Bangladesh was always supposed to be poor. At the dawn of its existence it was already a failing state. Not only did the war of independence destroy nearly every farm, factory, road and bridge, but it came just 4 months after Bangladesh was hammered with the most destructive tropical cyclone in record history. Yet, even more daunting was the reality that Bangladesh, deprived of considerable natural resources, habitually subjected to catastrophic natural disasters, and haunted by perpetual and often violent political instability, seemed devoid of a clear path toward making things better. It was a widespread perception that Bangladesh was destined to be forever synonymous with poverty and suffering, earning it the unflattering label, as an “international basket case”.
But Astonishingly, against all conceivable odds, the past three decades have seen the country achieve, perhaps the most significant advancement in quality of life indicators of any place in the world, ever. Life expectancy has soared by 180%, while fatalities from tropical cyclones have been reduced by a staggering 100-fold. Poverty rates have dived from 80% to less than 19, while the child mortality rate has been cut by 92%. Its economy has emerged as one of the fastest growing in the world, with its GDP per capita once 50% less than Pakistan’s now almost 50% higher. And In 2019, it overtook even India, all while harboring aspirations of reaching high-income status by 2041. But how can a nation with all the odds stacked against it improve at such a blistering pace, Is this truly another economic miracle or a mirage that will painfully wither away.

I remember raising money for Bangladesh as a school kid in the 1970s in Australia. We donated millions from country regions of NSW Australia alone. We were horrified by the images of starving people and did everything we could to help. Whole towns did charity drives and events to raise money for Bangladesh. Good too see you guys have good food supply now. We always try help when you guys get hit by floods. Australia set up a few NGOs With the money we raised in the 70s and 80s.

I’m Vietnamese, during my study course in South Korea, i met a few Bangladesh students, we live in the same building near the school and they are even nicer to me than other Vietnamese. As a Dutchie, Bangladeshi geography looks quite similar to that of the Netherlands. Ecxcept that is is even more extreme in what the Netherlands is known for: even bigger rivers, higher population density and more land below sealevel. I hope Dutch engineers can help protect Bangladesh against water related issues and increase agricultural production. There seems to be a lot of potential 🇳🇱🤝🇧🇩

Bangladesh actually do use a lot of help from Japanese and Korean engineers/consultants for its river protection projects. Particularly because, not only that we have a low land our land is also very soft. Making small little highways require at least two story mud structure for supporting those highways, Japanese engineers come particularly handy because they face the same problem building highways in their country. Good to hear the Dutch people face the same too... Hopefully we could see some more of you guys in the future

We were colonised and looted by the British for 250 years, faced a famine that was created by the British which killed a Million, occupied and looted by Pakistan for 24 years, lost nearly 3M people by Pakistan alone in 1971, endured deadly cyclones which killed hundreds of thousands, faced military coups, corruption, a brain drain, religious tensions, sea level rise, heavy monsoons, densely populated and finally sheltered 1M Rohingyans. As a Filipino working overseas, I have seen that most Bangladeshis are being taken advantage of. They work in areas where no one would want to work, mostly in the cleaning services. They are in bottom of the barrel in labor opportunities, if I would say. Their accommodation and salaries are deplorable. Yet, they work their a$$es off, with many of them without complaints. I always wish them that their condition would improve. News like this make me happy for them. I hope that the country would prioritize education so much more, so that most of them would get higher level of jobs for the betterment of their family and country.

A Greek-Cypriot here. I 've never been to Bangladesh but we have a lot of migrants in my country. Really nice people, the vast majority of them at least. Hard workers and very polite and respectful. I'm happr that Bangladesh is becoming more prosperous. There's a brain drain of skilled workers to the West, The country should find a way to keep them there and attract even other skilled people from other places. Anyway, I wish the country the best.

@@CasualScholar I do doubt it is a classic Western mindset talking about the problems of Bangladesh. Imo Poor nations NEED a working autocracy to drag it forward, no matter how corrupted it is. China had the problems you said for decades, but still growing faster than the developed world. Democracy is the method to maintain social stability without cruelty, democracy is NOT the magic key to wealth. Without autocracy, the miracles of South Korea & Taiwan & China & Singapore & Vietnam would NEVER have happened. So many countries, Argentina, India, Philipines, tried to build a democracy before getting rich, what they got? Democracy or wealth? None. It only divides the country, preventing them from building competetive industries, resulting in oligarchy. It is a country, not a city state, a country needs to create a cluster of working industries by force, to make people not starve, then consider if they want to free the people or continue ruling over them. Let's say it is 1980, and China decides to compete in world trade to jump start the economy. If it is a "democracy", how would it make decisions? There are provinces making huge sacrifices, and provinces that gain so much benefit as ports. Just take a look at India. Each president consider their oligarch region. When Modi is in charge, all amazing things would happen in Gujarat just because Modi started as a buraucrat here, what would happen if the next president has no interest in Gujarat? There will be nothing consistent, only endless loops of blaming each other, fighting for interests without thriving for the whole picture. But it is China, if the central government dictates a position for the province, it has to stay that way, no other ways around. If a province is dictated to farming, it has to, and it won't change into a tourism-oriented, or financing-based state based on their preferences. All the main funding goes into building few spheres of industry hubs, while the most provinces pay the check, watching their equal brothers get rich and they cannot complain. South Korea and Taiwan became a democracy because their leaders was firstly autocratic, then decided to free it after the fundamental industries being set (also thanks to their people for fighting for freedom). Singapore and Vietnam was more of a autocracy but with organic methods of political negotiation. And it is compeletely possible that these 2 countries would slowly turn from autocracy to complete democracy. China, on the other hand, has based their autocracy, fearing of a huge domestic unrest, on the basis of high-tech policing and information control - their autocracy, with immense kills, is more of a irreversable curse, and would create huge civil unrest / humanitarian crisis if lifted - that's why China would always stay autocratic, or it would face the fate much worse than the USSR.

Infrastructure, electronic manufacturing, all viable if there is a stable political environment - in which, personally, I do believe in an autocracy being very much correct, in order to steadily carry on the building of all the infrastructures, and the advancement of education system. China was also extremely corrupt at its rapid growth (they did partially control the corruption, but it was like from only 8 years ago, corruption was outrageous for decades), so I believe before becoming a higher middle income country, Bangladeshi should worry about political stability more than corruption. It really is a lesser of 2 evil, just personally speaking. I would assume there are still 1-3 decades for all the build up, in order to come after Vietnam as a new manufacture hub of Asia. After all, Bangladesh is not plagued by fanatic communists or military junta, so it won't be a bloody irreversable autocracy.

The opening sequence makes it seem like Bangladesh declared independence for no particular reason, and this caused a genocide. At the time, Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) was home to the majority of Pakistan's population. Sheikh Rahman (the guy who declared independence) won the 1970 general election (his party gained an outright majority), but West Pakistan refused to let him govern, Bangladeshis protested, Pakistan started a brutal crackdown, Bangladesh declared independence, then the genocide got started in full force.

Agreed. We didn’t mind being East Bengal, and even tolerated being renamed to East Pakistan. But Pakistan crossed the line when they tried to take away our language by replacing it with Urdu. Bangla truly is an amazing language. Bengal was actually known as the “land at the end of the world” since it was practically impassible at that time by normal means. This meant travelers journeying to China would stop at Bengal for a bit, thus impacting the locals with their language and culture. Same for the travelers coming from China, as Bengal was the first place they stopped at to recuperate before continuing their journey. So we were basically impacted by the whole world. It’s also why Bengali people can move anywhere in the world and learn the language, since Bangla already has a wide range of articulations. Fun fact: The Bangladesh Liberation War is the only war in history so far in which the conflict was predicated on defending a language.

Bengal was actually the richest province in the richest country in the world before the British cam a looting. I am copying below I comment I have made about the British in India in which Bengal features prominently. India actually had the world's largest economy (over 25% of global GDP) in the early 18th Century prior to British occupation, deindustrialization and looting of India's resources. Research published by Columbia UP in 2018 showed that the British stole about US45 Trillion from India from 1757-1938 (see Prof. Jason Hickel's article online about how modern Britain was built with loot from India). Britain's Industrial Revolution and much Western development was financed by 'loot' (Hindi for plunder) from India. India's world leading textile industry was systematically eliminated by the Brits so that Britain's new industrial cotton industry [copying Indian techniques and styles - e.g. 'Paisley'] could develop as 19th Century historians H.H. Wilson and Friedrich List both noted. This included tariff barriers, making India a monopolized Captive Market for British goods and breaking weavers fingers and even cutting off thumbs of the famed Dhaka Muslin weavers. Governor General Bentinck wrote that the plains of India are bleached with the bones of her weavers. India had produced the best steel in the world (Wootz) as recognized by English experts in the 1790s - and Sheffield copied its methods. French and British colonial observers noted that 18th Century India made cannon and muskets as good as any in Europe but arms production was eliminated. The oldest seaworthy ship in the Royal Navy HMS Trincomalee was built by an Indian Co. in 1817 but British competitors stopped shipbuilding in India. When 19th Century Indian engineers showed that they could design and build locomotives, this was of course suppressed. It was not until the 1914-18 Great War in Europe that India was allowed to develop some industrial capacity - then only due to Britain's emergency needs. They also killed tens of millions of the poorest in about 3 dozen famines created by Britain stealing India's foodgrains for British profit and Food Security. See also Sullvan and Hickel’s (2022) online AJ English article ‘How British Colonialism Killed 100 million Indians in 40 Years’. Robert Clive returned from Bengal with his 'loot' as the richest non-monarch in Europe and his East India Co. mafia became the super-rich new elite known as 'nobs' (from 'nabobs') whilst up to 1/3 of the population of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa (up to 10 million) died in the 1770 Great Bengal Famine created by their rapacity - as predicted by Richard Becher (a relative of novelist William Thackeray). This led to Europe's first Credit Crunch in 1772 when dozens of banks collapsed in days as Indian loot financing Western development dried up for a while. The EIC started peddling Indian opium to China from 1770 (kidnapping children to work on opium plantations etc.) which brought Britain 1/7 of its export revenues for 140 years. In 1877 Cornelius Walford showed that there were 30 famines in British-occupied India in just 120 years compared to 17 famines in all of India in the previous 2,000 years. This was because native Hindu and Indianized Muslim rulers acted to prevent and alleviate famines. The British created them with their profiteering, hoarding and exporting for Britain's profit and Food Security [it was Industrial Britain that did not grow enough food to feed itself - until after 1945 - India as a whole always did]. The Disraeli regime even set up Death Camps for victims of the 1877 manmade famine in Madras Province - giving famine victims less starvation rations for hard labour than given in Buchenwald - killing 94% of inmates. 5-7 million died whilst record amounts of Indian grain exports lowered prices in Britain and the West. Famine survivors were coerced into the new slavery of indentured labour in the Caribbean etc. Disraeli organized the biggest feast in human history, the 1877 Delhi Durbar, to celebrate Vicky being named Empress of India whilst 100,000 a week died in South India. In 1901 The Lancet estimated conservatively from the census that 19 million had died of starvation in Western India during the 1890s due to British policies. In 1936 George Orwell wrote in Road to Wigan Pier that 100 million Indians must be forced to the edge of starvation so that the British can live in comfort. As late as 1942-3, Hindu-hating White Supremacist Winston Churchill was responsible for killing millions in Bengal due to Nazi-like Collective Punishment of Bengal and - after British cover-ups were blown by the press in 1943, preventing Food Aid from other countries reaching Bengal, diverting US, Canadian and Australian grain to the UK. As ever, there were surplus food stocks in India as a whole but the Brits ensured they didn't get to Bengal. Even the Nazis allowed Red Cross Food Aid to Greek Famine victims in 1941.

I'm happy for Bangladesh should this become the case. The history isn't complete - Bangladesh was Bengal, which was one of the wealthiest places on Earth until the East India Company completely destroyed their industry and then the British Empire subjected their people to multiple famines, right up through WWII.

I like how you've clarified some history, but I believe you miss out on some of more recent history that almost repeated itself and would've exacerbated the plight of the Bangladeshi people. In 1971, the British and the Americans, along with China and Sri Lanka actively sided with Pakistan's wish to take over Bangladesh by means of sheer violence. By doing this, they legitimized the genocide being conducted by the Pakistani Army over there. When India decided to step in and liberate Bangladesh from the genocidal Pakistani regime, the United States and Britain also sent their submarines towards Bay of Bengal to threaten India with nuclear war if they did the right thing. It was the Russians who stepped in to help India and root for them in this cause by sending their nuclear subs to the Bay of Bengal to bugger off the Americans and the Brits.

Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had concluded that instead of taking in millions of refugees, India would be economically better off going to war against Pakistan. As early as 28 April 1971, the Indian Cabinet had asked General Manekshaw (Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee) to "Go into East Pakistan". Hostile relations in the past between India and Pakistan added to India's decision to intervene in Pakistan's civil war. As a result, the Indian government decided to support the creation of a separate state for ethnic Bengalis by supporting the Mukti Bahini. RAW helped to organise, train and arm these insurgents. Consequently, the Mukti Bahini succeeded in harassing Pakistani military in East Pakistan, thus creating conditions conducive for a full-scale Indian military intervention in early December. The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) launched a pre-emptive strike on Indian Air Force bases on 3 December 1971. The attack was modelled on the Israeli Air Force's Operation Focus during the Six-Day War, and intended to neutralise the Indian Air Force planes on the ground. The strike was seen by India as an open act of unprovoked aggression, which marked the official start of the Indo-Pakistani War. As a response to the attack, both India and Pakistan formally acknowledged the "existence of a state of war between the two countries" even though neither government had formally issued a declaration of war. Bangladesh lost the preferential trade agreement with the US several years ago. The US decided to strip off the preferential trade agreement based on some alleged human rights violation claims. However, it has not stopped the trade growth with the US. Bangladesh still has a preferential agreement with the European Union and it will last until 2029 (because of three year transition period). Bangladesh is attempting to make a new deal with the EU to retain some of those benefits after 2029. In terms of export diversity, Bangladesh is making some strides in ICT, Pharmaceutical, Shipbuilding, and light engineering manufacturing. Right now, Bangladesh is producing most household appliances like refrigerators, micro-oven, TV, and other stuff like this. Bangladesh is also assembling cars, bikes, smartphones, etc. Some of these are fully Bangladesh owned. In the coming years, this can enormously help in reducing trade deficits with China as Bangladesh imports more than $20 billion worth of products from the country. One of the reasons the garment export share remains as high as 80% continuously is because it's growing fast along with other exports. So, Bangladeshis should remain hopeful. Though forex has declined in the last one year, as a result of the Ukraine-Russia war and high commodity prices, it will get better in mid-2024.

America has already declared no one is allowed to trade or help Bangladesh. Just a couple days ago it warned India to not intervene in the embargo. America is literally flying drones and has warships in the waters of the Bay of Bengal to make sure. They are not kidding when they say the corrupt Awami League needs to step down and hold free election. They aren’t doing it because they know the BNP would win. Let’s see how long Sheikh Hasina can survive without international aid.

Funnily sweat shops are a big driver of growth there. Which is fair because anyone who has done rice farming (my family did) would rather clock sizable shifts in a garment sweat shop 😅. Funnily Bangladeshis and international companies are being accused of human rights violations so that Bangladesh garment manufacturing will lose its competitive advantage so it won't compete as well as it used to.

Bengal was actually the richest province in the richest country in the world before the British cam a looting. I am copying below I comment I have made about the British in India in which Bengal features prominently. India actually had the world's largest economy (over 25% of global GDP) in the early 18th Century prior to British occupation, deindustrialization and looting of India's resources. Research published by Columbia UP in 2018 showed that the British stole about US45 Trillion from India from 1757-1938 (see Prof. Jason Hickel's article online about how modern Britain was built with loot from India). Britain's Industrial Revolution and much Western development was financed by 'loot' (Hindi for plunder) from India. India's world leading textile industry was systematically eliminated by the Brits so that Britain's new industrial cotton industry [copying Indian techniques and styles - e.g. 'Paisley'] could develop as 19th Century historians H.H. Wilson and Friedrich List both noted. This included tariff barriers, making India a monopolized Captive Market for British goods and breaking weavers fingers and even cutting off thumbs of the famed Dhaka Muslin weavers. Governor General Bentinck wrote that the plains of India are bleached with the bones of her weavers. India had produced the best steel in the world (Wootz) as recognized by English experts in the 1790s - and Sheffield copied its methods. French and British colonial observers noted that 18th Century India made cannon and muskets as good as any in Europe but arms production was eliminated. The oldest seaworthy ship in the Royal Navy HMS Trincomalee was built by an Indian Co. in 1817 but British competitors stopped shipbuilding in India. When 19th Century Indian engineers showed that they could design and build locomotives, this was of course suppressed. It was not until the 1914-18 Great War in Europe that India was allowed to develop some industrial capacity - then only due to Britain's emergency needs. They also killed tens of millions of the poorest in about 3 dozen famines created by Britain stealing India's foodgrains for British profit and Food Security. See also Sullvan and Hickel’s (2022) online AJ English article ‘How British Colonialism Killed 100 million Indians in 40 Years’. Robert Clive returned from Bengal with his 'loot' as the richest non-monarch in Europe and his East India Co. mafia became the super-rich new elite known as 'nobs' (from 'nabobs') whilst up to 1/3 of the population of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa (up to 10 million) died in the 1770 Great Bengal Famine created by their rapacity - as predicted by Richard Becher (a relative of novelist William Thackeray). This led to Europe's first Credit Crunch in 1772 when dozens of banks collapsed in days as Indian loot financing Western development dried up for a while. The EIC started peddling Indian opium to China from 1770 (kidnapping children to work on opium plantations etc.) which brought Britain 1/7 of its export revenues for 140 years. In 1877 Cornelius Walford showed that there were 30 famines in British-occupied India in just 120 years compared to 17 famines in all of India in the previous 2,000 years. This was because native Hindu and Indianized Muslim rulers acted to prevent and alleviate famines. The British created them with their profiteering, hoarding and exporting for Britain's profit and Food Security [it was Industrial Britain that did not grow enough food to feed itself - until after 1945 - India as a whole always did]. The Disraeli regime even set up Death Camps for victims of the 1877 manmade famine in Madras Province - giving famine victims less starvation rations for hard labour than given in Buchenwald - killing 94% of inmates. 5-7 million died whilst record amounts of Indian grain exports lowered prices in Britain and the West. Famine survivors were coerced into the new slavery of indentured labour in the Caribbean etc. Disraeli organized the biggest feast in human history, the 1877 Delhi Durbar, to celebrate Vicky being named Empress of India whilst 100,000 a week died in South India. In 1901 The Lancet estimated conservatively from the census that 19 million had died of starvation in Western India during the 1890s due to British policies. In 1936 George Orwell wrote in Road to Wigan Pier that 100 million Indians must be forced to the edge of starvation so that the British can live in comfort. As late as 1942-3, Hindu-hating White Supremacist Winston Churchill was responsible for killing millions in Bengal due to Nazi-like Collective Punishment of Bengal and - after British cover-ups were blown by the press in 1943, preventing Food Aid from other countries reaching Bengal, diverting US, Canadian and Australian grain to the UK. As ever, there were surplus food stocks in India as a whole but the Brits ensured they didn't get to Bengal. Even the Nazis allowed Red Cross Food Aid to Greek Famine victims in 1941.

Thomas Macaulay whose name is indelibly associated with the introduction of the English Education system in India - in order to create an intermediary class of servile 'brown Englishmen' to serve Britain's looting and genocidal ambitions [search Jason Hickel India for his articles about this on AJEnglish] famously wrote that a single shelf in any European library is worth more than all the literature of Asia and Arabia. To be fair, he actually held the same condescending view of premodern European knowledge. Europeans also claimed well into the 20th Century that Orientals lacked Rationality. However, as Robert Oppenheimer (of Manhattan Project fame) who studied Sanskrit and Indian Philosophy wrote, Ancient Indian Logic was too sophisticated for 18th Century Europeans, 5th Century c.e. Indian Buddhist Dignaga has solved logic problems related to Truth Functions that defeated Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittgenstein in the 20th Century. Ancient Hindu Nyaya Logic was not surpassed in Europe until Boole invented his Boolean logic in the 19th Century. What the Renaissance West called 'Modern Maths' underlying the Scientific Revolution [medieval Arabs called Maths Hindisat - Art of the Hindus] i.e. Modern Arithmetic (considered the greatest intellectual invention of all time], Modern Algebra, Trigonometry and even Infinitesimal Calculus originated in Ancient India (though Calculus was more medieval) - see Christian Yates' Five Ways that Ancient India Changed the World with Maths'. Of course, contra Western mythology, Conceptual Philosophy actually origiinated in India with the Upanishads (Vedanta) centuries before similar ideas were put forward by the Miletians and later Athenians etc. Guy Beck wrote that Ancient India speaks more to 20th Century Europeans (actually more to 21st Century) than to medieval or even-mid 19th Century Europeans. Many Ancient Indian Philosophy concepts dismissed as nonsense by colonial Europeans are now taken seriously in the 20th and 21st Century. Hesenberg and Schrodinger both put on record that their invention of Quantum Mechanics in the 1920s was inspired by Indian Vedantic (Brahmanic) Metaphysics in which the Material World manifests through the energetic vibrations of the Universal Consciousness. Nikola Tesla tried to demonstrate that Matter and Energy were interchangeable in the 1890s given his knowledge of Indian Philosophy where Matter condensed from the energy or subtle matter vibrations of Space (Akasa) - before Einstein's 1905 mass/energy equivalence. Physicists Oliver Lodge and J.C. Bose - who were the first 2 men to send Wireless signals [Marconi's radio work was actually done using Tesla's inventions] were both inspired by the notion of Akasa or the Psychical Aether as Westerners called it. Right up until the late 19th Century many Westerners clung to the Biblical and Greek view that the Earth was just a few thousand years old and that the universe was just the Earth, Sun and a few Planets - the Greeks thought it was also Static. But Professor Willis Harman - who was Head of Stanford Research Institute when the CIA conducted Psychic Studies including successful Psychic Spying (Remote Viewing) - Project Stargate - as confirmed by Jimmy Carter - wrote that the Science of the Future which will be able to explain Consciousness and Anomalous Phenomena will be based on Indian Metaphysics with its Primacy of Consciousness and Transcendental Causation [of which the Materialist world of Space-Time is but a subset].
