How Beneficial is creating alternate characters now in ESO?

ESO has one of the best alternate character leveling experiences in MMO"s. Not only is it easy to level up, having multiple characters gives you a lot of benefits. But now with Deadlands DLC and Update 32, does the armory system make a case to not make a ton of characters anymore?

But the playing field has already been heavily narrowed down to just the top 3 meta races which would be high elf, dark elf and khajit so tho the idea of "omg I want to be a mag nord sorc" sounds amazing it isn't the "meta" build so lots of people don't play or parade around w/a mag nord sorc

14 alt characters, most of which are max level crafters and fully geared. I've had fun with them all, i only worry about achievements on my main but the alts are fun to play for xp, transmutes, and loooots of extra gold earned.

I have some alts for writs and to have a variety of playstyles. I have my main that I do the story content on but need a change from time to time. The primary gripe that I have about alts is starting over with the mount training... that needs to get the same treatment as the vamp, ww, psijic skill lines. Max on one character to unlock it in the Crown Store.

Casually played for 4 months now. I have one character. Working my way through zones gathering skill points and leveling crafting. New changes will allow me to actually create a new character one day. There is so much in ESO. I will be able to start over and play in zones never visited by my main.

@Terry Donelson Well, as mentioned I have ADHD and love switching between characters(Though I created too many, and now have to spend a bit of time to figure out what a given toon is doing each time, which is annoying. I will say that you only need one crafting toon - on the others, when you have skillpoints available, I would start sinking points in decon (usually third down on crafting tree). That way you can decon junk on any character immediately - selling any blue(or above) gear will net you a lot less than the component bits will!

One additional perk of having additional characters is the material hirilings, that you can setup with each of them in the crafting skill lines, it help to passively get tons of materials for free without needing to worry about farming for them for hours.

I feel pretty sure they are working on this. I have seen Rich Lambert talk about it a few times so I know they are aware people want it. So I expect they would have it on their broad to-do list unless they can't figure it out technically

@@areadhead of all the things in the game they've done so far I doubt it's a matter of being too complicated. I think they are just focused on improving actual gameplay and all that to preserve the playerbase. my guess is the achievement sharing will be announced as a surprise in the future

Yes they are just for the writ gold as well as writ and hireling resources. I've got over 200 Rosin, Temps and Dreugh Wax without even doing much just from that on 12 character's

They are also great for farming transmute crystals and pledge keys. Thats the other main reason I have multiple alts.

I like leveling up characters, and having very different characters. Plus, the Armory is not free if you need to buy extra Armory slots for 1500 Crowns each. But the main reason for different characters is to mule items. Sure, the collection and transmute system helps create weapons and armor, but it still has a cost in transmute crystals. But there are many items besides equipment: Treasure Maps, Crafting Surveys, Furniture, Potions, parts of Collectibles, Soul Gems, Lockpicks, Recipes, Furniture blueprints, Research items, stuff you are waiting to sell in the Guild Trader. I have full ESO Plus, 16 characters, full bank space, all the treasure chests. And I still have trouble storing everything. Most of my races are non-meta on purpose because I found it makes no discernible difference. Sure, target dummy, but that’s not real gameplay.

I can't even imagine deleting 1680 inventory slots. Similarly, missing out on the potential extra 16 Enchanting Hireling deliveries per day, 16 Provisioner Hireling deliveries per day, and 16 Clothier Hireling deliveries per day would probably cause me something akin to actual physical pain. @@andyd3447 at the moment I have several characters that can craft but are not maxed out in the professions and able to craft at the highest level because it takes quite a few points. This way I can just use points I already have. I haven't tested it yet as I am on console but hopefully I can just dump all points into crafting then switch back to a normal skillset afterwards

Had my Nord DK Tank since launch in 2014 as my main guy who did all the quests, has all skyshards, etc. I have an alternative set with him using the Draugr set to do overland activities but having him finally be able to clear content quick will be great for me. Always stayed tank for quick queues.

I think they'll still be beneficial to a degree - I'll be able to go through my various characters and make them mag and stam (or a hybrid, perhaps) - my main is a sorc, so I'll make a stam version of him in the armory. No more separate sorcs, but there will still be plenty of alts I want to keep. And story-wise, I still like to go through the story again and make different decisions on some of the quests.

I was really wanting to see my main magicka healer char using a heavy armor style, a giant 2H sword and being stamina as well. Of course without need to re spec and invest gold and time doing it. I would say 5-6 bank toons is a nice middle ground. I've found that to be pretty balanced with the option of farming/writs and it's not so overwhelming.

The problem is that there isn’t any race that does well on all 4 roles except maybe a khajiit but they’re not amazing, so I don’t see how you’re going to switch from role to role on the same race. You’ll need alts for different things.

And yeah switching between pvp and pve will be nice, also just swapping between different builds for different content like I can just seamlessly swap to my vAS2 setup, or vCR3, etc.

Thanks man. This was a nicely balanced debate. I am on xbox and can't wait for the armory to arrive. But I have my alts because they present different role play opptions. The races and classes give different feels to the game. But the armory will make it much more managable as I can have less alts, achieve more with the alts I have and still keep my role play opptions open 😎

I have four characters. I found this was the most I could do daily crafting writs (with related inventory management) in less than an hour. I also divided the crafting skills up between the characters, so that skill points, gold and time is concentrated in their specialties and other crafting lines just drift up: High elf dk tank - blacksmith & provisioning Wood elf warden stamina dd - wood & antiquities HE sorcerer Magika dd - cloth & enchanting HE Templar healer - alchemy & jewellery

I recently got on after a few years off. I originally had my main dps, then I eventually got a tank and healer, just cause those are such different styles of play, then I got a few more for writs now I have 10. I think I'll keep it at that. I want to lvl them all up just to see if there are any differences in how they play. Also I have different classes just for something different. It does get tedious getting them lvled and getting them in all the guilds. Put ya, good points I'll keep what I have and make sure I really need anymore, but having a few alts is still good.

I play three characters and have nine total. The alts are good for storage space and I made sure to have a character in each alliance so I could easily do quests in cyrodil for endeavors when the town is captured by a new aliliance.

Actually, I was thinking the same thing when I learned about the armory system. Currently I have 3 DK's and was like, I could delete one. It does remain true that perhaps I would like to try one class on another race but I don't pvp much so I dont really have that as an issue, so the race factor becomes negligible. So this system makes me wonder if they are planning on introducing new classes and class change tokens in the near future.

It starts at 1 with the choice to do or skip the tutorial island. If you skip it you are sent to Blackwood boosted to level 3. You can share your bank, player guilds, and your cp points with your main character and you get to use the cp points allocated how you choose on each character. Everything else you start at scratch and have to level up weapon and armor lines and class skills and guilds like mages and fighters from zero. You also have level horse bonuses separately.

The number of character slots should determined how many trail runs you can do, or a max of 3 runs on the account.

That inventory space is an important factor...the inventory pets will increase 10 per character across 18 characters equals 180 items your account can store. that without any bag upgrades. I just hope fake tanks will at least have a taunt now with the armory system ......

The Armoury doesn't allow you to change your skill set like from a Dragonborn to a warden so i would say it depends if you get a kick out of replaying old content with a different skill set.

I just recently started playing. Maybe 150 hours total played. Im CP318. I play a breton templar. Armory will be nice to save a tank, healer, solo set. And then one for crafting. So i see myself having 4 loadouts. As for alts i see myself personally having a sorc at some point for farming stuff to send to my main templar. And then a fun character like a thief who just steals stuff and what not. So for me. A main who does everything, a dedicated farmer, and a fun mess around character.

My man I really don't think that you are in tune with what a casual player is like. I work 50 hours a week. I have about 12 to 16 hours to game every week. I like to play multiple games in my free time and within that rotation is ESO. I've been playing the game for the better part of two months. I play almost every other night for an hour and a half or so. Mostly just go around doing random quests. I have a level 42 sorc and a level 16 Warden. I will likely never make more than four characters. I just could not find the time. Take a look at the video by Josh Strife Hayes. Casual MMO players sometimes only play as little as a few hours per week. A conversation about 18, or hell even 9 characters it's so far out of the spectrum of casual players. I think the reason why they made this changes because of people like myself who actually end up making up a large percentage of the player base.

'Why do people create alternate characters?' For me, because I can't get Nightblade skills on my Templar main, or Sorcerer skills on Nightblade or Templar, etc. Until they released the Armory system, I had 'roles' for my characters, too. Templar is healer and is dipping into crafter; Nightblade is thief/assassin. I've got other characters with other classes, and I'm trying to figure out their roles (like my newly-50 Necromancer). Found out last night that, unless I'm doing something wrong, I can only use the Armory system with one character. Templar, I've got a Work In Progress build for a Stam-based build, more so for thief/assassin stuff. I brought my Nightblade to the Armory last night, though, and... couldn't even interact with the Armory. (Nightblade was going to be more straightforward; a build for thief/assassin activities, and a build that lets me focus on a broader variety of PvE stuff.) No idea if buying an Armory Slot will enable me to use the Armory on my Nightblade. In the meantime, if the Armory *is* restricted to a single character, I'll keep doing alts to fulfill other roles. (As commenter Jason H pointed out, if I do all the roles with just one character, I'll get bored.) EDIT: Found out the other night that not even the first character who interacted with the Armory could do so again. Picked it up and put it down again, and it's working just fine on not just my Templar, but also Nightblade. Was just... weird glitch, I guess.

well, it will be pretty expensive to buy armory slots so you have have DD builds for both group and solo, and tank builds for group and solo , and a PVP build, that's 4500 crowns in Armory slots alone, and then you need to carry gear for all those builds filling up your inventory 😞 i have a warden spec'ed for primarily tanking (and related builds), and one for DD (and related builds), post update 32 one would suffice. Same with having a stamDK and a magDK being kinda superfluous now ofc , having as many toons is beneficial when farming transmute crystals because of the daily RND bonus but isn't it funny , i can summon a small cat assistant that provide access to my bank, but my huge Armory assistant doesn't ?

I made all 9 of my alts at the same time. All I did was the daily random dungeon on each one every day and they were all level 50 in less than 2 weeks and I spent less than 10 minutes on each one every day. Also I didn’t do them all every day either so you could do it much faster if you wanted to but I actually don’t have that much time to play.

Almost all my toons are redguards all different classes out of the 9 available to me all different aesthetically, one stamcro with the ebony sword motif who I call blade, one magplar who resembles arkana’s dark magician, one hollow jacked out, shadow of the red mountain, way of fire, grothdarr equipped stamknight etc.. other races are my argonian healer - that’s it! I’d say viable end game options for me are been, my redguard sorc with Medusa, overwhelming surge and llamris - all gold/purple and my necrotank with the undertaker and grace of gloom - all gold/purple. Mostly play nowadays to have fun. Haven’t hit trials or pvp for over a year

@@serafimb2319 yes, getting 25k alliance points (tier 1) in your selected home campaign any time before the campaign ends will result in a geode of 50 transmutation crystals (assuming you selected a 30 day campaign) when the campaign ends regardless of who wins. You will also get gold and stone repair kits. There are more rewards depending on being high enough on the leaderboard and whose faction wins but I don't pay attention to the qualifiers for that, I just pocket the jewelry if I get it.

It's a huge difference that I can 500 transmute stones each month just by playing an Alt toon in Cyrodil about 1 hour on the weekends as opposed to 50,............... and it helps with storage, no arguing that

First I'd like to say I like the addition of the armory and the ability to use more than one build on a character. I think the downside is the impact on the races and 'theme compression' of the game. For what seems to be the majority of the player base with no interest in playing tanks, the racial pool probably just got shrunk down to Dark Elf, Khajit, and maybe High Elf. Even if the majority of players do break down into tank/stam and healer/magika builds, it still tends to make some races like Wood Elves, Redguards, and Argonians (outside of possibly tank/healer options) as dead content. Then if they ever do a major race rework or finally differentiate healing stats from magika dps stats, then it's going to engender major blowback from the community because it breaks their armory setups. They probably should have reworked races before they hybridized gear stats and introduced the armory.

Ever heard of PvP? Wood elf is very popular, orc and imperial too. Nord is used for more than just PvE tanks. Redguard is completely dead, you got that bit right.

The only reason I'm even considering creating more toons is to get more crafting materials from hirelings. I'm currently on Cadwell's Gold and the thought of going over all 3 the alliance zones again feels like a slog.

My advice... Make multiple toons, different classes and builds, I have 5 different tanks and depending on how I feel and the group set up I can optimize everything. Selling yourself short on 1 toon bud...

im ewish to the game and i just love grindy games, but the issue with me is grinding for cp is kinda hard for me after cp 300ish which might not be to other people so when i have time im trying to get all 18 so i can run all rnd's and get a fair amount of exp for my cp grind, then ill also be collecting transmute so i can make sets from them all, and also if i want to i can have 36 different builds with the armorys which might be overkill but if the game doesnt die and i get bored i can experement a lot without messing up characters i like

I have 1 char and i barely keep up with it,talking about 9,17 characters.... crazy(at least for me). On the other hand i have 5 min/max chars in fo76 and im planing to do my 6st.

I can't think of any reasons to make alts other than specifically different classes. You can change your race, sex, name, and now changing builds is way cheaper. I'm not really motivated to try different classes since that would mean getting skill points again (and I've collected an awful lot of skyshards on my main to be able to use skill points on 2 different weapon sets, crafting, class, excavation, guilds, and vampirism). I do have 3 different main characters and a lot of others under 50, which I use only because I don't want my main to be a thief, so I did thieves guild with a new character and now I've completely forgotten about her since I can use the assistant on ALL characters. My 3 mains, ironically two of them are imperial male templars. The first one was my first ever character, I felt bad deleting him after learning how the game works, and since I could change his build eventually, I made him better. My second one is another imperial templar who I stuck with after years now that I learned how to make proper builds (before learning how to respec at shrines). I have my horse maxed out (after a year and a half) and most research done in crafting, so I don't feel nice going back to my original and retrain my horse and do all researching stuff. So my actual main is an imperial templar tank, while my original is an imperial stamplar DPS, which won't be needed anymore with armory. My third one is a female breton necromancer, who was a more experimental build with magic, since I'm not a fan of magic builds at all. But she's actually fun to play with and managed to get her to 50, so now levelling her also levels my other mains. I have a lot of different characters which are just there to look nice. One of them, a thief. I'm interested on trying different classes, but considering that I have a single character who has done pretty much everything, especially upgrading horse and getting enough skyshards, it doesn't feel right to start that sort of grinding again with other classes. At this point I just wish we could get class change tokens, I'd be buying those like crazy. But that's the only reason why people still make alt characters to begin with.

I like alt characters as I enjoy playing each class. I play each character differently and set up differently. I most likely won’t be using the armory much. (ESO is one of the most well rounded game out there. Not just mmo. I say game also. My opinion.)

At the end of every 30 days of Cyro campagin for each char you get 50 Transmute Crystals = Total 900. Everyday 1.8 Mill exp on random dungeons all 18 chars. and more more more...

I have 16 characters but dont have them all with fill skill points etc for some of them. I just like levelling up.
