Agree. (born & raised in the states). I love you're assessment of the sport. It does have a tactical, "chess" or warfare type of aspect to it, like Alexander the Great, or Hannibal, Patton, Rommel,etc. Can you recognize the opposition's weaknesses in what they're doing, and use your personnel to to best of their particular abilities to beat the opposition. I could be wrong, but I dont know how many years back 10 or 12, or if he was always this way, but in recent years, former N.E. Patriots players that went on television said Belichick would basically rip up the playbook each week and start all over fresh each week during the season. With most teams you are planning based on tendencies you see on film. How do you defeat a mad genius like that. In the '80s, a new position evolved that got the nickname the "elephant" position. An outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense that is an incredible pass rusher, but athletic enough to drop into the flat etc. in pass coverage. It developed because of Lawrence Taylor of the New York Giants, Charles Haley of the S.F.49ers & Dallas Cowboys was another that later was famous for playing the "elephant" position. Joe Gibbs of the Washington Redskins came up with a 2 tight end, 1 running back offense in the early '80s, Gibbs has said he came up that offense solely because they had to play the NY Giants twice a year and had to figure out a way to try to neutralize Lawrence Taylor (which everyone had trouble doing). It is like tactical warfare, and the adjustments made never end.

Love this. In college we started doing zone blocking we called it scooping. It evolved into my favorite blocking scheme. So many people watching that game were saying it was boring. I was loving the defensive adjustments from both teams. One of the best coaching adjustments in a Super Bowl. McVie did adjust a few years later and won a Super Bowl. But last season he’s lost to many of that dominate offensive line to retirement and they had a bad year. Philly and KC along with a few other teams have O Line units that are a joy to watch. As for Bill Bilicheck because he hasn’t found a dominate QB the people that don’t know football think he’s all washed up. They don’t know football and I’m not a Patriots fan. But I love great coaching.

Yes, they do hide plays and schemes during the season to save for absolutely needed situations. And they will also show plays/formations that they have no intention of using just to fool a later adversary for a more important game.

The real genius of Superbowl 53 was that Belichick realized Goff was an idiot (thought the sun rises in the west) --- and that the coach was reading the defense for the QB and telling him which play to run. To counter this, he had his defense not show any particular scheme up front until the 15 second mark on the play clock. That is when the QB's headset is turned off. So he waits until he can't communicate with his smart coach and exposed him.

Love the physicality of the game, but this is why I fell in love with football. Football is definitely a chess match. Not only is it an in-game thing of offense calling their plays and their formations and then defenses responding to how they do that (Patriots 6-1 front), and then the offenses responding to that response (Rams bringing in 2 tight ends), but teams also self-scout - meaning they look at their o2n tendencies, what habits they themselves have, and think about how defenses generally will deal with this tendencies and then think about how they can play against and go against those tendencies so the defense won't be able to tell what they are going to do.

This video shows why Bill Belechick when it comes to acquiring or drafting players he puts a premium on 2 things intelligence and versatility. His defensive schemes are always game specific and can changen from week to week. Bill likes players who are swiss army knives but will also take a lesser valued player that has just one specific skill which he will use by putting that playerin the one situation he would excel in, Bill's motto is always Do Your Job. If you follow the game plan and don't stay from what he asks of you the result is usually a win hence 6 rings. This is coming from a life long Pat's fan who has been priviledged to watch his entire career going back to when he was a defensive coordinator for the Giants back in the 80's

FYI...when he says "Play Action", it means to fake a running play. The Quarterback shows like he is handing the ball to the running back, but pulls it back to throw it down field. The defense is so keyed to stopping the run, that they flench forward on the "Play Action"...giving the receivers a slight advantage on that play.

@@blackblake3658 that’s fair, but I’d say those problems stem from his GM evaluations and player talent. Brady hid a lot of problems. Very rarely he gets beat situationally.

This shows why a quarterback like Peyton manning, tom brady, big ben, aaron rodgers and all of the big time names are so valuable. Brady being the best example as he has always been classified as "not the most athletic" but his ability to get to the line of scrimmage and read a defense in under 25 seconds and know exactly what they are doing in their scheme is by far the most valuable part of a team's success. He knows whhat the defense is doing so he knows where the open guy is going to be or changes the play before the snap to adjust to what the defense is showing. You often hear the term "take what the defesne gives you" and thats what makes the best quarterbacks so successful. This is also why jared goff got exposed in that superbowl. It was clear he couldn't call his own plays like the great quarterbacks can and couldn't adjust to what the defense was showing. This is also why a hurry up offense can be so deadly because it doesn't allow tge defense to sub into different packages, so if a quarterback can read the scheme and run the hurry up he is often able to just pick the defense apart and drive down the field because he doesn't allow the defesne to adjust. Basically the best quarterbacks has the ability to breakdown a defense like this gut in the video did in under 25 seconds which is crazy. Its also why you hear them pretend to snap the ball with a fake "hut" call at the line. He is trying to get the defesne to show their hand as they often disguise their packages i.e. bringing a defensivd back to the line to make it look like he is going to blitz the qb but then drops into coverage when the ball is snapped. That fake "hut" is an attempt to get that guy to show what he is actually doing prematurely so the quarterback knows where to go with the ball or call an audible (change the play) based off what he is reading from the defesne. Again this is why great quarterbacks are so important. That ability to do what this guy showed in the video in a matter of seconds and adjust/react is really unbelievable and requires hours and hours of film study and game experience and why these dudes are now worth 250 million lol. I know that was long winded but when you're able to see how technical the game really is it makes you appreciate the greats that much more.

These technical NFL videos might be too much for ("all the time"). But I think, every now-and-again including these types of videos, really helps everyone's appreciation/learning of US "football". It just looks like BIG guys standing there and trying to tackle someone. It is nice to see how much more of a chessmatch is really going on. ★I especially liked this KZbinr's use of coloured squares and red/black lines showing movement ★He stops and replays after he's explained what happened. Despite being very technical, it is still pretty easy to follow what he is explaining. ((Maybe not EVERY week - but from time-to-time, a video like this is nice/educational.))

Any defense formation named after American coin is mainly to stop the pass. If you're calling nickel you still have 2 LBs to stop the run if it doesn't end up being a passing play. A Dime you have 1 LB. A Quater is no LBs. The bigger the money the smaller and faster your defense gets.

The NFL teams are in a near constant state of adapting to new strategies/concepts and relatedly, the counter strategies. Someone has pointed out that McVay, having learned from Belichick in that SB loss, then made adjustments in scheme and personnel that allowed the win the SB in 2022! Although you can see the physicality in the game, this video shows the tremendous complexity of the game--these guys are smart--players and coaches. I understand the terminology is a little challenging with this one--maybe he provides a video where he takes some time to explain the terms throughout. For example, "play action" is when the QB fakes the hand-off to the running back to then pass, which needs to be set up by a number of successful running first, typically , in order to work.

Then other tough thing for some is different coaching trees have different words for the same thing. Like some offenses have an even/odd play holes, 1-9, or 9-1. I remember can remember back when there was no A or B gap, blitzing was called red dog. If you watch early Super Bowls the announcers say red dog. Before Stauback I think the Hail Mary was called Alley Op. Pass patterns, coverages, etc the names change. Red Zone was sometimes called the Green Zone. In fact the Red Zone name took about four years in the NFL before announcers started using it. But a lot of words came from coaches that fought in WWII and Korea like the blitz. Or who did it first like the Maryland I. I didn’t know that name so when I saw it I called it the dotted i. Till someone or I watched an old game and heard it.
@gregcable3250

Depending on the team, the complexity of the offense and the players they have, an offensive play book may have hundreds of plays and thousands of variations of those plays. Each player is expected to know the plays. However, each week the Offensive Coordinator (Coach who is head of the offense) develops with his staff a game plan customized to the team they are playing (and limited by the players who are healthy that week). In the game plan they select and practice the plays they think will be most successful, and some additional ones, but during the game they may have to create variations on those plays to adapt to how the defense is countering the plays. Players are involved in lots of film watching of other teams, lots of study, besides the practice, weight lifting, etc., and, they need the whole week also to get physically ready after the pounding they took during last week's game. It is a very tough sport.
