Academy, please understand that by giving the Oscar to Chadwick Boseman out of sentimentality, you're not honoring him, you are disrespecting his legacy. You wouldn't want your tombstone to say that you invented or discovered something that you didn't because that would be undeserving and disrespectful to your first and foremost. There are plenty of other ways to honor Chadwick, and he will forever live in our hearts as one of the greatest actors of all time. But this year it is Sir Anthony Hopkins who gave the best Lead Actor performance and Chadwick would be the first to graciously admit that himself if he were alive now and were able to see the magnificent film that The Father was. Please don't let the great 90+ year old tradition of rewarding the best achievements in movie history fail on April 25th. Do the right thing. Do the noble thing. That's what Chadwick would want you to do, too.

Excellent comment. The "Best Actor" Oscar really needs to go to the best actor of the past year, and that was Anthony Hopkins. When the Academy allows other concerns to trump who put in the best performance then the whole award loses credibility. A lot of people act like it's a fait accompli, that Boseman must win the Oscar or his whole life is being dishonored. First, that's irrational nonsense; there are many ways in which he has already been and can still be honored legitimately. But second, where's the evidence that he'd want them doing this on his behalf? He did a good job, but at most he put in the third best leading actor performance of 2020. And if he wins, as he probably will, that idea that it was given to him without him actually deserving it will always hang over his win, even though that will not be Boseman's fault whatsoever.

The disrespect for Chadwick and the subtle racism that exists in this comment and the comment section in general is astounding. Boseman’s performance entered the conversation of being nominated for Best Actor and even WINNING Best Actor long before his tragic death. By suggesting that Boseman could ONLY have won the award with his death is disgusting. Hopkins performance is brilliant, but at the end of the day art is subjective. Whether people voted for Boseman or Hopkins they’re opinions are both valid as both performances are worthy. But you got what you wanted so I guess this won’t matter to you

@@NP-vn8so Its comments like this that have kept the Oscar out of the hands of black men for decades. Of course the “ONLY” way Chadwick could have won it was through sympathy to his passing. Not because he was deserving or anything WHICH HE WAS. Do your research. Only four black men have one the Oscar for best actor next to dozens of white men BECAUSE of comments like this. Comments giving an OPINION as of it were FACT. Art is subjective and therefore needs to be handled as such, with respect and acknowledgment of opinion. The disrespect to even insinuate that Chadwick could only have won through passing is disgusting.

What a movie and what a performance by this amazing actor. I have experienced dementia within my family so this movie hit hard. Watching this scene again makes me admire the level of detail this man put into his acting. The way that his eyes don't focus on his daughter but rather gaze at the wall behind her is such a relatable characteristic of people with this disease. And he does it brilliantly.

This movie don't just put you in the role of Anthony. You wear Anne shoes by suffering the struggle of having a relative with this or any other health condition. The scene when she drops the mug and put it in the trashcan is meaningful: "You have to get rid of what is broken" on your head you get to think it's better for that person to be dead and it's shocking the way the movie get us in both sides of the coin

As the director has described, this film is an experience more than a story. 2020 has given me some of the best on-screen horrors (and more) from 'The Father' and 'Sound of Metal'. I guess there really isn't anything scarier than losing your own identity.

I sometimes think many young people see the future, the state of the world, and becoming 'adult' as so awful and depressing, that they prefer staying children and watching only 'superheroes' and monsters fight it out. Entertainment is far preferable than confrontation with all the existential dread they feel coming at them.

I don't agree with the freaks who are making calls to the academy to award Hopkins, yet have you seen all the films? If Boseman were alive, would he have such a chance of winning the Oscar this year? And after all, who is Oscar for? For the actors, dead or alive, or to please the audience? Why do people discuss the awards more than the films themselves? I hope that black cinema, that non-white cinema, that cinema outside the Europe-USA axis will continue to thrive regardless of awards.
