Here's the nerdy explanation: Typically, short term memory can only store up to around six or seven individual things at a time. Say, six or seven individual numbers or letters. But if you were to put those letters/numbers into easily recognizable groups, like words or larger numbers, each of those groups would count as an individual thing to remember, thus allowing you to remember more.
