The office environment has always. been designed for extroverts and micromanagers which is the issue. Now with a society moving deeper into tech and computer-based work which is normally dominanted by introverts who deal into detail-oriented tasks, commuting to work seems ridiculous if for any reason other than to socialize with co-workers.

Quite a stretch to say either extroverts or introverts dominates detail-oriented tasks. It’s irrelevant how extroverted or introverted you are to be detail-oriented. Totally different characteristics that do not increase or decrease the likelihood of someone being detail-oriented.

I'm government imployed. It is law now in my country to be able to work form home. I used to spent up to 4 hours in public transport a day. I just show up 1 day a week to show my face now, because my boss likes to see my face once in a while. A shame it took a pandemic for this change. I have been working from home partially before 2020 and have been wondering since why people waste time and money on doing something you could do from home. I don't need to be physically at the office to do my job. Yes I understand some people do. For social interactions. I don't.

I don't understand the reasoning for why hybrid work will be detrimental to working moms. Wouldn't this make it much easier to balance work and childcare, especially when the partner also works under a hybrid model? It should be even more beneficial for single moms because they can save time commuting and are more flexible picking up their kids from kindergarten/school etc.
@DamianBill
@DamianBill Жыл бұрын
They won't have peace of mind to work from home with their kids around.
@nerdmommy7114
@nerdmommy7114 Жыл бұрын
Because work life balance is a myth. If a mom is at home, she is expected (or be felt guilty) to focus on childcare, whether she is working or not. It is not easy to balance taking care of kids and working at the same time. The only times a mom has free time to work is when the kids are busy playing (which might only last for 10 minutes), kids are sleeping, kids are being taken care of by someone else, or if kids are at school or somewhere not at home. Home is just very distracting. This is the reason why moms, and likely most working parents, use tablets/ipads as "babysitters". And parents who allow that are stigmatized. There is a lot more going on when it comes to working moms that work at home.

I called this when the pandemic first broke out and we all went home. But i took it to another level. i think that the demand to work in offices not even associated with your company will become a trend. It will be a persons choice if they WFH or WH (work hybrid), and many young single people will pay membership to local office spaces with cool trendy concepts, like a café that has all the office amenities and is filled with other diverse young professionals from different fields. I think about how limited my social circle has gotten in my thirties, and how most people i work with are older and the office is far away. wouldn't it be nice if my close buddy who also works from home down the street from me, could go to the same office space once or twice a week and grab lunch together at a local place in our urban neighborhood? Also i think working vacations will become an industry to itself, with Airbnb and other services capitalizing on the notion of designing rentals for the WFH traveler or a group of WFH travelers. It may seem goofy, but if i can finish up my job and close my computer at the end of the day and go see a concert in a new city, or grab local food in a new country, or get some afternoon sunshine on a beach and a dip in the ocean for a long weekend before going back to somewhere north and cold, why not? i still get vacation time besides that anyways. Itsa great new evolution im excited to live through, if the global economy doesnt collapse that is....

The problem with this idea surrounds trade secrets, conflicts of interest, sensitive information, etc. There's no way a regulator at the SEC is going to be allowed to work next to an investment analyst at Goldman Sachs, in a shared office space.
@ryanfitzalan8634
@ryanfitzalan8634 Жыл бұрын
@@John-dw6jb agreed. those sorts of workers will probably have a difficult time gaining flexibility about their work from home situations, i assume that's already an issue for some. But surprisingly i know some people in sensitive government positions, who had their entire office cleared out and the building sold and the at home environment made permanent, because it saved big bucks to not have a building. regardless, of how anyone feels about WFH, its an employees marketplace and so long as it stays that way workers can make demands. Down the road legal challenges will come about from various things happening and some sort of policy forward will result.

That makes work sound so much more appealing. The social aspect, or lack of it as you point out, can be overcome by working with friends. I was only able to do this a few times while working on a gig project on weekends and during my vacation time and it was mostly online but what a eye opener that was. We did the majority of our work from our home offices but were in constant contact by email and phone. This was the late 1990s so texting wasn’t as viable. We met in person daily for coffee or dinner - it helped that most of us lived in the same neighbourhood - to discuss the project, resolve problems and so on. I could focus so much better and work longer hours without getting tired. Sometimes it didn’t seem like work at all because of the social aspect. What’s more it seemed to work well for both the extroverts and introverts among us.

I wish these changes had happened before I retired. I was always happier during the times when I could work at home. The prime reason I retired early was because of the commute and mine wasn’t even that bad. Why is the percentage of people wanting hybrid work lower for Europe and highest in the U.S.? Is it because European public transit is better? Is it density? Living closer to work? Or is it cultural?
@JH-gf4cm

Sorry to hear you couldn’t benefit from it. I’ve been hybrid working for almost a decade and it has been such a great transition for my career. My productivity was always highest when working from home and it made me more motivated to make best use of my time in the office. The pandemic changed that - very different dynamic when everyone was working from home - but I think overall hybrid working is inevitable and superior. I was very surprised to see Europe with a lower rate than other regions- if anything I would expect it to be the highest. I wonder what the age range is. One thing to consider is the impact on younger workers - I think they could be disproportionately negatively impacted by remote working unless companies enact well structured policies to balance in person with remote work. We still need mentoring and I think that’s much easier to provide in person
@andersonmark5765

I can guess the reason. It may have to do with the fact that Americans work much longer hours than Europeans (the average American works 500 hours more per year than the average European.) I therefore assume that we American would benefit more by working remotely and having less commuting time.

I don't have hybrid working schedule. I work from home remotely. The reason is simple. If my employer says I have to come risk get a fatal illness, then I quit and go work somewhere that allows arbitrary remote. If I can't find that right away, I stay unemployed for a bit and live off my savings. I will also go the the union, and organize other workers so that we collectively put our foot down at the greedy extermination. This way, the workers have more power over the employer, allowing them to improve their working conditions, as well as strengthen the power of the working class over the capitalist class as a whole, because the latter is to be removed in order to advance society forward.

We're not "post-pandemic" yet. (I'm not even sure we're "getting there.") People just WANT it to be "post-pandemic" so we're calling this era that. COVID is still very much around, not yet declared endemic, so until that happens, we're still technically IN the pandemic. But it is, of course, important for companies to be looking ahead to how they want to design their offices, because truly, the majority of people who CAN work from home prefer to keep doing so if they can, and, like this video says, going in for the face-to-face interactions and the more "off-the-cuff" idea generation that can engender.

There is all this talk about hybrid and remote work because the people who talk for a living do pure office work where they work at a desk, but that excludes: retail, all manufacturing, most scientific/lab jobs, artist/craft jobs, creative jobs like photography or movie editors, etc. Yes journalists can work from home. If you just need a personal computer to do your work you can work from anywhere. However longer term those jobs will just be globalized. If you can have workers productive on a pure remote basis then you can locate them anywhere. It might be wise to locate them where you have a footprint but it might be wiser to minimize costs. This has done a long transition for telework for those who can and want to all at once rather than slowly. It will decrease use of commercial property for a while but just like people came back to travel the virtues of being in person are going to come back too. People didn't sent business travelers across the world to meet face to face to close major deals for fun. Personal human relationships tend to be formed in person. That has a real effect on teaming and business also. So there will of course be a lot more remote work but there will still be a lot of office and in person work that returns. Those in these comments that say employers that don't allow this are myopic from a tight labor market where workers have choice. Once there is high unemployment, employers that want workers back in the office will get them and establish any norms they want again.

Well I live in a conservative country, had a job where most people think outdated. But I always had this view of offices - it's not the place where you had to go, but rather a place where you want to go. One of the best post pandemic effect is now companies want talented people and not the other way, Americans left their jobs. I think in last century workers union played its role, and now your economy will significantly relish because of this.

Even though I like the idea of hybrid working and having more integrated city planning, I think one of the other issues of it is that paired with the soaring energy bills, say if it's winter: If you work in an office, you don't have to have the heating on while you are away, but if people are going to be home more that means you will have to pay more utility bills just by being at home.
@polishtheday
@polishtheday Жыл бұрын
Where I live you have to keep the heat on to keep water pipes from freezing. Maybe there are other people at home or you live in an apartment building where the temperature isn’t within your control. There’s also the cost of warming up the car - not necessary but many do it for convenience - and driving to work instead of taking public transit because you’d be miserable waiting for the bus. That office building needs to be heated too.

Remote work is half a chance half a challenge. Concerning postive aspects, the main one is time spent in public transportation. Salaries can allocate this time to other activities, like enjoying moments with family, especially in the morning. Also, this way of working help to increase productivity. Indeed, studies show that time spending doing ancilliary activities is much more important at the office than at home. Concerning negative aspects, loneliness is definitely a major feature. It can lead to depression for isolated individuals. Working at home could be detrimental for effectiveness because workers are subjected to forgetfulness. It is undeniable that this working style is included in workers habits nowadays. It is even a prerequisite in job searches. Some people will give priority to working environment than the salary.

TBH there were office spaces like this that existed pre-pandemic. This isn’t a new concept in any means. Also, it’s not so much about the office space, but other factors like commute time to work, finding the right work-life balance when you spend so much time at work which are making employees prefer permanent WFH. Office space with the best facilities are not the motivators anymore.

Remote working means measuring progress better not just head counting. Offices are a huge business for building owners and for service providers, moving away from the office is going to be opposed by them. In a post-pandemic, the office just makes sense to socialize and for strategy, office day is way less productive than the rest of days.

They will be hot cotting . Your desk will be yours Monday Wednesday Friday . Tuesday Thursday Saturday it will be someone else's. If they can shift commercial real estate costs to workers they will. And the home will be filled with more work angst and anomie. Because fewer people will actually bond and face time. The tech interface means more impersonal behavior by multinationals and nationals . The ice cube effect will set in and the cost cutting factor and population boom will drive it. But you may not drive so much.

We need to understand that being at the top of the pyramid of creation means that everything we do trickles down the structure, from top to bottom. When it reaches the bottom, the inanimate level of reality, from which everything grows, it changes it. If we ooze ill-will, it creates negative changes throughout the system, which manifest in increasingly extreme climatic and geological events. In other words, when human relationships go out of balance, everything goes out of balance. When our relations become extreme, everything becomes extreme; when we become violent, everything becomes violent. Each summer, the ramifications of the linkage between our relations and our world become more extreme, until we acknowledge that everything that exists, exists in a connected, hierarchical system and that whoever is at the top determines the state of the rest of the system. It is not as if previously, we were better people than we are today. It is simply that there were fewer people, and therefore fewer elements that exude ill will. Also, relationships between people in the past were less toxic than they are today. While there are fewer wars today than ever, the levels of suspicion and alienation between people are skyrocketing, to the point where people can no longer trust their own family members. As a result, wars between countries are rarer than ever, but divorce rates, domestic violence, and violence in the community, are at an all-time high. Even the internet, which we invented purportedly in order to connect people, is being used to abuse, deceive, and exploit people. The world-wide-web proves that everything we create, we use against others. When there is such a negative element in a system, and that element is at the top of the system, how can the entire system not go awry? Therefore, if we want the weather to cool, the sea-level to drop, and the storms to subside, we must cool the fire and calm the storms between us. Mutual concern, mutual responsibility, or at least the knowledge that we are dependent on each other, are necessary in order to restore balance in our world at all levels, from the ground we walk on to the hatred in our hearts.

A hybrid model probably won’t benefit those whom are just starting out on their careers. They are likely living with parents or a roommate and are looking to learn from more seasoned colleagues. So they’d want to go in the office for space to work, to network, build skills, etc, but it’d be a detriment to them if no one is really there on Monday or Friday to talk things out with 😅

Working from home saves most folks hours in their day from having to commute. Not only this, but the savings in wear-n-tear, gasoline expenses, and opportunity costs are a huge reason why we shouldnt return to the old 40 hour work week (ie 60 hour work week with time commuting) . We have a real opportunity here to better our lives and our work-life balance that companies claim they are so concerned about. And we have a great opportunity to fix some of the causes of climate change by drastically reducing the fuel consumption of having so many folks drive to/from work everyday! The corporate real estate lobby and proponents of the 20th Century economic model would have us believe that working from the office is better - is best. I call BS.

This is called society resting on its laurels. Trying to redesign workplace environment as if it's going to increase productivity in double-digit figures is madness. This kind of mentality is what makes artificial (fake) productivity possible where company CEOs are able raise billions of dollars for a company that has yet to turn a profit solely by using corporate newspeak and social media to pump their yet-to-be products/services. This trend started in Silicon Valley and it is very scary to see it spreading across the globe. Unemployment in the US is 3.9% while inflation is 9.1% (really 15-20%), housing is unaffordable, debt levels are at all-time highs and at a point of no return. How can this be if so many people are employed? The answer lies in the previous statement. Fake productivity spurred on by helicopter money. All that money is supporting unprofitable companies (40% of S&P companies have negative earnings). Fake fortunes (YT, Instagram, do-nothing celebrities making millions), etc. etc. You can't sustain an steroid economy forever. Every day the bucket go to the well. One day the bottom will fall out.
