How are we saved according to Orthodoxy?
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, One God. Amen.
As per Christians, how is it that humanity is saved? And what does salvation actually entail? This very subject of how salvation is effected in the life of the believer is one that has been heavily debated by many. Until today, in many Christian circles, much discussion has been had as to how we are saved by God. This subject matter is called Soteriology - specifically the theology dealing with salvation. Today, we hope to introduce the conversation by having a very high level discussion about how Orthodox Christianity approaches the subject.

hi Jenny, in true Orthodoxy we live the Sacred Scriptures. In my Christian Community we read the Bible in the original language of Koine Greek we have some members in our community who speak Aramaic. Aramaic and Koine Greek were the languages used by Jesus and the Apostles. We have an unbroken continuity with the Apostles. @@thetej2227 Look even further east😄. I have an Oriental Orthodox background. Believe me it's the worst form of Christianity I have ever seen. It's full of paganism and meaningless traditions and rituals that contradict the Bible. Eastern Orthodoxy is a little better. I got saved 31 years ago. It was through clear teaching of the Gospel, Christ, came, died and was resurrected. Salvation is likened to a birth and I think that is what is missing in his generally good speech. One is saved by faith in Christ alone, and once somebody is sealed by Holy Spirit he is hidden in Christ and not under wrath of God.

Good works are a product, fruit, of Holy Spirit whom we receive by faith only. There is no synergism in salvation act of God, our part is to believe in finished work of Christ, that is all. Repentance is a state that leads to salvation by faith, it is not something that saves by itself. Judas repented but didn't have faith. Faith alone saves. The faith that came out of repented heart.

PSA is a heresy in Orthodoxy
@thomasburke9060
@thomasburke9060 Жыл бұрын
Inclusively. However, at the beginning of this section he refers to God's honor being offended, which is not the sort of thing adherents of PSA tend to say. The notion of God's honor being offended was an emphasis of Anselm, the 11th century archbishop of Canterbury. He pioneered the satisfaction family of models of atonement, of which PSA is a later development. PSA focuses more on the satisfaction of divine justice than on God's honor. The whole satisfaction family is difficult to reconcile with Orthodoxy because they all make it seem as if God is in want of something because of the rebellious actions of humanity, and the satisfaction of that want is necessary in order for God to be able to reconcile humanity to Himself. But of course God cannot be wanting for anything.

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” James says: ''So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.'' Paul writes: ''For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.'' This is how you are saved.

@@thomasburke9060 sorry i just replied quickly. I am not ethnicly copt. I have been following coptic church about 9 years but i had not possibilty to convert to it becouse in my country we dont have coptic church. I have also planned to convert to byzantine orthodox church becouse we have byzantine church. But i dont feel myself home in byzantine church. Culturally i like coptic church more. Also there something very different in byzantine church compared to oriental churches... Byzantine church is somehow very melancholic and dark while oriental churches are very energetic and bright. You can feel this in hymns, doxologyas, prayers, icons, in music and art generally etc. Also coptic church is much more alive. Young people are actively in church unlike in european byzantine ones. Also teaching is very strong and clear in coptic church. Of course all this can be just my own experience. This is becouse i can listen coptic church teachings becouse i know arabic but i can not listen to most of byzantine orthodox sermons becouse i dont know their language. But the teachings that i have heard from byzantine church is not so spiritially strong than in coptic church. Coptic orthodox church is very strict though. You cannot marry from other sects. You cannot divorce. You must be babtized againg if you convert to coptic orthodoxy even if you had been babtized before. Coptic orthodox church does sign of the cross in the old way: from up to down and frim left to right. Just like catholics do. Byzantine ones do it opposite direction. The bread in coptic orthodox church is dfferent than in byzantine one. There are different saints. Byzantine orthodox church has teaching of hesychism and energies of god. All this is has been developed in west and it was not in original church and it was not in the year 451. Coptic orthodox church did not emphais on these.... This is just quick reply and just my personal experience. If you have possibilyvto go to coptic church you should and you should talk to some priest

@@gabrielgabriel5177 It sounds like I need to clear up my remark about your nationalistic emphasis. Consider what the "Coptic Orthodox Church" is fundamentally. It is the Church as it took root in Alexandria and then spread throughout Egypt. By the end of antiquity, it was officially called the "Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa". This is because it was a regional church commissioned with the care of all Christian peoples in Africa. This universally African jurisdiction and mission is what historically defined the church. The notion of the church being the "Coptic church" is relatively recent, and reflects a nationalistic degradation of the church's sense of its mission. This is why I asked you why you're emphasizing a national identity so much, because it's not what the church fundamentally is, and it reflects a betrayal of its mission. The question is all the more salient now that I know that you're not yourself Egyptian.

Perhaps you could help me with something. As I’m studying Orthodoxy, I see the patristic teaching for baptism. But then I see the “on the ground” reality of it in the Orthodox Church and it becomes very confusing and frankly, unsettling. There are many videos of infant baptisms where the priest is aggressively dunking babies into baptismal fonts. Some go head first, some swing the baby aggressively, some fully immerse, and some dunk the head and then the feet and alternate. Why is this? Why the aggression with infants? Why would this not be done delicately and with tenderness? This could easily prove to be my greatest Hang-up with the eastern traditions. I watch some of these and it seriously looks evil the way they handle these precious children.
@CopticOrthodoxAnswers
@CopticOrthodoxAnswers 10 ай бұрын
Dear Micah, I pray you are well. We can assure you that these videos are the rare exceptions. As a priest I’m very uncomfortable myself with those types of baptisms. Usually children are handled with much care as they are still very fragile. I could only assume that the idea behind those types of videos is to demonstrate the priest’s skill in baptizing, which is completely inappropriate. Mistakes can happen.

@@thomasburke9060 That's a lie! The only reason believers may not understand God's written word is because their heads are so full of the false doctrines from the traditions of men. It will also be impossible without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit; so first, you have to be a believer. The Holy Spirit reliably interprets the Scriptures to all who ask the Father. BUT, not many want the truth; and that's a fact. “The matter is quite simple. The bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand, we are obliged to act accordingly. Take any words in the New Testament and forget everything except pledging yourself to act accordingly. My God, you will say, if I do that my whole life will be ruined. How would I ever get on in the world? Herein lies the real place of Christian scholarship. Christian scholarship is the Church’s prodigious invention to defend itself against the Bible, to ensure that we can continue to be good Christians without the Bible coming too close. Oh, priceless scholarship, what would we do without you? Dreadful it is to fall into the hands of the living God. Yes it is even dreadful to be alone with the New Testament.” - Kierkegaard

Salvation is free and not based on good works. And Jesus had to die on the cross for us to atone. Why else did He die and rise? It doesn't matter what your so called saints claim.

Read Ephesians chapter 2 verses 8-9. This guy is confused. It doesn’t matter what the book of “wisdom” says. Scripture is our only authority.

That's very ignorant. The Book of Wisdom is in the Catholic and Orthodox canon, and has been since before the Reformation. In our Canon it is part of the Apocrypha. So to say Scripture is our only authority... Well, they're reading from their Scriptural Canon which is older than ours

We agree with Eph 2:8-9, works that *originate* in us do not save. But read Eph 2:10, there are works that originate in God and these do save. Please see Romans 2:6-7. The reason they save is because they are produced by God’s grace.

@@Mkvine Where in Ephesians 2:10 is it talking about works that save? You see something which isn‘t there.

@@Skanderbeg_777 I said these works originate with God via his grace. And if you look at Romans 2, there it does talk about works that save when done with God’s grace.

@@Mkvine Yes all our works originate via God‘s grace, but your assumption/interpretation of Romans 2:13 speaking of works (we perform by God‘s grace that can save us) is totally wrong and you ignore what Jesus sais what this „work“ is. Let me first quote Ambrosiaster on Romans 2:13: Paul says this because those who hear the law are not justified unless they believe in Christ, whom the law itself has promised. This is what it means to keep the law. For how does someone who does not believe the law keep it, when he does not receive the One to whom the law bears witness? But the one who appears not to be under the law because he is uncircumcised in his flesh, if he believes in Christ, may be said to have kept the law. And he who says he is in the law, i.e., the Jew, because what is said in the law does not penetrate to his mind, is not a doer of the law but a hearer only, for he does not believe in the Christ who is written about in the law, as Philip said to Nathanael: “We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote.” Commentary on Paul’s Epistles. Now to John 6:28-29 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” This passage is the key to understand what is meant by the word work. Cyrill of Alexandria comments on this: This is the work of God that ye should believe on Him whom He sent. For of a truth better than the legal and typical worship is the salvation through faith and the grace that justifieth than the commandment that condemneth.
