I had a lot of success using this drill with beginners at the driving ranges I taught in San Antonio back in the '80's. People who had never played golf at all began hitting crisp little draws with a 7-iron, and I never stopped thanking Hogan for coming up with this amazing concept - the man was brilliant.

Hi Steve. If you want to see Hogan demonstrate this drill just youtube search "Ben Hogan five lessons training exercises". You can see him do and explain the drill. It's from a 1950's tv show he did.

Another great drill Steve, Ben Hogan certainly was the master of golf. I remember an old Nick Faldo video tape he used to put a towel tucked under the tops of the arms, which I am assuming will give the same “tight” feeling. 😊

Literally just watched this this morning and took it out to the drivingrange. Love it, my short chips have some lovely high ark going now and good strike. Very excited about this feel, even got my gf who is second time ever with a club in hand to feel the lower body directing the swing and some results too

Hi Steve Thank you for running through Ben Hogan’s drill but I would really appreciate it if you could run through it again with the driver. I’m hoping that it would will be just as easy. I find that the extra length of the driver makes it so much more difficult to keep on plane. I shall look forward to your reply.

Any thoughts whether this would benefit a 65 year old man of slight build? As such a specimen I feel the need for the assistance of the leverage created by the swinging of the arms. Thanks

Again, I thinned some shots, as I tried to hit at the ball, with the wrists, to gain distance, lost in the half swing. I think this resulted in a "scooping" action, hence the thin.

Interesting, I've been doing just this, for several weeks now and it's surprising how well one strikes the ball. I've tried to allow the wrists to hinge in a natural way, with no effort to hit at the ball.

Problem - 5 lessons description of the back-swing says the hips turn last and are restricted from turning until the turning shoulders force the hips to turn - pgs 70 & 71

This is a drill not a swing. Big difference.
@kirkclements48932 жыл бұрын
@@whenmullet2674 I understand the purpose of the drill is to train the body to correctly get the downswing - but it is also training an incorrect backswing - thus "Problem"
@whenmullet26742 жыл бұрын
@@kirkclements4893 I guess when Tiger does his stick his butt out 2 feet on a downswing or makes an overly inside out practice swing those are problems too. I wish I had Mr Hogan and Woods' problems.

This is a drill.
@kirkclements48932 жыл бұрын
@@stevejohnstongolf I am not saying the drill is bad or good - I just think that being aware of the "problem" is better than not being aware of the "problem" - Every drill is an exaggeration of some part of the swing to focus awareness.

If you notice, tour players very often do their practice swing waist to waist, might be channeling Ben Hogan?
@artisaprimus630611 ай бұрын
Golf can be so frustrating. One swing can be perfect and you hit the ball in the sweet spot. You don't feel any vibration in your hands and the ball flies away. The very next swing you did a hole in the ground. It's just not like other sports.
@stevejohnstongolf11 ай бұрын

Yes okay, sorry but that was it. Basically, 80% of all golf swing approaches can go to waste. Just follow these steps like a command until you start having nightmares about it, then you are done with the golf swing and can move on to other parts of the game.

I don’t think you will hit the ball out of your shadow that way Steve 🥴
