better understanding of what macronutrients your soil needs as well as the ph, and create a plan around that, you will definitely not be wasting your money. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.

@@wickedgahdenguy9257 I’m in Ottawa Canada. As mentioned, I always use Scott’s brand (i get excellent results with their fertilizer), but the winter stuff never seems to do much. I’m open to suggestions, but keep in mind, we don’t have access to the good stuff from the good old USA. The tree huggers in this country band most of the effective herbicides & pesticides. 🤷‍♂️🇨🇦

Yes. The turf was not growing so it could not access or take up and store the product. If you normally use urea, try methylene urea, it will feed 12 to 16 weeks and should be available when spring comes.

I was thinking the same. But thought maybe I was mistaken or he’s using a chemically manmade pelletized version that is harmful!?! 🤷‍♂️ Not sure and he wasn’t specific with his “lime.” It’s a good rule to wear a mask with all dusty rotary apps. Keeps your lungs clear. But all good input and yard food for thought.
