How Big Sugar Stripped Hawaiians Of Their Own Land And Water

Hawai’i’s sugar industry drained streams to irrigate its crops for over a century, often displacing Native Hawaiian farmers who relied on the water. The last sugar plantation closed in 2016. So why are Native Hawaiian farmers still fighting for their water rights?

As a Hawaiian from Maui, the sugar plantation has been closed since 2016. And the lo’I where he grows his Kalo, Iao Valley diverts water for sewage and drinking water not sugar plants. We also had a massive storm that destroyed the Iao Valley river and smaller rivers. Hawaiians have suffered from companies. But let’s hold those accountable.

Mahalo for posting this. It was very well done. I would love to see more about the rising issues native Hawaiians face in videos like this. The Hawaiians deserve a better standing on media platforms to help get the word out. We need everyone to start being on the same page and recognize native culture and agricultural practices. To become a more sustainable Hawaii. To help Hawaiians rebuild what they have lost. We can only do so much by ourselves. We can only work on our communities and households. We need help from the world to get the bigger picture out to the world.

I am so proud of you brother Kanaka Maoli. My family lost all the land we had rights to. Ni'u Valley, Kalihi Valley, and Maunawili Valley. I know those lands have been sold and resold. I would die to be able to work our land, but at 70 years old, I will never see restitution. BUT! I cry and long for the ILLEGAL U.S. GIVE BACK THE LANDS at Wheeler Air Force Base, Scoffield, and all that Central O'ahu to the Kanaka. Most people don't know this: 15,000 people could be sustained on that land. There is water, and soil and the rocks we need to take care of ourselves. Yet most of the time even the Army doesn't need or use those lands except the rifle range. There is so much water already in "KU TREE" Reservoir, and only those who trained there know that. I went several Times with UH ROTC for Viet Nam training. That water goes down to Wahiwa Reservoir, Lake Wilson, and to the North Shore to the Ocean. I hope someday, they give us our land back, so people don't live at the beach. I now live in Utah and will die here, but I would gladly kokua work the land and to just live in a shack on your A'ina.

Here’s the real problem in Hawaii and I’m Hawaiian born and raised in Hilo but moved to San Jose Calif due to no jobs in Hilo. Hawaiians will not get their rights to their land to their resources because the big business has their lock on the money that is given the state through taxes and such that is paid to the state by these business or wealthy home buyers who pay taxes. The bottom line is the taxes collected pays for all these state workers and as you know you don’t cut the hands that feed you. In order for the Hawaiians to get their resource back and land back you first have to remove the legislators that are slowing down the process in the court system and such. Good Luck to all Hawaiians that want the rights of getting your land and resource back, we are going through the same thing on the Big Island with ownership of land and also the building of more telescope on Mauna kea mountain.

In most historical cases, we Europeans were the bad guys. We killed off the Tainos of the Caribbean, forced the Native Americans off their land, and now this. Hawaii has gotten so expensive now that lots of the natives are being forced to move away from their ancestral lands, or become homeless. It's basically a way of kicking indigenous people off their land when we want it. The American government builds all these monuments for Native American culture now that they already got what they wanted (even though the government guys would probably steal the land today if they didn't have it yet). When we don't have something that we want, we still take it. It's happening today.

Most of what the Europeans did was for their advancement in the country/land they went to (however, England, Spain, etc did benefit when the gold arrived). When Europeans began to leave Europe they were actually abandoning Europe. How many people refer to themselves as "Euro-canadian", or "Euro-austrailian", or "Euro-american"...? The descendants of the Europeans in the newly colonized lands were never "European" in their hearts. Those same European descendants would eventually go back to Europe and kill millions of real Europeans in the world wars and they continue to this day to contribute to the genocide of the real European people who had the balls not to immigrate and who never colonized or enslaved anyone. There is no such thing as a "European diaspora". The term "euro trash" is a product of "white" america. Even though the past and present policies of colonization within the U.S. were put forth by "whites", these "whites" don't identify themselves as Europeans. Perhaps the Natives of the lands of the Americas should do what the Europeans did when they fought the Moors, Turks, Mongols and other invaders of Europe.

@@inmyownwords9798 In my own words the truth is sin of Greed and selfishness. And that means all cultures and races. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of GOD! SINNERS need to be saved by JESUS CHRIST and he is the only one that can change people's hearts, souls, and minds. And the ones that do not have JESUS lives by the lust of the flesh and they will die in their sins. JESUS is our only hope in this wicked world.

@@deannalindsey7888 oh yeah and the facts of the case here is what white people have done & are presently doing. I'm a Bible believer myself. Jesus is the Christ, the lion of Judah. Check out the books of Obadiah and Joel to see what they say about Edom. Do you know who Edom is? It would behoove you to study it. It's absolutely amazing that we can believe on Christ and be saved. I know that I need a redeemer. Now you have a good read on Edom, here's a clue. She wants to make her home amongst the stars... quoting scripture my dear, it's in there.. one group of people fit in the category

I would work with engineers to slowly but steady open up the sources.. its really unusual to see dry land like this in a tropical region. Its disturbing to be real. Since i was a child i loved and dreamed about this region.. its folks, its way of life. I was not dreaming about u.s american culture.

We need an army or an organization that fights for the rights of the people being abused for their lack of knowledge...those in power use the excuse of progress to exile rights away from the native....I could imagine how badly things were taken from people before when there were no cameras and journalists like you to help...you are hope that we can trust media and journalists....Israel has land reclamation laws maybe Hawaii should enforce this law

Can’t the sugar plantation just build desalinization plants on the coast and use ocean water to water their crops? I’d assume that would be cheaper than years of legal fees…
