They also make plywood and dimensional lumber from bamboo by glueing together large group of slats, laid out correctly and then pressing them into shape under high pressure and oven baking them so that the glue is both permanent and waterproof. Just like other plywood and laminated lumber made from other woods. Bamboo is now also used because of how fast it grows, more timber is grown in a much shorter time than full sized trees. I was surprised that none of this was featured, just decorative lumber and tiny items which have been made for thousands of years. Excepting the replacement for plastic tableware and straws.

Bamboo hasn’t got the stability for high houses. Until a German architect found out how to give bamboo a stability of more than 100 years. The bamboo has to get in the middle a hole by a very long thin iron piece. Now each piece of such bamboo sticks are placed into a specific acid juice which creates the new stability. Visit Bali and you will be amazed seeing the most beautiful bamboo houses.

It was surprising that the focus was solely on decorative items and small, traditional bamboo crafts, rather than highlighting the advanced uses of bamboo like plywood and dimensional lumber. Modern techniques involve bonding bamboo slats with glue, pressing them under high pressure, and baking them to create durable, waterproof materials, similar to conventional wood products. Given bamboo's rapid growth rate, which yields timber much faster than trees, it’s odd that this wasn’t showcased-especially with its increasing role in sustainable alternatives, like replacing plastic in tableware and straws. If you ever plan on growing bamboo make sure it's the variety that doesn't spread. I purchased a property from a couple who were growing bamboo that was huge for wood. They used a variety that spread via roots underground. They cut it all back for the sale so I found out later when it started shooting up all over the property. Even digging it up failed to remove it all. I used what I could but later sold my property again as it was too much work keeping it out of drains and the house foundations. Its also a weed and can result in a fine in most areas. I informed the new owners about it when they first viewed my property and they were ok with it. I doubt the are now years later...

Every material, whether natural or man-made has its pros and cons. Every material can have a long life if treated properly. All depends on purpose, environment and care. Bamboo is fascinating and is so versatile, cheap and easily replaced.

1:00 Video explains that bamboo is started from new shoots on rhizomes then shows some man cutting the growing tip, the apical meristem, from a shoot of a mature bamboo, leaving behind the base of the shoot. What he cut off will most likely die, rot then die. It needs the whole shoot and a bit of rhizome to develop roots to feed the growing tip. In any case, the video then goes on to show someone planting bamboo seeds, so apparently, I am right and that little piece he cut died.
