Great video . Thanks. I am greek born in small town but grew up in Sydney Australia. When I came to Greece for a holiday at the age of 19 and went to Athens for the first time exlporing its neighbourhoods I fell in love . I came back after two years to live here . Stayed for 5 years , went back to Sydney and after three years there I got miserable thinking of my life in Athens and came back for good. Athens is so alive it made my senses explode! Now at 54 I am back at my little town by the beach one hour by train from Athens and although I enjoy the nature and serenity here , I always hop on the train on Saturday nights to visit my favourite city and feel its vibes till the morning when I hop on the first train back to my town, sleep , and wake up in a little quite paradise so close to a hectic but real city ❤.

I sold a beautiful home in Massachusetts and bought a tiny apartment in Athens for (God willing) my retirement years. I like listening to Church bells, fresh bread from bakeries, having coffee with my neighbors, laïki everyday except Sunday. It doesn't have a secular, sterile feel that the US has. love Athens ❤

I kept coming back every single year, meeting with my old friends who, over the years, became my true family. I am retired now and this is the city I call home. Another great episode! Love the recognition value of the intro! It was so interesting to learn about the history of Athens and also get some parallels with NYC. I remember the housing crash of 2008 and its consequences for Europe, the European debt crisis and the speculation about the breakup of the eurozone. It‘s consequences still being felt today.

What an incredibly insightful video. I go to Athens every year as my partner is Greek (moved to the UK from Athens), and we go to see his family. I’ve grown to love Athens so much over the years. It’s definitely a chaotic city, that very few people would say is beautiful in a ‘traditional’ sense. But my god it has character, and to me that creates its own form of ‘beauty’. I’ve always wondered why Omonoia had such a bad reputation for being so dangerous, even more weirdly in such a prime city centre location. My Greek partner always said it’s the no-go area of Athens. But this explains it perfectly 😀

This is a great video! Really talks perfectly about the situation in Athens. What I disagree with is how the protest are presented. The events from 2008 to 2013 very big and they were very briefly discussed. It is understandable because the video would end up being way longer. But I still recommend to anyone interested in learning more about Greece and 21st century to research more about the 2008 - 2013 events. Also for more recent events research the Tempi train tragedy and zackie. Overall great video! Love seeing Athens and Greece presented to the worldwide scene! Love from Athens !❤

I'm Athenian, and I live quite close to the city center, which means that I've walked around Omonoia quite a bit and not just during the day. Thus, I can tell you that they're being overdramatic. Omonoia is a hub. There are a lot of people going there for business, shopping or to go to another place. This means that there is an unusually high number of cops around. There are other way more dangerous places that even I avoid during the night, but tourists don't go there and they don't have any reason to.

After watching your video I feel the need to say a few things: 1) During the years of recession we did had some riots and protests but not daily as presented by several people . Many things were over exaggerated by journalists . 2) Athens is not just the city centre and Glyfada ( the two extremes). There are very “normal” municipalities where the majority of Athenians live . 3) Graffiti in Athens is indeed everywhere but that doesn’t mean that the areas are dangerous. Athens remains a very safe city despite how it looks comparing to other western cities . Greece doesn’t have the type of criminality you can find in places like US so safety or better lack of safety doesn’t mean the same thing with other cities . 3) Freedom of expression doesn’t give you the right to destroy public areas ( vandalism) 4) Athens biggest problems are : unregulated parking , small or nonexistent pavements and lack of law enforcement. Democracy has rules and laws too. Love your videos Ariel

people often romanticize situations they dont live in or dont live in - anymore -. I too despise Greece's lack of organization, planning, but I can see the form of pleasure somebody gets when somebody contemplates the reasoning behind, and slowly gets to understand that this chaos is a living organism, and that behind this chaos there's actual order. I think there is an appeal on romanticizing this chaos, and also have a dislike for the disregard of organization. I can understand why foreign scientists get a liking by understanding it.

Athens didn't survive near collapse. Not yet. They're still in the middle of it. The economy all over Greece is in the toilet and swirling down fast. And it's not just Greece, the whole worlds developed countries are suffering from global economic collapse. It's already worse than the Great Depression, but they refuse to admit we are in a depression or that we'd been in a recession for the past 20 years before now.

@@Grazingoat That isn't benefiting them. Needing to print more money is a sign the problem is even worse. The more money you print, the less value it has and the less you can buy with it. Soon enough they'll be spending thousands of dollars on a loaf of bread. That doesn't benefit anyone. Every country that had to resort to printing more money to float their economy, ended up in a far worse situation. Housing prices on the rise, is a large part of the problem because now people who can't afford to buy what they used to buy, also can't afford to buy those houses or rent apartments and they end up homeless.

This Spanish guy was so much on point. Athens is indeed in danger of losing identity, and in contrast with your last words at the video, it is not really anymore on the hands of Athenians to chose their future, but more in the hands of a few elites and big foreign investors. Not to take away responsibility from Athenians that sell out their heritage and purposely undervalued their roots, but gentrification might be the thing to finish originality more than any financial crisis. Just take a look at the rapid change that happens in Exarchia, not only about the rents going up, but also the people that inhabit the neighborhood nowadays, and the activity that this brings. Things change, but not for the best, it's gonna be a great place for tourists for the next few years, until over-touristification will take away even the last drop of originality and the city center will be something like Venice or Amsterdam.

Sorry but this idea that people only hustle and are money driven in places like New York and London and not Athens is simply not true. Money and personal success drives people everywhere, and pretty much any place will have people who are making huge sacrifices and working hard to make something of themselves, including Athens. Just because the “relaxed” people are more visible to you as a tourist doesn’t mean the other side doesn’t exist as well.

The rise of prosperity? 11% unemployment? It is close to 20 %..Greece has still the 2nd place in unemployment in europe. Money is getting spent in the middle of the month. Rends are half the income. Everything is getting privatized. Next is the water. Gentrification pushed rents and is to the benefit of those that are in the tourist industry. Greece is like cuba before the revolution. And these artists in the establishment played their role as athens fine art school is sipped with capitalist and neoliberal professors and their faux radicalism. Greece is dying and especially athens. There is no growth. There are no homes for people to stay. Not built anymore. A worker gets paid 900 at best and 500 or 450 are spent to the shithole he she it will stay. Plus edpensive bills and you get there. The center of athens is a no no for indigenous people and the gettos are getting gentrified every day After the crisis privatization and the neoliberal state of capitalism was imported more here along with fragmentation in politics (the industry of identity politics). Neo fascism and fear reign in politics now. As if the imperium imposed it all and it did. Both in the economy and in politics. Restrictions are eased after covid. Economic i mean but this is temporary because of geopolitical tensions. In sum this is a part of the imperium of capitalist europe and the western world were u will have a good vacation with people serving you in the hot sand working 24/7 and 15 hours a day for your accomodation. To get just 5000 euros a summer and get broke the next spring (those that work in tourism like tourists slaves, u can check rodos for more info). The situation here is shit. Only the weather is good and we are not as alienated as in western countries but they are working on that and importing it.

Either you like it or not Athens is a very interesting and lively city. On the other hand is the hardest, wildest and most brutal to live in at least in Europe. And If you consider the median MONTHLY income of a greek is 700€ then you can think that it is not worth the effort to live here.

so sad as a Greek American to see Omonia Square like this. when i first visited the square 45 yrs ago it was safe and a hip place to go but now it like trying to build it up like they are trying to build up Newark but they did accomplish building up Hoboken and part of Jersey City but Omonia i really don think so just like Newark and also the shore town of Keansburg near me again they did accomplish part of Asbury and Long Branch but go down a few block and you have the slums again. just so sad on all parts

Interesting comparison that makes you wonder if that will also be Omonoias destiny. But let me please give you a nicely meant advice: Try to use commas and make the sentences shorter. I had to read your comment three times until I completely understood although I`m used to reading way more complicated stuff.

The ugglines of the city with for exampel all the grafity, is reflecting the frustration of the people that lives in the concrete anomaly. Any animal that dosen not live in its biological enviroment will react with frustration, anxiety ect. The grafity is also a statment by the anarchist left with there urban guerilla groups, that burned Athens a coupel of times, in there quest to abolish the state and create an anarchy society

Greece has over 1.000.000 public servants moving tons of paper from one desk to the next. I hope next time banks stay closed for a couple of years, as a remedy. If Airbnb is too much for some, in my view 1.000.000 public pensil pushers are too much.

First of all, Greece is not the country's name. It is insulting to call it like that. Secondly, Athens should be a big open air museum with entrance fee and no citizens. Like every other city in the country, Athens is an abnormity.

Very sorry to let you know but Athens is among the ugliest cities in Europe. The suburbs you are promoting where I live too are so expensive, no Greek can afford 5k euros per square meter when their salary is 1k or even lower. The centre is so dirty and cramped. I believe if aliens "abducted" the Parthenon, the city is rather similar to a poor middle Eastern city, now that temperatures soar at 50 degrees in the summer even more similar
