Agreed. While I love the 3MBG breakdowns, the occasional "fanboy" video is fantastic. We all have those games we obsess about and count down to the next time we can play. It's great seeing someone who plays games for a living still has that feeling.

You’re spot on about the PlayingBoardGames channel. Their AHLCG content is just fantastic. They have stuff for players of all levels of experience with the game, and their enthusiasm for the game just shines through. I defy anyone to watch one of their videos and then not really want to get the game out!

If you want to savor the experience, play in the release order. Don’t get overwhelmed with too many card choices before you’re ready to handle that much choice. There is an important learning curve with each campaign’s player cards that would be overload if you skipped. And later campaigns do get harder, or at least more intricate. There are lovely cards in Dunwich and Carcosa that get less play in a full collection, due to the slow, but inevitable power creep.

I’m in the obsession phase of this game as well. I’ve played night of the zealot a few times and am about to wrap my first play of dunwich. The deck construction is amazing. When I first opened the investigator box and saw no pre-built decks I was like oh no. But I watched some tip videos and the first time I played a deck I built I was blown away by seeing how well it worked and also where it faulted. This game is an obsession

I recommend Path to Carcosa, Innsmouth, or Edge of the Earth for a newer group or for those looking to get back into the swing of things! The story in those campaigns are incredible and their difficulties increase in different ways from each other, allowing you to really see how this game can truly unfold. Have fun!

My all time favourite game, please stream all the campaigns 😊 They play perfectly in order of release as each one adds more mechanics and layers to the game. Maybe skip dunwich if you've played it already and jump into Carcosa. It's definitely one of the best campaigns.

I've played all the official campaigns at least once and they're all enjoyable. I would probably recommend Carcosa first if you have a group with players new or returning after a long absence, just don't play it solo on your first experience with it. Scarlet Keys is my favorite campaign but also very different as it isn't linear like the previous ones, which can cause some difficulty spikes meaning players must be ok performing damage control when victory is near impossible. Return to Forgotten Age is a close second for me, but the difficulty of that one makes me not recommend it until later. I also like making weird combo focused decks. My favorites so far been 1) Preston Fairmont - Just use all your money to make others do the work for you. 2) Calvin Wright - Run around bloodied and near-insane, covered in bulletproof vests and protective trinkets. 3) Joe Diamond - Destroy your enemies to find the clues you need.

Man, I can completely relate to almost everything you said here. I played Night of the Zealot, and I loved it. Played the Forgotten age, and I loved it... but man it was hard to get a hold of a complete campaign for a price that didn't really hurt. The supply situation was somewhat better here in Australia, but as you said whenever one of the random packs isn't available it feels like a waste to buy the campaign. Because of all that I ended up quitting for a while, playing one or two standalone scenarios but nothing else. When they announced the new business model I was hugely excited and got back into the game, but I got back into the game so hard that I ended up buying everything before the model was even implemented. I've also struggled to keep organising Arkham games at home, but I'm lucky enough to live near a games store that runs regular Arkham lcg nights, so it hasn't kept me from playing. On campaign picks, I played them roughly in release order and found the gradual evolution of the scenario design to be very very interesting, early campaigns are full of simple but thematically and mechanically satisfying design choices, where later campaign introduce more complicated but highly rewarding mechanics. I personally think experiencing them out of order would nullify that a bit. Otherwise, whatever theme gets everyone more interested is the best choice.

I am jealous coz I want to go through all the campaigns again and experience the joy of discovery! Path to Carcosa has remained my favourite campaign for a reason I can't explain without spoiling the campaign. Forgotten Age is REALLY hard but soooo enjoyable, I liked the choices of Circle Undone, I love the setting and the adventures of Dream eaters, Innsmouth conspiracy was a classic before it was even out, haven't played edge of the Earth or Scarlet Keys yet but can't wait (I heard you should play edge of the earth with a full team bc ofcthe size of the maps). This game is my favourite boardgame of all time and is definitely my most played game in my collection. You're in for a treat!!

I recently decided to rank my favorite tabletop games as I approach my five years in the hobby. "Arkham Horror: The Card" game made it into my top 10 so I very much relate to the love coming from this video! Like you, I love the deck-building component and the powerful narrative element of the game. I generally don't care that much for co-ops (they often feel too much like videos games, with a lifeless A.I. randomly throwing a problem your way); the deckbuilding component mitigates that problem for me - I never feel like I have no agency. Unlike a lot of other narrative games, much of the narrative is expressed *through* the gameplay (not just through the narrative descriptions between scenarios - although those often work very well, too). Starting with "Path to Carcosa," I also feel like the designers became more ambitious with the type of narratives they wanted to tell. I would strongly recommend beginning your next campaign there! - Also, playingboardgames is a great channel!

This has sat at the top of my favorite games of all time for so long. Since maybe the second cycle or a bit after then? The deck building also being character backstory/development at the same time as it's the usual crunchy optimization or playfulness is so undeniably brilliant. And the core system is so ridiculously flexible, this is a game that could live forever because of the depths of unique gameplay seems endless. Carcosa is great, but so is Innsmouth!

I’m right there with you, J! I have everything for this game even though I’ve barely scratched the surface. I’ve played through NotZ, Dunwich, and Carcosa, and am currently running three campaigns - EotE with my 4P gamer group, the Forgotten Age 2P with another AH fanatic, and just started NotZ with my 11yo daughter. I’d definitely go for Carcosa next if I were you, unless the other two players are brand new. Carcosa mechanically isn’t any harder than Dunwich, but the story is top notch, with zero “flawed” scenarios in my opinion. The other ones all have at least one meh scenario, where Carcosa just smashes it each and every outing.

Long ago AH2e was my favourite and sat stubbornly. Eventually I gave AHLCG a shot, and learning how well the designers used the source material, I couldn't help but fall in love with it. The staying power really is with the deck building. I have most cards in my head and love building decks. I had to make a second arkhamdb account, because I hit Max count, and even my second account has 150+ decks. I just love making Johnny type decks, and making interesting combinations. I feel I've built enough to a point that I can test the deck at the building level as a separate process before playing it in arkham proper. There's a fun analysis process that can be gained, and it comes from experience of going through many types of decks and improvement in deckbuilding. It's great to find your own niche in what you like. Btw Ah2e is still my 2nd favourite game of all time, if that gives me any credibility, and I've watched all your videos on that subject. As for campaign suggestions, I can't recommend the next in line Carcosa enough, namely due to level of complexity they introduce. If you've really enjoyed it as you seem, you'll end up playing it all. I'm always happy to chat with your blind experiences to a campaign, loved that feeling. I think from comments you are leaning towards Minh, but Patrice is such a weird character, I imagine to would enjoy her too.

We tried Arkham Horror the card game some time back, and unfortunately didn't latch onto it... something about the monsters being predictable in their movement pattern (unlike e.g. KDM with hit reactions) made the game feel a bit dead to us. Johnny's of the world unite! Some of my favourite MTG tournaments were the ones where I brought rogue decks to very serious tournaments. Arkham is an incredible LCG and Core -> Dunwich legacy -> Path to Carcosa is such a fantastic arc. So yeah, I vote Path to Carcosa! It is such a well timed campaign if you've done Core and Dunwich a bunch. I loooooved how they played with the entire format and expectations and it remains one of my favourite arkham experiences. Agree - I own Dunwich, Carcosa, and the standalone investigators. And all I've done is play Night of the Zealot and Dunwich - solo. I too watch Playing board games. I too was eager to get a campaign to table (though that didn't go so well at 4 players, as there was a bit too much downtime, and the luck on the 2nd scenario was one of those "worst possible" and not in a fun way).... So I think I'll continue solo'ing, and want to buy more every time I log in to an online store... but feel the need to stop and wait until I've at least played Carcosa and "caught up". And there you go, I answered your Ramble with my own Ramble. And you should play... Carcosa I think! It's next up, the story is supposed to be great, and it's one of the most highly rated (including rates from Playing board games). Even though I haven't played it, there you go. That's my recommendation!

My recommendation of the next campaign would be Path to Carcosa. Excellent campaign based off the novel The King in Yellow. It's a mechanically simple campaign so it's fairly new player friendly without being mechanically boring either, and the story is ominous and mind bending, leaving the players questioning what is real and is not within the narrative. It's considered to be one of the best campaigns in the series and for good reason!

arkham LCG is also a favorite of mine although I haven't played since the scarlet keys. For me it is mostly making the decks that stops me as this really determines if you are going to have a good time or getting your ass kicked like you're a toddles fighting a wrestling champion. On what to play. Dunwhich, as you know, is a very standard campaign and a good introduction. However considering you played it several times innsmouth is also a good option for a more standard like campaign. It is also a very good campaign. Carcosa is a classic, cannot go wrong with that. Edge of the earth is also great, and they really played with the fact that the campaign was delivered in one. Scarlet keys has a fun idea that doesn't work that well. It is more a choose your own adventure story which can lead to a lot of reading and going in circles. Still, has fun scenario's. the twilight lodge and dreamers are ranking wise more on the bottom for me, but they are still a good time. But considering you have a month I advice carcosa and edge of the earth. Because damn those were fun. And for a stand alone, murder at the excelsior hotel. And for a silly stand alone, barkham horror.

This was a fantastic video. A brilliant take from someone that isn't deep into the game yet content wise but has the enphusiasm for the game. It is my second favourite game behind Spirit Island. The reason I love AH: LCG so much is because it is the game I think about most when not gaming. I may be watching some TV passively thinking about what decks to create, what investigators to pair together. I'm sure deckbuilding for the game on ArkhamDB has tens of hours put into it. Great shout out to Playing board games as well who are my go to for content on the game. Team Covenant got me into the game during the pandemic as one of them learned the game live stream. I'd recommend playing the campaigns in chronological order. It doesnt really matter but I liked playing that way and it often means you slowly ramp up into more rules being added. the latter campaigns often adding extra little rules here and there. Recommended investigator for you: Stella Clark. A survivor. The games first trans character. A completely different playstyle of failing skill tests but gaining benefits nonetheless. If you have all the player cards there are loads of failure survivor cards that reach new heights in Stella.

I watched some of Eric playing Stella on PBG, very strong. It's looking like i'm gonna be the clue monkey in our trio, and i'm leaning towards Minh as a result.

@@3MBG I really like playing as Minh. Plenty of skills cards in her deck is normally how I go. Scavenging plus Ice picks can be really good in her as well. Hope the campaigning goes well. Would love to hear how it goes if you decided you wanted more content a brief talk through of each scenario and how it went and overall thoughts if the campaign would do very well in the Arkham community I think

Thinking Flashlight 3 and old key rings, and seeing how much i can mess about with lowering shroud. That seems a little different than the traditional magnifying glass ;)

@@3MBG I love that style of gameplay. Used both Darrell and Stella. Old key ring 3, gumption, flashlight 3, winging it and shed a light are super powerful. As is quick learner which plays perfectly in Stella. Just be warned using that tactic in Minh. She cant access keyring 3 which gets you clue compression. Can't use quick learner for lower shroud. Flashlight 3 is amazing as it isnt an action so you can use it with the action on keyring for -4 shroud. But Minh's weakness is a hand item. So if you have an old keyring and a flashlight her weakness forces you to discard one. So Minh is particularly bad at using both hand slots. Which reduces the flexibilty of flashlight 3 comboing the old keyring. Arcane enlightenment could give you that 3rd hand slot if you were worried about her weakness. But I am sure she still works that way. Just some thoughts on being careful of that weakness hurting you. Its the brilliant thing about the game that we can make these wild deck ideas.

I'm a massive Arkham LCG fan, played every campaign at least 3 times each and I have to say, as for which one you play next, Path to Carcosa is the absolute best. Amazing use of the basic mechanics without too much new stuff to overwhelm players. My opinions on the campaigns though: Dunwich: Good but doesn't hold up terribly well against later campaigns. They were finding their stride with this one Path to Carcosa: Generally considered the best campaign to date Forgotten Age: The hardest and most brutal by far The Circle Undone: Good but not quite as well executed as PtC Dream Eaters: Annoying to manage multiple decks across the 2 campaigns but a very good campaign Edge of the Earth: Personally one of my favourites but I agree it is let down a little by a slightly lackluster second half. Lots of reading though which means playing with a group is annoying Scarlet Keys: LOTS OF READING. As in, more time spent reading than actually playing the game. Playing without the Arkham Cards app makes this campaign a nightmare of book keeping. The scenarios are solid enough and the key cards are fun but yeah, lots and lots of reading.

This is my top 1 board game and is the only close thing I can get to d&d. You know why? Because the stories are amazing. When creating a character you have so many options and fun creating. The horror, survival theme also unique. Actions matter and you can lose easily. The episodes last long. Some people say... Why to spend so much money in lcgs games. First of all no one forces you. Second of all the value, hours and replayability scales insanely. Some campaigns add 4-12hours + the hours creating new characters. I mean how many board games can reach 200+ hours of playing them and give you all the time new things? Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Carcosa is still the best. Forgotten Age is very hard (the return to cards are highly recommended) but interesting. Scarlet Keys is good but introduces some new complex rules to keep track of. Edge of the Earth will take the biggest table you have, it is huge.

The table i did a large chunk of this video in front of is 180cm by 120cm, it fits most things. It also has a lid so so you can play on top and get the whole size of it. Fits 6 player Star Trek Ascendancy and Twilight Imperium at 6

i played this game in tts like most half of the campaigns and i would say that scarlet keys are the best of them all and that is what this game should be about in first place all others are just for one shot (near 0 replay ability) so there is only two options to play it: either from first to the last, or just that last one...cause after the last it will be kind of boring to play others...

Love the game, but don’t have the energy to play often. Ive only ever finished dunwich and carcosa. But i own all the reboxed stuff, a bunch of standalones and the return to’s except zealot (which i got rid of years ago when i got rid of my original collection. Oops). I tried playing with some friends and oddly found i’d rather just play solo one or two handed. I’m not sure why. I enjoy figuring out the puzzle myself, I suppose!

I agree playing all of them in order is a good way to do it. Maybe because Path to Carcosa is my favorite, and Scarlet Keys is dead last in my rankings haha. I think SK HAS to be the last regardless, because it is by far the most overly complicated. You need at least a few campaigns under your belt before tackling that. Shout out to Forgotten Age as my pick as the best story (and biggest "grower") and Dream-Eaters as the most atmospheric.

How much replayability do you find in a campaign? Is it still interesting after 3-4 plays?
@3MBG
@3MBG 11 ай бұрын
I've played Dunwich through about 6 times now. The first play is different for sure because there is the shock and surprise factor. And you never really get that sort of experience the 2nd time through. But here's the thing, AH-LCG is trope based story telling, the stories are fun but they aren't murder mysteries where once you go through them the surprise is ruined. They hold together the scenarios, and the core of the game is really making a character and trying them against a series of different challenging scenarios in a row. It does become more of a board game and less of an RPG on replays. Because you are focusing more on the challenges you know are coming up and building your decks to deal with them. But considering I'm 1/4 in terms of winning finales on my blind playthrough, this gives me something to shoot for on the replay.

This is a bit tangential and I don't mean to make you repeat yourself but you'd mentioned somewhere tha Elder Sign didn't have a resource that Arkham Horror had that increased decision possibilities. Sort of like an alternative currency. Which vid was that / what was the currency? Also does the card game have a similar flexibility? Or is it a different sort of experience that way?
@3MBG
@3MBG Жыл бұрын
It was about Eldritch horror, not Elder sign. And it was my recent "10 rules that make good games great". It was about how in AH2, clues are a resources that can be spent. Whereas in Eldritch horror, they are too valuable to spend for that. And for me, that turned the game from a risk managment game to one where you roll dice and have little control over the outcome.

I've not played since the pandemic since I played with a friend's cards & I don't like it much solo (2 handed would be OK but its a bit of a chore, especially not owning any cards :) ). However I'm playing again tomorrow if I can overcome my AP at the ridiculous number of cards there are out now. Yay! I think the campaigns for LotR and MC are garbage but AH soars and has legitimate branching paths and failing forwards. My only issue is that it's hard to test decks and you can commit to a campaign with a ropey pile.
