After studying this stuff for over 35 years I think its fair to say it is an inexact science.

Yeah, practically the biggest reasons to deload other than accumulating a bunch of fatigue through training is life just kicking your ass. It's incredible how much stressors outside the gym affect your performance

My biggest deadlift PR in my life came when I took two weeks off the gym completely, not on purpose but rather because "life" happened. I swore I was going to come back to the gym so weak, but I hit a major PR. From my previous max of 495 to 585. It was my only lift I got stronger, whereas my bench for weaker. I was not on a program at the time. Just an interesting anecdotal experience.

There is new research that arbitrary deloads impair gains. I believe it's still in the preprint stages.

The only (real) reason I deload is because of an injury--or more recently--the advice of my physician. She's against me lifting HEAVY, so I stopped lifting altogether. I'm currently doing calisthetics, but that'll only get me so far.
