A brief look into how anvils used to be forged and forge welded by the build-up method.
The anvils pattern is a Southern German pattern with dubble feet and features a supported breast with upsetting block.
Forged together with Jeroen Smit at his workshop.

So glad to see you back Joey! You are one of the main reasons I wanted to get to know forge welding so well. You are the welding pro and you were always open and honest with mistakes so we could all learn. I loved your videos

I had no idea. I thought the base was cast, and then the face was forge welded on. I never thought you could just build it up in chunks. Super cool video, thanks.

Anvils have been made every which way; Cast, forged from one piece, forge welded from steel chunks, cast base and steel top. It is what was easiest to produce to yield the best product for any given place.

Very interesting, sir. I'd no idea how it was done until I saw this. It also demonstrates how critical timing can be, not just with the temperature and working time. It can be uncomfortable and even embarrassing for two tools to come in contact while aiming for the same spot... (I'm terrible, I know.)
