The long story short? If knowing the adult size is an important priority to you, then you should make it a very important priority to carefully select a breeder that is specifically trying to make specific sizes, rather than a breeder who simply crosses morphs into Dwarf and SD blood to have something that sells better than a regular mainland.

Does anyone out there preserve pure mainland localities? or are those just going to die out in the USA like indian pythons already are? Makes me a little sad that people overfocus on BP and small retics and seem to avoid keeping the big locals pure. You cant tell me a pure sulawesi isnt one of the prettiest localities. Idc how big they get, id love to have a pair for breeding. Side note: how are you importing retics from these islands? Is there a way to import pure locals from locals that arent dwarf locals?

It's pretty easy to change that in the industry. Start buying pure locality animals, and tell everyone you can think of to do the same. The reason they are not as popular is because most people can't see what the big fuss is.

@@BrianSmith-jx7td because people like Socal Chris just want to feed into the hate. Assholes will be assholes. Someone got one sick snake from Brian and all of a sudden Brian is a piece of shit, he's a horrible person/breeder! Wait a minute, what about the hundreds of other healthy snakes he sells every year to other people? The point is, shit happens and unfortunately you cannot guarantee perfect health for every animal you sell especially if you're doing the volume Brian and Jay do. Do not discriminate a breeder because you received a sick animal when 97-98% of his sales are satisfied customers. Brian always makes it right with unsatisfied customers and genuinely cares for his animals and the ones he sells.

May I make a recommendation? Start with the smallest bloodline female you can afford. It will cost a bit more up front, but will be a great education in keeping them as she grows, and IF you ever wanted to expand and get more, she will make a good foundation animals for a nice group.

Thank you! Yeah, the locality stuff certainly has made a huge impact. I now have breeder Retics from the size of a corn snake, all the way up! It takes time, and they aren't as cheap as mainlands (to buy, upkeep is another matter), but it is cool that I am able to allow my customers to select the size of Retic they would like to keep. Thanks! I very much believe in making the smallest possible Retics so more people can work with this incredible "bucket list" snake. But I don't have time for fairy tales- if they don't stay small genetically, what's the point? And there certainly are some VERY small genetics in SDs, if you put the time in to start with good founder animals and selective breed for that size, rather than pumping morphs into percentages that don't really mean anything in the end.

@ReachOutReptiles6 жыл бұрын
Underfed and over fed- I agree- very unhealthy. There certainly are very small Super Dwarves out there, but too many people try to take the "easy route" to small snakes. Good selective breeding is the way to go. That being said, if someone is new to keeping SDs, they should really focus on watching the animal's body weight so they can get a feel for how much to feed. After their initial growth as hatchlings, they can easily put on too much weight if kept on the same schedule as the big guys. My goal is always to have animals that reflect healthy wild specimens.

Really good explanation! My wife and I bred Miniature Australian Shepherds and I've seen many of the principles you talk about in our breeding program. Generally when you need small to small you get small with many features and size favoring the female. Commonly we get puppies that are small and large in the same litter I would assume this happens when size breeding retics even with the emphasis on locality and size pairings. Anyway great video you earned a new subscriber.
@ReachOutReptiles6 жыл бұрын
Excellent feedback, and thanks for the subscription! You couldn't be more right, and many of my theories are borrowed at first, and then tested here, from other selective breeding industries. Very few people think like that in the reptile world, and on the contrary- they fight against the idea that this kind of selective breeding can be done! But I guess that's fine by me- it just means I get to continue to be open, honest, share my results, and still not have much competition!

Great video! The breeder who sold mey jampea cross was feeding her a small mouse every 14 days, she was just over 3 foot long and very thin, I normally let my snakes settle for 24 hours before I even turn the lights in let alone feed them, but noticed she was out exploring and looking for food as soon as she warmed up. She was a bit larger than the advert stated so I'd only bought weaner rats and she ate two to three at a time like they were nothing, she ate 10 in three weeks but seemed better for it. I have since put her feeding up to a small rat every 7 days and now she's doing great, I posted a vid of her eating on my channel. Anyway I'm wondering if you can tell me the best amount time between feeds as I don't want to overfeed her.

Thanks for the video. I bought what I thought was just a plain jane standard retic. But after two years of attentive feeding when she is interested; she is still about 5'5" long. She typically gets a med-large rat and a pair of button quail a week usually. It kind of bummed me because I wanted another big ole cuddle buddy. But she is active like a rat snake; all the time. But she is at least a bit personable. So I guess we will keep her.

Do pure locality Kalatoa super dwarf retics show up on the market anymore? I've been perusing the market for a few months and considering one, but haven't really seen any pure localities pop up. I mostly keep dwarf locality boas (Hog Island, Solomon Ground, etc. My largest female is just under 5 feet), but so many folks swear that SDRs are just incredible. I'm honestly afraid of getting hosed and ending up with a 15 foot snake I don't have room for, and having to rehome them.

Retic Hatchling 66% het albino purple and white. Pairing was : Normal mainland het white albino female to a 62% super dwarf lavender albino male. Babies are 31.5% SD. Are you able to sorta kinda tell me what an adult male will end up being? Could he get bigger than 8 feet? Person selling them at less than half the price it would cost of a reputable breeder I know who has 100% SD Kalatoa retics. I love retics, but I don't want a monster.

Unbelievably cool video. Very well presented. But the fact that you used an old school blackboard and chalk for your visual aid, you are sprinting towards rockstar status right quick with me. You already have Jeff Kelly’s endorsement so...keep up the good work!

Thanks! Everything we use is old school (AKA dumpster diving, lol). Saves more money for snake care! And Jeff a top notch dude.
