They didn't; they created the first doom metal album.

They started metal and doom metal, idk what you on about

As in they didn't create Heavy Metal exclusively, other bands had a part to play in that, and did, but they certainly were the world's first Doom Metal band; at least to my knowledge, that's what I am talking about.

@padruigmacrodain once again you wrong they did more stoner metal and normal metal songs they only did some doom metal songs, they are a metal band not a doom metal band and according to research and almost all people who study music, they in fact started the genre, the other bands had influence but it didn't make them metal, black sabbath took those styles and combined it to create heavy metal and doom metal

@angelobelmont9379 right here we are again; do you know how many people in the world disagree with you; quite a few more than just plain old me. I never said Sabbath were exclusively a doom metal act; I just meant their first album could be considered the world's first doom metal album. Heavy Metal was a confluence of many styles coming from those bands in the late 60's who simply wanted to get as heavy and as intense as possible. Most people agree that between Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath the line that the proto-metal Hard and Heavy Rock acts of the late 60's ( Cream, Hendrix Experience etc. ) had come up to was finally crossed and heavy metal in all its glory finally and properly began and the rest, as they say, is history. And since then the genre has divided a thousand fold over. Which personally speaking is fantastic. The richness of metal is precisely because of the complexity of its beginnings and the complexity of its evolution. When did it really begin? Who cares. I go with the three Ugly Sisters Theory ( Led Zep, Purple, Black Sabbath ) and that is enough for me and for most people and I have listened to everything from the classic era to the heaviest stuff of today. These silly arguments over trying to nail down what is precisely heavy metal just seek to divide the metal family from itself. I know of no-one my age ( 47 ) who will have trawled through overkill, testament, death and obituary etc. that won't have listened to 70's and 80's glam metal in all its glory; that is where most of us begun. In the words of Braveheart re-unite the clans; I couldn't give two hoots what Mr. PhD says.

@padruigmacrodain you make a good point, you can stick with your theory but it is a fact that black sabbath invented metal
