Good looking clips and they look strong too. A lot stronger than speaker grill clips that these resemble. I think these would be great for panels in front of range hood boxes. I like that these also use screws instead of friction fit. One question: Could you use a larger forstner bit to countersink the mount plates to make the distance between panel and subsurface virtually nothing?

Yes we have done it many times, 1 1/4" is the diameter of the flange.
