I'm Brazilian born and raised, but I cheer for Argentina since 2002, when I was 10 to 11 years old. I have a total of 3 jerseys (2010, 2014, 2022) and two pair of socks from 2014. Growing up in Brazil cheering for Argentina wasn't easy, specially after so many runners-up recently... but these last 3 years have been everything I asked for. Twenty years in the making, for the happiest ending ever. Proud to cheer for this amazing team that adopted me since I was just a kid. Of course, a lot has changed since 2002, the sport itself being softer than it ever was, but I still saw some of that effort in the last tournaments, especially in the 2022 world cup and that made really happy. Also, Brazilians are quite arrogant when it comes to football, thinking they can win everytime just because they have 5 championships and nobody else. That doesn't vibe with me at all.

Here is my interpretation as a non-Argentine: Argentina is the most emotional and passionate country in the world football-wise. The way they understand football is almost unique, and because of cultural affinities, only Uruguay and (to a lesser extent) Italy can somehow resemble that. Because of this, one of Argentina's key factors for success is attitude, the reason so many love them and the reason many others hate them, too. Regardless, it works for them. Maradona was like this and he's one of their two top idols. The other? Messi, who for long struggled with replicating his success at Barcelona with Argentina. In Spain, he was portrayed as the silent, innocent guy in contrast to the "arrogant" Cristiano (let's face it, CR7 is largely perceived as such). That could work for Barça, but not for Argentina. That's why they called him "pecho frío" for so long, and this pressure almost finished Messi. Remember the Copa América Centenario final loss, when he cried so much and announced his retirement from the team. In recent years, as Argentina was accumulating more failures and Barcelona entered a deep crisis, Messi became frustrated and began incurring in aggressivity that even resulted in him receiving a couple of red cards. Then, another important figure appeared: Emiliano Martínez. Something changed the moment Argentina took Colombia to the penalty shoot-out in 2021. See how Dibu and Messi targeted Yerry Mina. Dibu shouted "Look, imma eat you, bro" and stopped Mina's shot, while Messi shouted "Go on, dance now" at the Colombian. At the World Cup, we saw how heated the match against the Netherlands was. It’s true what you said about the passion we feel about this sport, and Messi and the rest of the team's attitude helped a lot, but the problem wasn’t the attitude before, it was the pressure. This is too important for us; all that passion becomes pressure when we can't win, and it's been growing for 36 years! I think Italy is going through something similar. That was a heavy burden for every player who wore our shirt since then. That’s why we lost so many finals; they couldn't cope with the pressure. They won the Copa America this time because this was a new team with young players who were playing with their idol, and were ready to do whatever it took to help him; they felt protected by him and that with him they could win anything. Winning the Copa America erased that baggage and that pressure; that Messi felt the most. In Argentina, they are loved no matter what after that, and that liberated them and gave them the strength they needed in the hard times of this world cup. This was the Argentine team that felt most free psychologically speaking in a long time. We've always had the talent, but the freedom and the uncompromised support they felt out and on the field, I think made the difference this time.

There are so many football-related curses in international stages other than the so-called "Champions Curse", like: 1.England: They didn't win again after 1966 because of third goal vs West Germany in that final. Later on, they even added penalties as their enemy because they failed to win a single knockout game through penalty shootout. 2.Mexico: After being disqualified for 1990 World Cup by fielding an overage players in the youth tournament, they didn't progress beyond the first knockout stage (fifth game). 3.Brazil: They failed to beat European teams in the knockout stage after 2002 win. 3.Japan: They failed to reach the quarterfinals in 4 occasions. Not to mention, a team that ended Japan's World Cup hope will finish third at the end of tournament (except Paraguay). 4.Netherlands: They reached 3 World Cup Finals, but always ended in defeat. 5.Scotland: They participated in 8 World Cups and 3 Euros, but are still yet to play in the knockouts. 6.Iran: Despite being ranked first in Asian football, their international performance was bad because many source said there were numerous violences against Islamic government. In World Cup, they are still yet to play in the knockout stages. The first World Cup for Iran was even happened a year before the big revolution for the country. 7.Korea Republic: Their last major silverware came in 1960, when they won the Asian Cup. Later on, they were cursed because players only received a fake gold medals. Even though the authorities give the real gold medals to all surviving members of 1960 winning team, they didn't win the Asian Cup again despite having a world class players like Park Ji-sung and Son Heung-min. Also, the Women's World Cup had its own curse where the hosts will always crashed out in the quarterfinals, with USWNT being notable exceptions because they actually won it in 1999 and finished third in 2003. Germany's defeat to Japan in 2011 was such a humiliation because they were also the defending champions and seeking for third win in a row at that time. Australia and New Zealand, the co-hosts of this year's WWC, might fell to this curse if they didn't get prepared well.

And ofc we had Dybala. His first-ever WC game debut was when Croatia beat Argentina 3-0, this time the universe changed its direction toward the Argentine's side. La Joya's first game this year WC was against Croatia, but now it was 3-0 for his country. And then he was one of the key player during PSO against France, he said he remembered Dibu's advice; aim the ball to the center... That's what Dibu yelled toward Enzo: "al medio, pelotudo!", All I can say is that, Enzo's failure that day led the way to La Joya's future success on the final game. It's been written. They are the champion of the world no matter how many accusations people threw to this NT.

My interpretation is that, whenever Argentina played, or rather Messi played he seemed lonely. He seemed like an outcast. I remember him taking the ball to the dbox but failing to find any player nearby to finish. But this new team felt different. It's almost as if everyone was supporting Messi. Alvarez, Acuna, Martinez, Otamendi, Enzo, and many others always surrounded Messi. So he can bounce off them or draw defenders and let them finish. This Argentina felt like a team. Messi felt like he belonged among them. The reason is pretty simple actually. Nearly all of them idolized Messi. From admiring to playing with him. Even Scaloni played with Messi at one point. So the reason why Argentina broke the curse is simple, this team was built around Messi.
