The pressure is on every side of the object and glass is solid. It has nowhere to go, that's why it stays intact. The pressure can't crush objects of steel or aluminium either if they haven't any air pockets in them.

There is a picture of a shelf where a waiter had put almost a hundred plates and bowls and spoons and such, but it is not even disturbed an inch. Just dirt upon them. Some of those memories still preserved strongly. Unfortunately the ship as a whole is slowly being lost to history.

There is a big difference between being a grave robber and being a historian working for a museum. A grave robber would go down to the ship, take the artifacts, and then sell them for their own personal gain. These people who are preserving the clothing and other items found at the site of the ship​ are gathering the items so they do not disappear forever and take very good care of them to ensure they are not destroyed. The historians are not doing it for selfish purposes but a grave robber only cares about the money and fame they could gain from getting these items.

I don't know about personal items and artifacts, but there was one survivor who specifically said she didn't want the titanic to be brought to the surface, as she considered it her fathers grave. Personally, I think good quality video footage is enough. We are never going to be able to touch any of these artifacts anyway and the video footage will last forever.

So why not salvage what we can and retrieve these items that belonged to these people and create an area dedicated in their memory with their items on display, preserved and protected. @@Firearcher4 I remember watching a documentary where one of the last survivors whose father perished when Titanic sank was horrified at the thought that people might go in there, poke around and pry as her father lied on that wreck along with others who perished that night. I think it's very different from a person that died in a room as it's not just a place where the tragedy took place but also their final resting place. Only 900+ out of the 2200+ on board the vessel were buried on land including the survivors. Many of the bodies recovered were buried in the sea. So it is indeed a gravesite for the 1300+ who perished. Not to mention many of their descendants have also voiced concerns about intrusive activities around the wreck. Hence, I think it is very disrespectful to conduct any intrusive activity without the blessings from the 2240 passengers and crew and their families and relatives.

I used to have reservations about artefacts and parts of the ship being raised for documentation, studying, preservation and display. Yes, the area is, for some, spiritually a graveyard. We know people died in the ship, drowned on the surface, sank and dotted the space around the wreck like confetti. We know this because of the pairs of shoes and treated clothes and leatherware their bodies left behind, long after their flesh was consumed by other organisms and/or decomposed, and their bones inevitably dissolved by minerals and other bacteria. The body is gone, and has been for a long time. Could you take an artefact from within the vicinity of the ‘grave’ of one of these victims? My opinion would be yes. An artefact touching the clothing remains of a victim? Personally I don’t know, but I think I’m subtly leaning toward yes. To put this in context, think of the 9/11 Museum in New York. They have on display, tastefully and respectfully, the remnant remains of personal artefacts that belonged to people whose lives ended in some of the most horrible of ways. Items that were in their pockets, items they used, items they wore as they burned or shattered to pieces via impact. Am I saying we should plunder the ship of all its archaeology and leave but shoes and clothes on the ocean floor? No. Be respectful, be considerate, but also think to the future. Events like these are rare, and these historic items are degrading faster than ever. Ultimately we aren’t raising these artefacts just for us, but for the countless generations ahead in the centuries to come.

I have an enormous problem with them taking clothes, especially the pairs of shoes which quite literally were on peoples feet when they died and drifted to the bottom. You might as well did up 1,500 bodies, open their caskets, take out their shoes, and sell them. It's disgusting. It's one think to take plates and books, it's another thing to literally take the clothes off the backs of bodies.

Books are important to remember the person like journals and manifestos just like ships sunk in the 16 to 1700's and many who had love ones on the ship are long dead by now.

Im sorry, but they needed to leave that stuff there. When Ballard found the wreck in 85, he PROMISED they weren't going to take anything. Within three years, they had people sniffing stuff out , particularly coins and safes, so don't give me " they're conservators" . The people running the expedition were the grave robbers.

At the time yes and what they did was wrong but now in 2021 the grave is decaying and with how a lot of people are forgetting historical moments like this it is a sacrifice a lot are willing to do in keeping the memory of its survives and victims alive yes not all excivaters who found the artifacts are good some where sold to private collectors but some have added to exhibits where the will last forever or longer then in under the sea.
