Here I show and discuss when is the most appropriate time to use a motorcycle jack lift or any other tool and how we can all get carried away with using something when really there isn’t any real need for it.

Always remember to consider if you are removing the front wheel and forks to change a fork seal or oil, that changes the center of gravity quite a lot so the bike and lift could tip back, I put a block of wood below the back wheel to avoid this, and also remember to remove block when lowering after reassembly.

I use the lifter very often when washing and polishing my FLSB. The wheels can be turned and I don't have to crawl on the floor. But I don't normally use these straps. The motorcycle is very fixed on the lifter. Another tip, a small wooden board under the side stand and you don't need to straighten up the motorcycle. The lifter then fits under the frame.

All good points. I went the opposite direction and just purchased a table. However, I do a lot of teardown work on my bikes and that style of lift just wasn't capable of the work I was trying to accomplish in my home garage. It really comes down to being honest with the work you're going to do. If you are dreaming of doing more but so far haven't actually hit the limit with your tooling, I tend to say it's better to wait on a specialty purchase. But if you are constantly trying to work around a limitation of your current equipment, then consider the upgrade. For me I thought I would just do tires and basic maintenance and bought the lift I thought I needed. Then I caught myself reassembling two motorcycles in the last year and being in poor shape for the work I wanted to do.

Yes no doubt gold standard would be a quality table lift. Cheers

Great litter jacks I've had mine for 20 or so years. The one thing I would suggest is when using one always slide it under the bike from the side opposite the jiffy stand. This way if the bike did happen to get away from you the stand will stop it from going over.

Thanks for a few pointers, currently looking into this type of jack as I'm really missing a centre stand, as I want to get both wheels off and have SS spokes fitted.

In all honesty, if I had the proper space at home I would get a motorcycle lift. Do I really need it, no... but with my lower back issue it will make things easier to work on it over all.

I use my 1/4” and 3/8” Snapon torque wrenches and my J&S motorcycle jack on my bike all the time which is why those are also the most expensive tools I own and I love using them!

Ordered and paid for one very similar to this from ebay @ £92..... seller marked it as despatched but the courier claimed they didn't have it, so I contacted the seller to ask them to check it out and they just refunded me saying '.. buy one from some other seller...'. So meanwhile I did the job I bought it for - side stand change - with out any problem just leaning the bike against a wall and didn't bother buying one..... two weeks later and the courier left it by my front door.... while I was out working, so I got it for free and have no need for it..... anyone want a cheap bike lift ?

I pretty much just came to see your thoughts on the jack as I purchased one yesterday to do wheel change. I do like your point on over complicating things, a lot of people do it. I managed to make it home on a deflating tyre so the jack, to me, made more sense than paying for a tow to the shop and my wheel change is a little more complicated than standard so I stand to save a few $$. I've owned numerous bikes over the decades but only just purchased a jack haha

I'm always a bit wary of using straps on small bike lifts, I imagine you can apply too much pressure on any roll pins and seals causing the lift to crash. Probably not relevant, or is that Revelant? with this type of lift. I had a scissor jack on top of a bike table lift crash down on me, the roll pins had sheared and I wondered if it was due to the tie down straps of just the jack was crap.
@RevelatorAlf
@RevelatorAlf 3 жыл бұрын
Yep this lift has a lock on it to relieve the pressure on the jack but yep that’s an issue to consider if you don’t have that

I have a dyna streetbob which is 1 inch lower than the original dyna. I then put on progressive suspension which is 1 inch lower again. The bike looks great with the rear fender hugging the rear tyre, however, getting it on my stand when I want the wheels off to change tyres etc is a nightmare. The bike is now too low to get the stand under. I now have to push my bike up on to raised wooden planks and the carefully hold my bike with one hand while maneuvering the stand in between the planks and under the bike. It's a disaster waiting to happen, although I've been doing it this way for 15 years now since 2006. Now that I'm getting on a bit I have decided to buy a bike ramp/lift with a front wheel chalk and I am going to get a scissor Jack that will slide below. The reason I stopped going to dealers for any work is because everytime I got the bike back there was scratches or marks on the bike that were not there before.

I´ve got one of those, without the straps though, didn´t get them so never used it with such.. I use it almost every time when I clean or work on the bike. It´s just so much more comfortable to be sitting up on a small chair, rather then being bent over when cleaning etc. I use it as well for oil changes. Absolutely love that lift.

I SOLD MY HYDRAULIC LIFT AND USE A SCREW TYPE AS ITS EASIER TO MOVE IT ABOUT.. SOMETIMES I DONT EVEN USE THAT ONE, AS I SIMPLY SLIDE A BLOCK ON ONE SIDE AND THE SIDE STAND TO PIVOT ON.... AS I TIP THE BIKE ON THE OTHER ...AS THAT GETS THE BIKE UP ENOUGH TO CHANGE A TIRE OR SPIN THE WHEEL..........ED IN NEW YORK....
