This versionhas worked for me on heavier opponents in randori. One thing I’ve come across is once people become aware they try to step out. An easy modification that worked for me was to catch the ankle with my foot, almost like a sacrifice sasae.

Great execution. Thank you for demonstrating this technique! I learned it many years ago and have continued calling it yoko otoshi when teaching it even though I was corrected by a higher rank sensei saying that was not the correct name. It also works beautifully with just a straight drop at the uke's feet while throwing them over the shoulder and backrolling into the mount position bjj style.

Interessante essa técnica, utilizo nos meus treinos de jiu-jitsu, porém faço a pegada na gola e no braço do mesmo lado. Vou experimentar essa variação, parece ser muito eficaz. Oss

Hi Nick, lovely technique but is that not uki waza?
@rickfinsta2951 Жыл бұрын
The difference is really only in the direction of movement before the throw as far as I know. In Yoko Otoshi you are moving sideways and in Uki Waza you are moving backwards. Yoko Sutemi versus Ma Sutemi Waza? In practice there is a lot of overlap in many of these techniques. I would say that most throws being called Kata Guruma these days are actually a modified version of the technique demonstrated here but with different head position relative to Uke's arms.

Thank you for posting this video and your excellent demonstration. But I think this has the potential to be a dangerous throw if not executed well. Like you said, "he has nowhere to go except fall.. roll". What if uke falls directly onto his shoulder (with Tori's body weight attached) instead of rolling? This will surely do injury. How do you control for this?
@nickyonezuka-cranfordjkc4931 Жыл бұрын
If you pull the shoulder in hard, any judoka knows Ukemi and how to take this fall.
@noneandnone7770 Жыл бұрын
@Nick Yonezuka - Cranford JKC thanks for your reply. It seems to me that if the shoulder is not pulled in hard by Tori, straight down into the mat into shoulder, Uke goes. As I see it, knowledge of ukemi is probably not black and white but more of a gradation, with varying levels of skill, like other forms of knowledge. Like learning the correct technique for this throw, knowledge of the correct ukemi should be trained in advance to complement it. Like all throws in my view. Just my opinion. Thank you for your time.

one of my favorites but high risk if you miss... the best thing about this throw is the fact that its effective on opponents that are bent over in a wrestling stance because nobody fights in the posture you just depicted however it looks fantastic and is easy see the movements however we must beware of kata it will destroy your fighting form! Always practice your techniques in combination and from a fighting posture NEVER kata!
