How are Ukraine's attacks on Crimea playing in Russia? | DW News

The Russian-installed governor of Sevastopol says the Crimean Peninsula has been the target of fresh missile strikes. He reported air defense systems have intercepted rockets. A day earlier, Ukraine's military struck the headquarters of Russia's Black Sea Fleet.
Online footage shows the moment of the attack. Russia says its air defense systems shot down five incoming missiles and one serviceman is missing. Kyiv says several senior Russian navy commanders were killed in the strike and dozens more injured.
Meanwhile US media reports suggest Washington plans to send long-range missiles to Ukraine. It's claimed Kyiv will get the Army Tactical Missile System - or ATACMS missiles - that have a range of up to 300 kilometers. Ukraine has repeatedly asked for the weapons. The rockets would enable Kyiv to strike targets far behind the frontlines in Russian occupied territory.

That’s just for domestic consumption back in Russia - they keep telling their citizens that Ukraine is full of NATO troops as it’s easier than admitting that they can’t cope with Ukrainian forces operating alone in the field. Yes Ukraine is getting a lot of old outdated materiel from the international community, but most of that is still at least a generation ahead of most of Russias equipment.

While true NATO isn't flying sorties, driving tanks, or shooting bullets, that NATO is managing this war is incontrovertible. All intel flows thru Brussels, all logistical trains are directed from Brussels, all offensive operations are through Brussels... Kyiv supplies the men and manages Regiment level ops. I actually wondered from Feb 2022 why Russia did not target the government buildings in Kiev. If I were Putin, I should have done that after I knew Russia could not catch Kiev. It was very early to know that, like 2 or 3 weeks after the war broke out.

Russia has less territory to defend with anti-air. Not only do they control a much smaller part of Ukraine, the Kyiv government isn't randomly attacking civilian areas. Russia should be able to deploy its anti-air equipment more effectively. Still they are being constantly embarrassed. They can't even defend targets inside Russia, where Ukraine again focuses on military targets and can't even use NATO-provided missiles. So they must make due with drones only and can't overwhelm the system with a variety of targets. Sevastopol has got to be at the top of any list of potential targets. The Russians can not protect the dry dock and a few days later still can't protect the base. One has to wonder as to the poor quality of Russian anti-air defense or the quality of the men manning that equipment or... why not both?

I said this before and I will say it again, the war will come to an end when the average Russian citizen starts feeling the pain and fear of the conflict, not while they are still vacationing in Crimea and Europe, and watching the war from a few blocks away like some made for television documentary. So yes Ukraine needs to inflict the same level of destruction to the Russian cities as Russia has done to Ukraine.
