Exactly. When your response is inmediately saying "wow, you're so confident" you are basically telling them that they are rating themeselves higher than they should (otherwise it wouldn't take "confidence" to do it) it comes off as a "backhanded compliment", when they probably were rating themeselves lower than what they really think of themselves, just to avoid coming off as conceited. So, yeah, you are insulting them by telling them that. "Your lowered rating is still too high for you (because you are ugly)"

I really dislike this trend. Nobody should be ‘rating’ themselves or other people (how shallow!). Some of the most attractive, likeable and magnetic people are not perfect in their features at all. They tend to have a wonderful blend of good humour, intelligence, confidence (not cockiness), wit and a welcoming/warm smile instead. Egotistical, vain people are already flawed with that trait.

Even a physically stunning human must still have some things still left to work on themselves (mentally or otherwise) or grow in some way. Having confidence (balanced) and reaching a place where a person can finally accept themselves and all of their imperfections as being perfect, for them and their inner happiness, is something I hope many more can achieve in this life. (Not having to fit on anyone else’s scale; rather, refusing to even be put on one in the first place)

You are thinking arithmetically but conventionally in Europe (not sure if in any country) when you go to school 5 is a Mark which doesn't allow you to get to the next year. It's considered the highest Mark of all the bad marks. From 6 to 10 you have the marks which Will allow you to pass. It's because people consider 'good' as a default. That's also why people consider bad situations, accident as a anomaly, because they like to live in the reality they feel, they are able to control. From 1-5 are bad marks, from 6-10 are good marks. Every person see themselfes, their family more often than other people, so they consider their apperance as a default, and others, with a different details - shorter, longer, bigger lips, smaller nose, darker hair etc. are considered as an anomaly (sometimes more atractive, sometimes less). So that's why they consider theirselves as a '7'. '6' is a pass mark, but it is a shame to feel, you only passed, so '7' is perfect, because you reduce this discomfort plus not gemerate beeing cocky. This movie is one more evidence, how people follow the patterns and their imaginations based on their expectations and habits. "I'm on ok level, and even a little bit above the average, so I'm ok, can proceed and not to worry".
