In this video, we use a practical example on how sophisticated investors in the antiques and collectibles trade use the concept of the Optimal Collecting Grade to their advantage when investing in established third party graded collectibles.
Back in May of 2021 I uploaded a video on the understanding the concept of the Optimal Collecting Grade (OPG). The link to that video is here:
• Investing in Collectib...
This video is the precursor to this one and goes into further detail about the concept of how successful investors can benefit from understanding the Optimal Collecting Grade of established third party graded collectibles.

Hey Shawn, great video! Just want to let you know that you shouldn't listen to what people say when you feel it's a lose-lose situation when it comes to choosing to display your larger investments. Do what you think is right for your channel, for yourself, and don't let people's opinions get to you. You're currently an up and coming KZbinr, and you reached the threshold where you'll never be making a video again without someone in the comments hating on something. So at this point, you do you :)

Do a video series of "What I bought this week." I can't tell if the coin market is approachable, or a fools errand for the uninitiated. It would be cool to see what you buy on a weekly basis from Heritage, Goldin, ebay, FB marketplace/groups, Whatnot, Instagram, and places no one knows of, etc. Or if most high end coins are overpriced for the time being. I sold all my comics on Comiclink last spring/summer to cash out at the high prices being offered. Want to start collecting something again, thinking ancient coins, but at the prices things are at, a mistake could cost you thousands, and sour the experience. Would be cool to see how you navigate the market.

Why is this the optimal grade? Do higher grades appreciate slower? If you had the budget for it, would a higher grade be "more optimal" if it had higher growth? Or is the idea that if you have the budget for a higher grade, you should just be putting that money in a different investment category? Since ms65 is about 3 times the price of an ms64+ for this coin is it better to have one ms65 or three ms64+ coins? Does growth vs liquidity come into play? I have more questions than answers lol!

Items with grades selling for less than a significant jump sounds great for collectors. You might say in doing so you get the best possible bargain but as an investment isn’t that rule also in place when it is sold? Will 64+ grades of this coin outperform the gains on the highest grade possible for this particular coin in the long term?

Great Video Shawn, would love to see more videos on graded sophisticated collectibles, hope you will follow up the coin example with a video on graded currency example. Similar rule applies with currency, condition, grade and rarity are very important, as well as desirability, some notes might be less rare than others, but they will achieve higher prices due to desirability. I believe this to be more true with currency than coins, just my belief, hope you will do a video on this subject. Keep up the good videos, regards Dave.

Diversification, the people that succeed in this market are the ones that buy a little bit of everything they are passionate about and speculate the least. Same goes with stocks, but you don't need 30 stocks, 5-10 high conviction companies and you will outpace the S&P and most collectibles. I don't know any coin collectors, from Gen Z's to boomers. Thanks for the content, I fomo'd into graded games and that has paid off substantially, but I will not HODL anything that has a subjective third party grade.

In the video you said there was no grade between 64+ and MS65 but, you could get a 64+ ⭐️ PL, that’s technically a higher grade below 65. I get what you’re saying, just adding a little more confusion LOL 😉, take care Shawn

Thank you so much, this is awesome to learn! You start to mention it for a second, but could you add a little more detail as to why this happens? Do I understand correct that its a psychological factor, the next grade is such a large jump that the one just below is the most attractive to the most people and also gets pulled higher by the high valuation of the next grade?

People have been using paper money for 100+ years, credit cards for decades. Time has already disproven your theory.
@mattbrosch
@mattbrosch 2 жыл бұрын
@@WondyCoin Actually paper money has been in existence for over 1000 years, with the earliest examples appearing in China during the Song dynasty. CC's, meanwhile, have only been in widespread use for several decades, as you correctly point out. According to the federal reserve, only 30% of commercial transactions are conducted in cash, and cash usage represents a paltry 12.7% of GDP. There are consistent year-over-year declines in cash usage in America, and those who use cash predominantly are defined as low income (i.e. not likely to invest in a 5k graded gold coin). Meanwhile, digital transaction methods are increasingly supplanting paper money use, especially among younger generations. There's plenty of research documenting this from very reputable sources. Will future generations continue to pursue coins and paper currency as a collectible? Who knows, but there is certainly data that underpin the hypothesis that future generations will value this type of collectible less due to their lack of interaction with that medium.
@mattbrosch
@mattbrosch 2 жыл бұрын
@@ReservedInvestments Honestly Shawn that kinda pans out. If we're talking very long time horizons, on the order of decades or longer, digital mediums will have mostly or entirely supplanted physical releases. We're increasingly seeing that currently in the gaming and currency space specifically. A kid born in the 2050s who spends their gaming time in a virtual reality or AR game world that exists entirely on servers is unlikely to want to grow up and own a factory sealed graded copy of Left Super Mario Bros in WATA 9.8 condition. Will there always be some kind of market for these things? Sure. Will the market cap grow with a continued influx of new collectors entering the market? I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if the answer was no. The "collector gene" isn't going anywhere, but it's more likely that the individual behavior will evolve to collecting digital artifacts to decorate the digital world in which people will increasingly spend the majority of their time, rather than investing in physical items with which they've had little interaction to adorn increasingly cramped physical living spaces. I'm sure physical collecting will continue to experience growth in our lifetimes, but what about after that?
