@@gustaf3811 Democracy is an experiment, an ongoing project. It requires constant participation from the citizenry to work. The reason why democracy fails is because the public doesn’t participate fully in it, involuntarily via things like voter suppression laws but also voluntary due to such attitudes like “I don’t talk about politics.” Most citizens limit their engagement with politics to voting only in presidential elections. Democracy requires more involvement than just voting for a president to work, indeed for democracy to work the citizenry must engage in more civics than just voting. When the public is limited in its political engagement it allows public servants to develop into their own class of elites which is exactly what democracy is suppose to prevent. For democracy to work, everyone must be political, there cannot be a few people whose job it is to be political and everyone else disengages with political business. I’m other words, democracy fails when there exist a political class.

"The more governments control what their fellow citizens know the less they can claim the authority of those citizens for how they rule. The more governments withhold information from their fellow citizens the less accountable they are to those who give them their authority." John Dunn "Democracy". The biggest paradox of democracy is that while insists that government exercise democracy on behalf of its citizens but as matter of fact it is in hands of very few of those citizens, many of whom become career politicians. In terms of both political and economic power, the mass democracy of Periclean Athens has given way (by necessity) to an accommodation with what Dunn refers to as the "order of egoism," sustained by an economic system that encourages the accumulation of wealth and power in the hands of a tiny percentage of the population. The challenge for governments that wish to be seen as democratic is to preserve their ability to claim that they rule by the consent of the governed. In an age in which the ability of governments to intervene in the lives of their citizens is more powerful than ever, this is a matter of no small importance.

regardless of what kind of governing system there is, there is always a hierarchy. none of the communist regimes actually practice equality contrary to those who romanticise it. though the monarchy was abolished in france, the republican soon showed no difference. when people have power, they become greedy. this is very human. the failure to understand shows a sort of naivety. if you can see this abuse on the workplace level, do not expect a government body to do better. protesting violently won't change history. the same people who revolt may end up ruling but they won't make the place better once they are in power. there are always going to be people who are going to be left behind. and as a minority, a majority race privilege is very real.

This is exactly why the government must begin to listen 100% to the people. The representative democracy must be removed, long live direct democracy! Power to the people!

Democracy is an idiotic idea. Representative democracy puts a necessary check between idiots and action, but the problem is that the representatives are idiots as well. Regardless, it's still better to have that check between voting and action. People provably are too stupid to make decisions for each other.

@@chaospilot2142 Markets and and do govern. This is provable from recent events. Have you not seen the massive over reactions of companies like Starbucks to this victim culture shit? Have you not seen the get woke, go broke campaign? Two examples of market governance. Also, "they" don't always form a government. Generally, people get subjugated, they don't consent initially. Someone conquers them, and then government becomes a given. This won't be the case moving forward because as humans and markets evolve, we are gaining better understanding of what's economically beneficial, and it isn't war. I'm not saying it's a magic trick, I'm saying that it's superior to democracy and that it is finally becoming a realistic evolution. Remember that democracy wasn't our default system of governance, either. Now humanity holds it as the pillar of governance. As for me? I'd much rather contract with my security company and my disability insurance than pay taxes I haven't agreed to pay to people who use the money for things with provably bad outcomes.

A related question: how many countries today enjoy democracy that was given to them by another nation? As in : they did not need to fight for it, there came in a third party such as US, UK, France, Russia, EU or whoever - and they ended up free?

Economist in full survival mode. Pivoting desperately to land on the right side. Economist speaking about erosion of Democracy and dominance of elites is like Eichmann speaking about the horror of camps. Complicit to the hilt, they have the nerve to shed croc tears.

Was it really necessary tu blur the opioid injection? I feel like this is a benign image compared to other scenes of this otherwise very interesting documentary. I wonder if it was blurred so people won’t “learn” how to inject themselves drugs!? I would find it helpful if the Economist could respond on this matter. Thank you

Hi Victor, thanks for your feedback. KZbin's community guidelines prohibit us from showing content that depicts people abusing controlled substances so we had no choice but to blur the footage in that scene.

Leaders have always been same. It's people who have more information about their govt and leaders. This brings dissatisfaction!
