@@BeerIndependence4All I haven't seen these camps in our national or provincial parks. These are very typically very heavily policed and have very limited access to the public. On public land this is very different and we can pack the heat! In fact we go through firearms, bear spray, bear awareness and drug lab awareness as part of annual training. Yep , firearms all the time but concealed , no percentage in advertising. My favorite item is non lethal even thought it makes you wish you were dead. It's Bear Spray with a range of 30 feet. I like it since it's good for all sorts of varmints both 2 or 4 legged ones. I backpack or canoe and my campsites are always out of sight and hidden. Old habits are hard to break.

Thanks for confirming that. I was considering the bear spray and also a taser, although I do have a Glock. I don't like the idea of someone getting close enough to even consider using a knife; at my age I don't want to be arm wrestling and chance it gets turned on me. But bear spray can ward off intruders at a distance. A taser is a little easier to hang from my belt along with pepper spray.

-- Pending where I am and what season, I always have a Mossberg 12g and a Glock 19 on hand. My daughter is 7, attends private military academy (never send my children to public schools) so she's certified with AR platforms and getting there with pistols (final beginners course next year). I don't go anywhere unarmed. And I always go with a couple teammates and their families (save state campgrounds which I find safe enough - least the ones around here). I'll ask KZbinrs that do off the grid camping (there's a bunch of them) questions. How much does your kit weigh, what brand is this, that, etc. They're happy to answer until (especially the women that go out alone) I ask them what sort of firearm do you carry for protection. Half of them don't answer (in such a manor that leads me to believe they're not carrying), the other half say, 'A gun? Oh, heavens no I don't carry.' Of course I carry in bear country too, but 99 percent of the time if you encounter an aggressive bear, you've done one or multiple things wrong, or, you're out during the wrong time of the season. Had more problems with people similar to your experience than aggressive animals. Good advice you have there, thumbs up. But I'd stress, off the grid camping requires a buddy system (you have it) and the correct firearms. If I can't camp in an area because it doesn't allow firearms, most of the time I don't camp there. Sometimes I just break the law (don't recommend that). I'd rather be alive than dead.

Moral here? Don’t do any solo camping or backpacking. I backbacked on the Old Chimney Trail in Great Smoky Mountains with a friend. Set up camp at a lean-to as darkness encroached. It began to rain. A stranger entered camp. He was wearing a garbage bag serving as a rain parka. He also had on cutoff blue Jeans and Converse basketball shoes. Me and my friend got the impression this guy was an escaped prisoner or someone on the run from the law. At any rate, no sleep because we had to keep our eyes on this guy as well as keep our knives handy. At dawn we ate some oatmeal and broke camp, continuing our hike into Gatlinburg where we finally got a good nights rest at a Holiday Inn.

To add to this topic. If you are with a spouse or significant other and they do not wish to tear down camp and move. Calmly explain why camp should be moved. If you are bush camping, there will be other spots to set up camp. Moving is just an added insurance to safety. If you are located in a camp ground. Tell management. They will most likely approach the group that is loud and intoxicated or move you to another site further away. Just be polite. If you are camping and your group is the loud and intoxicated group and someone is close by. Reel your friends back in. Everyone I camp with is married with children. So everyone can settle their voice and attitude. But not seeing individuals for a year, spirits become high and the stories and booze begin to flow. Just remember your surroundings. Not just for your safety, but you want others around you to feel safe as well.

I have a less than lethal pistol. I was attacked from behind in New Orleans once. As he spun me around, I pulled my little 22 mag derringer that I had my hand on in my pocket. Had he knocked me to the ground, I would have gone for the Pocket 9 Detonics on my ankle. Fortunately, the big dude who attacked me backed off with his hands in the air when he saw the gun, so I didn't have to pull the trigger. Often just seeing a gun will cause the perp to have an attitude adjustment with no shots fired or anyone harmed.

Area alarms can be useful. Even the cheap battery-powered motion detector lights can do a lot to enhance your peace of mind and are not too heavy to pack in. Honestly, I would have called Security Forces immediately after the first interaction. Eglin is a place where lots of fun stuff is done. (I know....) Random folks just wandering about could be anything from junkies to spys to terrorists. When they didn't know about the pre-use brief is when they needed to have a talk with the motivated 19 year old with an M-4. And his/her friends... And "Fluffy" the fur-missile, who is the bestest of doggos... For what it is worth, I think you did well. Choose the engagement zone. Defuse any issue. Keep alert. Less lethal is better than nothing, but I have a deep distrust of the effectiveness of those systems. I have health issues, so I don't think going hand-to-hand would go well for me now. If you come to the San Antonio area, there are some nice MWR areas. Glad y'all were safe.

I carry while camping, and set up a trip wire perimeter around my camp at shin level . I purchased these shot shell perimeter alarms that make a loud bang (not shot, just the sound from the powder going off) There have only been a couple instances where I camped I a place that made setting up this perimeter difficult if not impossible, as I usually camp in the woods among trees and not right out in the open. If anything approaches my camp, I know about it and can ready myself for whatever threat may have wandered into my camp. I've only had mt perimeter go off twice, one was a deer, the other probably smaller animal that took off as I didn't see it. Animals though really aren't your concern, for the most part they will choose to stay away from you, the real monsters while camping are other people that might not have your best interest in mind

I guess in a similar situation I probably would just leave and not play shinobi. Depends on my party, though. @@RichYoung we don’t know what drug causes the issue when they were wrestling around in a small tent that was filled with drugs. They were there for two hours, and didn’t start having symptoms until about 30-to an hour later. The officers that came by the next morning let us know that they were both fine that morning.
@b.g.tercero23519 ай бұрын
@@DownSouth_Adventures The officers both had panic attacks. Tunnel vision, shortness of breath, whole body going numb, heart racing/pounding, cold sweat, inability to think clearly... and yet it's all in your head. If you've never had a panic attack, and particularly if you're unaware of the symptoms, you will absolutely KNOW you'll die unless you get help. If someone tells you "it's just a panic attack" you won't believe them, you KNOW something is very wrong. But you're wrong. Overwhelmingly powerful physical symptoms, but they arise from your thoughts getting out of control. The media has spread this myth about casual overdose on fentanyl. It's a modern superstition. It's most contagious among cops and paramedics because everyone likes a good story. I'm not being dismissive - it's a very real, very powerful phenomenon. The opposite of placebo effect, the nocebo effect. And then the panic attack itself is like a positive feedback loop... you feel like you're dying so you think you're dying so you panic which makes you feel like you're dying.... The cure is simply to correct your thoughts and breathing pattern. "This is a panic attack, I'm not dying." Breathe slow but deep like you're trying to inflate your stomach not your chest. Exhale forcefully and completely. 10 minutes later it's like waking up from a bad dream. PS great video, you handled everything perfectly.

I went primitive camping along the Rio Grande in Big Bend National Park a few years ago with my girlfriend. Our camp was about 75 yards from the river. About 2a.m., my girlfriend woke me up because she heard boot steps on the rocks outside our tent. I immediately sprang up, grabbed my Glock 19, a large flashlight and started searching. Didn't find anyone, but the area down by the river was heavily wooded with lots of drops, perfect for someone to hide. I eventually went back to the tent and we settled in again. After about 15 mins, we started hearing huge splashes in the river like someone was throwing big rocks into the water every minute. After about 15 minutes of this, I grabbed the pistol and flashlight and went down to the river once again. Didn't spot anyone. This time I yelled out in english and broken spanish that I would not hesitate to shoot anyone sneaking up on our camp. I went back to the camp and settled in once again. No more issues the rest of the night. The next morning, I looked into the Mexican side of the river and it looked like desert scrub for miles. Likewise, when we drove out, there were no signs of anyone camping within miles of our location so no idea who would have been prowling around our camp. I hate to think what may have happened if I was not armed.
