Guys, Ayton is definitely not a star and his contract is inflated. But you don't watch Portland games, and your assessment of his performance is still far from reality. Nowadays it's an automatic double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, but sometimes he produces a bad game. You literally only remember the moments when he plays poorly, and yes, he can play terrible, but the hype around him is unjustified because he plays... just like a good NBA player, which is not enough for a max contract, but also not enough for him to hated. I'm pretty weak in English, so I could write something stupidly

He's been one of the best most consistent blazer players this season. Sure it's on a losing team with no expectations of winning this year. I think everybody needs to relax. He’s a highly efficient double double machine and protects the rim very well. We saw him be incredible in a role where he’s a 3rd/4th option in Phoenix, he’s been under the spotlight too much in Portland. He simply isn’t a #1 option.

@barleymepodcast23019 ай бұрын
He’s always been petulant. He needs to feel involved in order to produce. In Phoenix, he would beast for 3 quarters then not see the ball at all in the 4th for YEARS. Even when he was putting up absurd #s in their Finals run. When you’re shooting 80%, grabbing boards, and shutting down your man, then not seeing the ball in crunch time, that’s gonna feel like a slap in the face. On the Portland side, his need to be set up in order to finish well is the issue. And since he’s not producing, his touches are down, and boom! now the effort is gone again. If any NBA team could figure that out and actually get players to put him in spots like the Suns did AND continue to go to him as the game goes on, I think we can see him blossom into the player he was supposed to be. But it better happen soon or it never will.

Deandre Ayton is definitely better than a NBA draft bust. To his credit, he's still better than the average NBA player. Also, he's proven to be (or at least he used to) a valuable starter on a NBA Finals contending team. Ayton was overhyped (Arizona star playing for the Suns is good marketing), which led him to being overpaid (4 years/$132 million), and now he is overrated (never reached All-Star status). And the criticism of his low work ethic is totally fair. But he can still produce good statistics in games (20-25 points and 10-15 rebounds), and still finishes with annual season stats with a double double. That being said, when you're the #1 pick of your draft, and there are 8 guys drafted after you who are better (Luka Dončić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Brunson, Trae Young, and Jaren Jackson Jr., Mikal Bridges, Michael Porter Jr. and Anfernee Simons), people are gonna criticize your career.
