Bamboo is the only plant that survived the Hurricane that destroyed every other tree on the Island of Kauai. I hope this happens I Love Bamboo. I once lived in a Bamboo forest on Oahu and just fell in love with it

I would be interested in knowing David Sands thoughts on the 5 most promising bamboo varieties to plant...and what variety was shown in the image @6:00. Great interview by the way.Mahalo Richard. Aloha from Kaʻū

Great discussion and interview! So many questions about their work was answered here! I am curious about how they approach insulation and thermal bridging? Their hybrid series seem to be insulated by installing stick framed wall panels between the bamboo framing. It’s unclear if this still runs into the typical issues of using pine lumber in tropical environments (quickly degrading/termite and moisture vulnerability)? Is there any insight Mr. Sands has about potential thermal bridging issues with this combination of bamboo framing spanned by stick framed, plywood faced, and gypsum board lined insulated wall panels? The signature series seems to be a single layer wall without insulation.

Thank you for putting up this video. I've been wanting to grow structural bamboo, but wasn't sure on the species. Would be open to helping with your test and data at our spot.

Why create laminate and plywood instead of just using the bamboo culms?

I would have liked more than 30 second discussion of the local environmental impact. How is this different from every other haole who showed up claiming the miracle benefits of an introduced species, strawberry guava, haole koa, guinea grass (and that was as recent as the 1980s), blackberry, Himalayan ginger, red mangrove from Florida, the list is very very long. I’m not saying this doesn’t hold potential. I’m saying your focus on economic benefit ( which took up 80% of the discussion), your utter disregard for the opinions of our indigenous kūpuna on the matter, your failure to address the potential impacts if a farm goes defunct, your failure to address all the currently choked out rivers from bamboo, and a general lack of humility need serious address before you can gain community support.

Aloha Ann? This is the second video blog on this subject. There will be more as you suggest. David Sands and I will be visiting the folks on Maui who have many years experience in building with bamboo. Bamboo, ‘ohe, is a canoe plant. The ancient Hawaiians brought the clumping varieties. We need to do it in the right way. .
