This is going to be a very quick introduction to A2P 10DLC or application to person messaging over 10 digit long codes.
Now that probably sounds like a lot of alphabet soup or industry jargon and it is, but the ADP 10 DLC registration process adopted by mobile carriers in 2021 to my mind really represents an opportunity and a green light for businesses to embrace and use what's arguably the most powerful communication channel of our time--that's text messaging, SMS--to reach and build relationships with their customers.
So if you've been on the sidelines unsure of whether and how to text message your leads, prospects and customers.
If you've been on the sidelines, wondering about the legality of doing so or the volume you can send, A2P 10DLC registration gives you a clear on-ramp into messaging customers legitimately.
And if you've been on the sidelines because all you've seen are bad examples of how to do bulk messaging and SMS marketing, you should understand that this is not that.
A2P 10DLC carves out the space for brands and business owners to message with their customers in a way that's more conversational.
That supports two way messaging.
That's really more along the lines of what makes text messaging so powerful in the first place.
So let's look quickly at what A2P 10DLC is, who should register, why you should register, and then we'll look at how you can very quickly and easily register using the tools we've created at Switchbird.
So without further ado what's A2p? It refers to application to person messaging as differentiated from P2P or person to person messaging.
Now, this is a little confusing. You should really think of this as all business messaging, right? Whether you send at customer care messages, automated chatbot type messages, broadcast messages, appointment reminders, you're likely using software to facilitate that.
For example, if you send any message via a Twilio number, that's considered an A2P message.
And if you are sending and receiving those messages over a 10 digit long code or a local phone number in the U S and Canada, then you're using 10DLC.
10DLC is differentiated it from 5- or 6-digit short codes, which are traditionally used for bulk messaging and SMS marketing and things like, you know, "text XYZ to this number to donate $10 to the Red Ccross" or whatever.
10DLC numbers really have a lot of advantages because you're transacting with the customer on a recognizable area code.
You've got a ton of inventory to use for not jus vanity numbers, but to give everyone on your team their own SMS enabled number. You can really have engagements with customers that resemble P2P conversations, which are so powerful--these are the things that drive open and engagement rates for text messaging. It's not, you know, that everybody's sitting around waiting to receive a broadcast from a big brand it's, it's that we use text messaging to engage with our friends, family, and the brands and businesses we care about to get things done.
And so that is really what accounts for the power of text messaging. And that is really bound to local numbers and the kind of messaging you might do in an ADP 10 DLC scenario.
So how is this different from what came in the past?
Originally all of these local numbers for landline, VOIP and mobile were intended for person to person (P2P) traffic. But what carriers have found is that businesses are using local numbers to message with consumers and that creates value both for the businesses and the consumers alike.
So we all have an interest in having an environment of trust and transparency for messaging over local phone numbers. We can mitigate the ill-effects of spam and still enable businesses to have conversational exchanges with their customers, do things like call deflection, automated self-serve chatbot messaging, etc.
So that's why we've got this new standard for registering your business for A2P 10DLC. The registration applies to really any business who sends or wants to send text messages over a local phone number in the U S and Canada.
And like I said, if you use Twilio for texting, you would want to register, cause you're doing A2P 10DLC messaging.
And what's entailed in registering? It's really just providing carriers with some basic information about who you are and the kinds of messages you send and we'll look at exactly what they require, but it's really not that onerous an ask.
Now, why would you want to register in the first place? Essentially, you receive higher throughput and better deliverability of your messages in exchange for identifying who you are and the kinds of messages you send..
Even though today carriers are not too harsh in their filtering practices on businesses that don't register, it's going to make a lot of sense I think to register and start building trust with carriers so that your messages continue to enjoy high throughput and deliverability.

Thanks Abraham! Agreed. Text messaging/SMS is such a powerful communication channel and still underused by businesses. That should change with A2P10DLC!

Does this only apply if you’re sending more than 1000 messages a day?
