it should've been Vakama and Anakin. Both of them are hero turned villain and back to hero again type of characters

The General Grevious constraction figures is one of the coolest ones that came out of that line and maybe even the entire LEGO Star Wars line imo

They should've made more droid kind of buildable figures because it would feel more natural with ccbs and not uncanny like the human ones that were just creepy

I can’t take any credit for saving LEGO. I did what I could at a crusial time and learned that creativity and the right team can become the ultimate human superpower

I didn't realize how much of a role you had in the formation of LEGO Star Wars! Thank you for this illuminating look behind the scenes. I love how abstractly you think about the concept of creativity through symbolism and seeing patterns across projects. I think Lucas would agree with your ideas with his popular quote about the storytelling of Star Wars: "It's like poetry. It rhymes." ;)

I always forget this, but Lego actually released some Star Wars-technic-figures back in late 90's/early 2000's. They were really basic, but I remember they were so cool because they were big and made purely out of "old school" technic parts, in addition to use stuff like ball-sockets which were brand new at the time. I feel old lol

Star Wars and Bionicle are probably my 2 favorite franchises of all time, so I’ve always loved seeing the similarities between them, but it’s really cool to see more of how they actually inspired each other behind the scenes. It’s also really cool to see just how far back the idea of the well of time was being used for Lego. I’m guessing it probably wasn’t called the well of time back then but it’s the same concept of using your creativity to turn something into something else. The more I see examples of the well of time the more it becomes probably my favorite concept. It really makes me see creativity in a new light and inspires me to go out and be creative

I grew up with Bionicle, still have my collection. I am sitting here wondering if Lego would be brave enough to come out with "anniversary" sets of the original technic Bionicle characters. I think the demand is high enough for them. I'd love to add to my collection without breaking the bank.

I just found out about this channel yesterday and each video it feels like a very deep connection with the Bionicle Community! I remember when I was a kid and always wanted to get a Bionicle, but I wasn't able to. My family didn't had a good income but for me Bionicle gave me hope and strength to strife for the better. Now I have build everything my heart desired, a family, a house, a great job. I wish LEGO still had some old set lines in order to buy them. Is so hard to find second hand sets in eastern Europe. Thank you for your huge dedication on this perfect LEGO line that was and is Bionicle!

Lego Star Wars was the only other theme I really engaged with outside of Bionicle in my pre-teen years. I regret not buying any of the CCBS Starwars figures for missing out on the parts alone.

I always love seeing your concept art. Out of curiosity, did you also make any artwork for the Bionicle film trilogy released by Miramax, or the fourth one from Universal? I'd imagine that they would've had you as an additional creative consultant on those, like Greg Farshtey. The community also just recently found out that Mask of Light was at one point planned to be released under Walt Disney Pictures sometime during its development too, since a promotional image was found from the portfolio of a freelance artist for Walt Disney Home Video at the time. I always wondered why Disney/Miramax (Miramax was owned by Disney at the time) moved the film back to Miramax shortly before its release?

Interesting that the call was received in 1995 or 1996. 1995 being the year Kenner relaunched its Star Wars toy line so 1995 was quite a massive year for the franchise. They produced the original Star Wars Action Figures from 1978-1985 and with the 1995 relaunch Star Wars Action Figures have been available again ever since. Ironically Kenner was closed by Hasbro in 2000 which was just after LEGO Star Wars launched. So you’ve got the original toy company dying and the new one entering around the same time.

Kenner wasn’t killed by LEGO though, it was a combination of the overproduction of Star Wars Episode I toys and their Jurassic Park line tanking.

Such a cool vid on two stories I love! You know I'm actually cooking up a theory on how Destiny works in Bionicle, and honestly its a lot like Force! Protodermis seems to be the stuff of destiny, perhaps beings made from protodermis like the Toa can feel the pull of destiny itself, just like how in Star Wars, those sensitive to the Force can sense the pull of their cosmos...? Cool things to think about 😁

Very interesting stuff. I'm very curious as to how Slizer and RoboRiders connect to Bionicle, as well as their respective stories. Will you be covering this in a future video?
@MythicSuns

Christian's infinity loop is pretty much showing how Lego can be a creative platform limited only by your imagination and the imagination of Lego themselves. For Lego it was the idea that the building methods introduced in Bionicle could be applied to the Star Wars sets as well and then the same thing could happen vice versa. To me Slizer & RoboRiders are interesting because unlike Star Wars they're more predecessors to Bionicle than separate themes in that Lego pretty much shelved them before Bionicle was launched (vs Star Wars which kept on going alongside Bionicle), but because they used Lego Technic pieces it was still possible for us to build new things by combining RoboRider and Slizer pieces with Bionicle pieces.

Someone's popular (noticing the 112 unread messages). Also, you use Djay?!! 😮 Or is it a shared Mac? Sorry, I'm easily distracted, lol. Keeping to the subject of the video, I personally think Bionicle deserved to be _bigger_ than Star Wars. I know that's a bit of a lofty ambition given that Star Wars to this day is still an absolute behemoth in the world of entertainment but Bionicle managed to do something Star Wars never quite managed; it managed to be just as much about the world the story is set in as much as the characters. Don't get me wrong, everything in Star Wars is pretty memorable, but the big mysteries of the Star Wars universe usually wind up taking a backseat to the more grounded events in the story; there are moments where the big mystery surrounding "The Force" is bought up but it always seems to amount to a character developing some new abilities that they use to help defeat whichever evil army is currently taking over the galaxy. Compare this to Bionicle where there are multiple mysteries that eventually lead to a mindblowing reveal that completely changes how you see the Bionicle universe as a whole and suddenly makes everything you've known up until that big reveal seem almost insignificant.

i see this in the Nexo knights and the previous sets, chima and also Ninjago. it's weird that chima eventually lost popularity, as did Nexo knights only for Ninjago to become more popular, then the other two. it was like that with the little known sets, being, vikings, ninjas and samurai. also there was pirates, along with the raiders series of sets, rock, aqua and space. there were also sets like special agents, that lost popularity to the marvel and dc sets, only for them to be eclipsed by star wars. eventually star wars lost out to, Jurassic park, before loosing out to Lego harry potter. which ironically lost out to lord of the rings, which then lost out to, hilariously enough, Lego pirates of the Caribbean. star wars became popular again, only for the Disney princess and barbie sets to eclipse them. the irony train, has never left the station, with Lego, in that was once popular on the extreme end looses popularity only to become popular again. Lego is its own self propelled hype machine, no other toy brand does it, because their afraid Lego will end up destroying them, repeatedly. i'm stating self evident facts, because it's sad that Lego has to be the Disney of the toy world, like McDonald's is the Disney of the food industry. no one dares go up against industry giants, for fear of financial death. it's in the market trends, either ride the hype train or get run over by it.
