We already have that in 3d tablet from Leia that gives way higher 3D quality of taking to each other. It's only as long as you look at the tablet though.

As I said to someone else in here, it's bonkers to think that Meta has at least talked about things like the personas and watching movies in VR and so on for a long time now, and yet Apple somehow just leapfrogged it in those two important categories. I should be able to sit right now and watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie in stereoscopic 3D on my Quest 3 and invite my mate across to watch it with me in passthrough mode and with him having a high quality avatar. But, nope, the best I can do right now is watch a 2D version of The Super Mario Bros. Movie with some cartoon in a clunky app like Bigscreen that just makes me want to remove everyone else. Meta completely dropped the ball.

Well the headset costs $3500, I’d expect it to have some features that explode the cost of every meta/quest headset combined. And this isn’t me shitting on Apple, but for $3500 and the current usability of the device I still think they have a long way to go

I am really annoyed and have been for years that we have very little to nothing in regards to 3D movies. the Fandango app had the only 3D movies available to purchase for a while and then they combined to VUDU Fandango and now both apps are unavailable and the 3 movies I purchased are now lost to me and I only have the dozen or so crappy 3D movies to rent on Big Screen that have been there forever and nobody at Big Screen has bothered to add any fresh new content in years. 3D movie content should be available for us to buy and watch using the Amazon VR app and they should also have some 3D movies for Netflix and Hulu subscribers. All of these companies are lazy as F'k.

@@inceptional You can and have been able to for years. Big screen does 3D movies. VRChat Does all of that and and some, I have been watching 3D movies with high quality avatars and sound in VR for years and many of my friends use Quests. Photo realistic avatars require a huge amount of data, there's a reason you can only see them from one direction and they are kind of blurry in AVP. Its cool what they did, not really that new though.

@@inceptional I mean, the way they leapfrogged Meta was by bringing out a headset that costs seven times more. IMHO, Meta is focused on XR for the masses, Apple is focused on making people want the product and getting people used to dropping serious dollars for that product.

I don't like Apple products in general, and highly skeptical of vision pro. But that tech is simply mind blowing and insanely awesome. Hats off.

These avatars are the kind of thing that will take VR/AR to the next level. I can't wait til other headsets can copy this or Apple makes these more available. Having space in real life to hangout is best but this could be the next best thing. Watching movies, or even concerts with this is going to be really cool.

You conclude that the high costs of VR gear are not worth it for this. And that's true when the people that you love live with you or near you. But for people in situations where their loved ones are far away and VR technology is the only way they can be together, how much is it worth then? It's already been possible to have these kinds of in person experiences using VRChat for years. And I don't think most people realize the level of sophistication and capability which has already been in use there with powerful PCVR gear. Most people have only seen Meta's cartoony legless avatars running on mobile VR. What Vision Pro is bringing to the table is the ability to do it with an automatically generated avatar which is a replica of your RL self. And that's going to bring in a whole other group of people to experiencing what VR technology is uniquely capable of.

For less then 500£ you can get 3d tablet that gives you much higher quality 3d video chat in 4k without 3d glasses. It's not in the random places in your room but you can have the body lol. Don't get me wrong vison pro is great but that's nothing new. They only problem was always convincing your family to buy dedicated device for minimum 500£. Trying to convince them to spend 7 times more will be even harder.

​@@Matt-bp5vy A 3D display is not the same thing as VR. It's still just a display. The person you're trying to be with is still locked behind glass. What you're talking about is still just a video call. It's not an in person kind of experience and does not compare.

With an iPhone.. You can do 3D scans.. Now I honestly truly can't wait for full body 3D scans with either your iPhone or vision pro and import into vision to create a full body avatar... Train an ai on your body movement, jumps, etc and then begin appearing in full.. I really can't wait for that.. Honestly excited for that..

Did you know that "HUGS: Human Gaussian Splats" is a technology developed by Apple's own Machine Learning research team? They published a research paper on HUGS in 2023. It creates editable 3D avatars from short video clips. I think Apple will use this technology in the future.

If Apple employed the cameras on the iPhone and iPad; one at the X axis and the other 90° at a Y axis; they should be able to have really good full body tracking. I mean, that technology exists now in “traditional” XR for full body tracking. Given all the parts would be inside the Apple ecosystem, I would assume Apple should be able to do this even better???

I like my Meta Quest 3 Avatar. It feels like I am a cartoon character in a cartoon world. But, it would be nice to have the option for realistic looking avatars as well. Like these on the Apple Vision Pro. I like them both.

Apple products will always be out of reach of most people, especially with our dying economy, but I think the Meta Quest 4 will likely offer something like this or better for a decent price. I don't like either company, but it's going to be a while until a 3rd party app does the same. I'd love to see Discord or Valve do something like this but that's a distant dream.

Its just not convenient yet though. Setting up a hang out call through this thing you both have to put on and have charged up. I just dont see vision pro as something you'll just have on you when someone tries to call.

Sadly, many (most?) of us will never get to try this on the VP due to the cost. Hopefully one day an affordable headset will enable us to experience this kind of co-presence...

It's not going to be a problem. Every Apple Vision Pro owner (Myself included) is a paying Beta Tester for the newest tech. I believe they HAD to get a device out in the field for this to happen, and it had to include EVERYTHING so they could discern what process actually stick and what things are frivolous (like IMO the outside screen). Once desire and demand are quantified, then the REAL FUN and development begins to provide this experience to the masses. I'm pretty sure Apple did not WANT to release a $3500 headset, but to get the info they needed they pretty much had to. It's exciting to see where this will all go. Meta WILL try, and maybe succeed. But the disconnect I have seen so far with their clunky UI's and poor implementations thus far has not inspired a lot of confidence. And I'm no meta hater. I have ALL of their headsets, starting with the CV1. (Yes even including the ludicrous 3DOF "Go"), and its never their hardware expertise that has given me problems. Like them or not, Apple has ALWAYS been the masters of user interface and simplicity. The philosophy of "it just works" has changed countless industries over time starting with the GUI of the original Macintosh, going through the revolutionary design of the first iPhone. (Having lived through it, you have no idea how just clunk and user UNFRIENDLY cell phones were prior to that. Gosh. This went on too long. Sorry. :)

I'm not too impressed with execution on these things yet, but I recognize that a lot of this is "first time" stuff and will get better. Most of all I am happy that, like you pointed out, this will make the other XR companies think about stepping up their game. BTW these realistic 3D avatars based on facial scan is something Meta had actually already showed off as something they were developing. Apple just beat them to release.
