Audi has finalised its deal to buy into Sauber and make the Swiss team its works Formula 1 entry in 2026.
Less than two months after we learned Audi was definitely going to build an engine for the new rules, we now know for sure which team will be running that engine.
There’s plenty to ponder as the first-ever Audi F1 project takes shape, and we’re here to explain how it will work, what key questions still need to be answered - and what the latest is with Volkswagen Group sister brand Porsche as the Audi programme gathers pace.

Don't know about everyone else, but I know I'm not the only one who calls the team Sauber unless I really think about it. I've heard commentators switch between the Alfa Romeo and Sauber names since the hook up. That team will always be Sauber first and foremost, and even if it's not everyone's "first choice" team, any time they do well, I'm pretty sure we're all really happy! Almost as emotional as when Minardi got a point lol. Not kidding, I could end up in tears 😂. When Vettel won in the Toro Rosso car, not long (in F1 terms) after it had been bought out from Minardi, and still had mostly Minardi mechanics working there, I was sobbing my heart out with joy!

A Porsche-Andretti 11th entry would be nice to have, considering they're already partnered in Formula E, it would make for good branding for that to carry over into F1 too, also with the budget cap, there's a lot of staff that have been made redundant from other teams, so bringing experienced F1 engineers and personal on-board will be achievable, the only real massive expense would be building new facilities or renovation and upgrading of the abandoned Manor facilities

As for a being a feeder team for graduating junior drivers, it seems the trend for teams' young drivers program seems to be in the pits lately. Dolton Capital owners of Williams have valued the team at £1Billion which is well in excess of the cost to build a team from scratch. That is only part of the equation. Their valuation is due to the fact that there are essentially 10 grid slots that teams and the FIA all have to agree to increasing it. That makes it incredibly difficult to expand due to it being in the teams interest to prevent new entries meaning to only way onto the grid is to by an existing team. Porsche-Hass or Porsche-Andretti are the 2 most likely. Alpha Tauri are too useful to RBR to let that become a Porsche team.

How about a video on George Russell's history of driving into others & then saying he was left with no space & receiving no penalty points by the FIA? Not to mention the sound of crickets by Sky F1 at such incidents, because of their heavy British & Mercedes bias. When it happened to Max last season, he was labelled "aggressive", "dangerous" & a "lunatic."

It will be interesting to see who Audi takes on as a customer team, to help with 1) development testing and 2) a substantial financial contribution. F1 seems to want either five manufacturers and ten teams, or six manufacturers and twelve teams. Andretti still has no partner unless it's as 2nd fiddle to Audi or Porsche.

Honestly, I hope Audi or Porsche use a team as a springboard to start their own F1 team. We need more cars/drivers on the grid, and this would be a great way to do that. If Audi or Porsche aren't willing to start a team from scratch, it's clearly too difficult to be worth it for anybody else, so a sister team startup with as many shares parts as possible is the best option.

Two VW group entries doesn't make sense. It's not like the RedBull/Alfa Tauri relationship, with one being the junior team (effectively). This is two directly competing teams from the same organisation.

Porsche Needs to just enter F1 as FULL Works team/ aka. + 2 cars on the grid.... And the FIA et al needs to allow this..... The more Manufacturers the better. PS. Still don understand how 'Ford' hasn't just teammed up with andretti to enter also?

All current teams oppose to broadening the grid into 11 teams because this fact deteriorates the value of the currently held position on the grid. If the only way to get into F1 is buying out existing team then the value of that team is being inflated and it can demand better terms

Porsche - Andretti partnership would be the option that I'm certain most of us would want to see. The sport is growing and expanding to an 11th team would actually generate buzz. Porsche buying an ownership state in Haas or Williams and slapping their logo on the side of the car would excite absolutely no one.

I think they are looking to remain independent, the days of relying on another team for engines is over like when they were running Renault and Ferrari engines, especially if VW will be fielding another team under the Audi brand with it's own interests.

here's a tip for the editor: NEVER scroll text this fast in a video made at 25fps. it's jarring and unreadable for as long as it is moving. so either scroll a lot slower, or do a more aggressive sinusoidal easy in/out so it's faster in the transition but eases in faster to a readable speed in less time.
