As a Bangladeshi citizen, it's concerning to see western countries showing such interest in the elections of a far-off south Asian nation like Bangladesh. Typically when the USA gets involved in another country's affairs, there's usually a clear motive behind it. From what I've heard, there are claims that the BNP has struck deals with the US government, allowing the setup of US military bases on the Saint Martin islands. There's also talk of the BNP actively plotting to overthrow the current government. Throughout history, the USA has been known to orchestrate regime changes, replacing governments that didn't align with their preferences. The concern now is whether a similar scenario might unfold in Bangladesh. The USA has its own significant issues to contend with, and we shouldn't be a cause for concern on their agenda.

As a Bangladeshi, I am very concerned due to the US poking their nose this time. On the one hand, I have seen the corruption in the AL government and how they abuse power and would be glad to have them replaced by someone better. At the same time, the AL did manage to get some good things done like projects such as the Padma Bridge, Dhaka Mass Transit Metro rail, Chittagong double line, Karnaphuli tunnel and other projects as well as modernization of the Army and Navy (Air Force is still neglected) and I am not confident that the BNP would be competent enough to keep things going forward as they have often undid many positive developments of their opposition purely out of spite like the Mig-29 case where they stopped the purchase of advanced fighter jets decades ago when the BAF needed them. Plus, if BNP comes into power with US help, we might see them employ the infamous capitalist shock doctrine to cut down public welfare and allocate taxes to helping big private industries and elites, like how the US did in Iraq after its occupation or in Russia after the Soviet Collapse which led to the rise of the corrupt Russian oligarchy.

As a Bangladeshi, I would rather live under an autocratic secular government than an Islamic fundamentalist one. During BNP's rule, terrorism was rampant in Bangladesh, and poverty was extreme; then Bangladesh Awami League came into power in 2008, cracked down on terrorists, took many development projects, curved poverty, and built many infrastructures. Yes, I know poverty is still high, but it will be reduced under BAL. Bangladesh is an extremely young nation I think BD doesn't need democracy now (we can have that 20 to 30 years later when the country becomes developed enough). Any Bangladeshis who think that BNP or Islamic andolon will fix our nation are just emotional idiots, BNP ( a nationalistic party and supporter of Islamic fundamentalism) or Islami andolon Bangladesh (a far-right Islamist party) will make this country worse and terrorism will rise to the extreme and people will have worse lives than our current government.

While I like democracy more than authoritarianism, I think it is also important to look at the comparison in more specific context and see the pros and cons of both. China is straight up authoritarian. Japan has one ruling party 1955 to now except for 4 year. It is essentially a one party state very similar to China. South Korean has dictators, Roh Tae-woo and Chun Doo-hwan, from 1963 (got power from coup) to 1988. Singapore has an effective dictator from 1959 to 1990. Among the most prosperous Asian countries, only india is a proper democracy. Most western democracy became democratic around 1920s. In other words, they got rich way before they become democratic. When a population is uneducated, there is a good argument democracy is not necessarily the best... and even if democratic on average is still better, I don't think it is a good idea to destroy a well performing dictatorship. Now most studies I have seen do say becoming democratic promote economic growth on average, but destroying a better-than-average dictatorship (like south korea and japan during their fast development period) and make them a failed state with starving people, is just not right.
@Kossumies69 ай бұрын
The thing is that's often misunderstood about the main point of democracy: they don't necessarily get better leaders than autocratic countries, but they can get rid of bad leaders without anyone losing their head or getting sent into financial destitution. But also as you said, when people have to spend the majority of their time to just get enough food to survive they don't get the space to focus on politics and broader effects of it in their society. Vulnerable people in an exploitable position.
@krashme9979 ай бұрын
Seems like you're stretching your argument extremely thin in order to make your point. Japan isn't "very similar" to Japan. Not even close. And countries having had dictators before doesn't mean they aren't "proper democracies". Democracies aren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but dictatorships have far too much power with little incentive to improve their country, except for very few examples throughout history. Dictators main interest is survival, which means filling insitutions with loyal yesmen and caring little for improvements, while politicians in democracies have to satisfy voters in order to stay in power. Also, even if western democracies were rich in the early 1900's, WWII destroyed entire countries. Hell, even Japan was razed to the ground and came back stronger than ever. Taiwan's GDP per capita is far higher than mainland China. Can we input those successes entirely to them being democracies? Probably not, but it sure did play into it. China could have become a far bigger superpower, far earlier if it hadn't been for dictator Mao's misguided policies and its obsession with waging war on its own people and country rather than improving it.
