I'm from Kolkata. My grandpa lived through direct action day. Most of the violence happened in the central part of the city. there were rallies calling for jihad and death to kafirs, towards the evening bands of young Muslim boys mostly underage, took up crude arms and attacked the immigrant neighbourhood. There was retailiation after which violence spread to the rest of the city. One of the goals was to purge non-muslims from the city. It was a British army officer who ordered curfew and shoot at sight orders, which ultimately cooled the situation. Although Gandhi's fast to death gets the credit for it. One of the worst incidents that grandpa narrated was our then neighbour, a young widow, was abducted by some boys who used to play in the masjid playground and raped and then mutilated her body. After this incident there were clear demarcations in Muslim and non-muslim neighbourhood, which largely exist to this day. With non-muslim I mean all other religions hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist even Jews. We all coexist in the city. Although most Jews have left for a better life, after the communist government came.

Suharwardi and Muslim league leaders deliberately organized and orchestrated the attacks on Hindus of Nawakhali and Kolkata being Chief Minister of Bengal and Hindus in Bihar reacted by massacring Muslims of Bihar and then UP .Similarly Muslim league manipulated attacks on Hindus and Sikhs of West Punjab and KPK which was retaliated by Hindus and Sikhs of Punjab and UP resulting in massacre of Muslims of India which Muslim league wanted. The Bihari Muslims were got settled by Sindhi Leader GM Syed and not any one else. None of the Muslim League leaders even paid visit to the refugee camps of Muslims nor the area affected by the carnage manipulated by Muslim league. Curse on liars.

Nehru was never fine with the project Balkans designed by the British colonisers but Mountbatten used his wife Edwina and let me tell you that Edwina had various high profile boyfriends. C. Rajagopalachari was also pursued by Edwina and he helped winston Churchill and thus, he was made the last governor general of India. Gandhi was a mass leader but after losing diplomacy at the Lucknow pact, Gandhi lost its edge but Gandhi never accepted his failure and went to the extent of appeasing.
