About the idea of DS being vague, I always thought it was because you're only a man thrown into that world. That you aren't a protagonist of that world but a secondary character and while the world is going to hell you are fighting for yourself in the background. Not sure if I'm making myself clear.

This is what makes the stories of Dark Souls imo better than the stories where one has a protagonist. You're not THE man. You're merely A man. Beating Gods. Figuring out what the fuck have these Gods and people been doing. What happened to these kingdoms, who betrayed who? You're reading a book, you're not part of the book. Or are you?

You're not a protagonist, true, but you also kinda are. You're the chosen undead. However, you're not the first. You're one out of millions of chosen undeads.You're just more determined than the others, you don't lose your head, keep going forward despite dying dozens of times. You struggle, and before you were just a hopeless undead, barely sane, and by the end of your journey you're fighting the hollowed God, Gwyn. A Hero's Journey.

More accurately, Yharnam was a surrogate mother, one who was merely the holder of the true parent/parents. Mergo is a true great one, albeit still a child. All great ones lose their child, probably due to them not being able to reach each other across the cosmos, which we as humans only access through dreams and nightmares. Great ones then try to find a human child to take the place of their actual lost child, for we are so unevolved that even as an adult we are merely children to great ones. We fill the hole they have in their lives.

I fucking love this. I never even considered analyzing the story in context of it being fully symbolic. I was thinking about the themes yesterday so it was awesome to see this. I think the primary theme is the danger of the reckless pursuit of progress in an uncaring universe. All the insight gathered were means to an end. Uninhibited medical progress destroyed Yarnham as they didn't understand what they were using. Micolash, addicted to the thrill of discovery, sold the world to understand it, in an attempt to become a god. In the old hunters dlc, horrible atrocities were committed in the name of insight. Blind, careless progress is what doomed Yarnham. We tend to assume that progress is innately good. But our attempts to evolve could easily be our undoing. There's no one to save us from ourselves. After all, we're only flies to the Gods. And what do we care of a few dead flies?

Btw The Doll is the only character in the game that bleeds with pale blood when getting hit. Not yellow, like Iosefka's or Ebrietas' blood, but white. The Doll also awakens only if you have at least 1 insight. You can not have it yet OR you can spend it all and in both cases The Doll won't be alive. The singing women in the locations of Nightmare (the ones with the brains on their heads) wear the same outfits as The Doll. It's obvious if you compare them. And the brains on their heads consist of messengers' bodies and eyes. There's clearly some creepy stuff connected to The Doll.

One of the cool things I like about dark souls and bloodborne is I'd be playing and you hear all these awesome stories of other heroes or monsters that are all so grand and epic and then I would like at my weak fragile character who seemed so small compared to the world. I'd then go to ask myself what my characters story was and I realized our characters story is the story of the end of all these other epic heroes and beast and that in itself make our characters stories one of the coolest.
@battletoads22
@battletoads22 5 жыл бұрын
Another way you could think of it is as giving realistic perspective on the stories of those heroes. In Christianity, Saints are remembered for doing amazing things and many people feel that they can't live up to their standard, but here's the catch: Saints didn't start out as Saints. They still had their own struggles, and while they may have done great things, that doesn't mean that their lives were without conflict. Similarly, in DS and BB, you do great things and can even ascend to the position of godhood or epic hero, but you do plenty of struggling along the way.

Fantastic video edgy. I'm also a writer and avid gamer so these kind of dissections fascinate me. I'm sure you've heard of it, but if you're interested in the cycles of life and death and our individual paths through them, I would recommend Joseph Campbell's hero with a thousand faces and his concept of the heros journey and the Cosmogonic cycle.

That is a fascinating book, though it surprises me that people have often recommended it to me as a guide to plot, which I have never found it particularly useful for. Strat-Edgy Productions You are good at conveying your point and a unique one at that, not that I haven't drawn the same conclusion before reading a bit deeper and I think your opinion is very right but I would add that the beast form is also adolescence into young adulthood in that you are a ravaging growing beast and will only continue that path without guidance through the wooded maze of early adulthood. My main point is that the old hunters doc not only really ties the lore up in a lot of crucial ways, Ludwig or Lawrence can be seen as becoming a full grown man facing the prospect of going from apex to withering into an older self, and Maria would be the grieving old age loss of a spouse and the clock tower with its maze of thoughts to bury the truth but also a sign of losing track of memories. Culminating into the last phase of life when you go to the hamlet with all the other old forgotten atrocities and the koz still born being uour child turned man as his monster form and placenta being a memory of who was lost and the ugliness of what remains of your last most vital relationship then off to the great beyond in death

Bravo! You've given me yet another strong view on the _deep_ ideas behind Bloodborne, and made it simultaneously more beautiful and horrifying to me. So far as I know, your theory about the game overall being about-and playing on the themes of-the cycle of life within a dream is entirely original. It's wonderfully poignant as well. Although Vaati eluded to the childbirth thing once, it was never so concise. To further reinforce your theory that the messengers are [stillborn] children, another attribute is their skull plates; they aren't yet fused together either-something I just now noticed. About two years ago I bought the two Collector's Edition guidebooks, which are great. Upon ordering them, I thought they'd contain some deep lore and give me more _insight_ (n.p.i.) about the game, but they didn't. They did/do give some excellent technical descriptions of nearly everything in the game-all of the enemies' and bosses' attributes and how best to fight them, weapons and "armor" set tech. info & lore, detailed maps of every area, etc. It's all done in great fashion too, with high-fidelity images to go along with the text. While I wouldn't want one for my first playthrough, they're excellent books for getting trophies and I highly recommend them to any die-hard Bloodborne fan. In retrospect I'm very happy that those books didn't contain what I was originally hoping for, which was an explanation from Miyazaki telling the reader what the game's all about. A precise explanation from the creator wouldn't make the game's story better in _any_ way, in fact it may wreck it in some aspects. I'd much rather us fans continue theorizing and dreaming up different ways to explain the journey that the game takes us on-which to this day 2½ years later, still wows me. As a final note, I also wanted to say that you're spot-on about how the feeling of insignificance that Bloodborne gives the player makes it more horrifying. And as you stated, it evolves throughout the game into a more & more mature insignificance. It's the polar opposite of how most games make you feel. In 99% of games I've played these days-both good and bad ones-I play the role of this person or thing that's extremely powerful, confident, and above all, feared. In Bloodborne, _you're_ the one fearing everything around you, and a "hidden" mechanic is to constantly fight-off this fear. It's incredibly scary and satisfying, and even after playing it for over 100 hours, I still get anxious and upset when I play it, especially at certain points of the game. I could go on for hours about it, but this one attribute of the game seems to make or break most people's love for it; if you can't handle the intense emotion the game provokes, you'll likely put it down before you make it to Father Gascoigne. Great job on this video my fellow wise hunter. This was positively excellent!

I really like your idea of how the game an analogy of dealing with the horrors of aging! What's even cooler is that from this perspective, Bloodborne is even more so story of overcoming those horrors! Even though the Hunter is a relatively small character in a universe controlled by cosmic abominations, we as the Hunter are able to become powerful, traverse the cosmic beyond, and shove a Saw Cleaver up the assholes of those who see humans as slaves and playthings. Although there are many things to be afraid of, those things serve as the stepping stones of the betterment and empowerment of the individual!

The orientation of bloodborne is about how the player has no control or impact over the character and world, yet they do impact the player's imagination into creating more than just absorbing. The difference between dark souls and bb in this term is that in DS the character reacts to things exactly like the player would, while in Bb the character reacts knowing what it's happening, and the player's feelings are completely left out, in order to create separation from the player's mind and the character's mind.

I’ve gotta make a correction, the Souls games and Bloodborne do have a story. Maybe not a “plot” per say, but they do have stories. Also, there’s a lot of videos that have taken hours upon hours of research to make that do deep dives into item descriptions and info given by NPCs and the visual story telling that the Soulsborne games are known for. There’s a lot of video that are “fan theories” yes, but there’s also quite a bit of videos that only use the information readily available in-game and information given by the Director himself(can spell his name but you know who I’m talking about). Anyway, the whole point was that the Dark Souls games and Bloodborne do have a story within each individual game. You just have to talk to the NPCs listen to what it is they are saying, where it is that they are when talking to them and the effect that your actions have on not just the immediate setting but also on the NPC you come into contact. There is a story there, just maybe not mucho a plot.

I love hearing other peoples thoughts on the game as I think the designers made it so people could make such drastically different perspectives. As for the music honestly I was able to disregard it and get the general idea of the video, really well done! It always suprises me seeing more high quality from smaller channels.

And the woman in white is Queen Yharnam, the Queen of the ancient Pthumerians who first discovered the greats ones and used blood to turn themselves into a race of nearly immortal super humans until they were eventually destroyed for whatever reason only to be rediscovered by the healing church, her child was the great one Mergo, you can tell because he cries throughout her entire fight.

Letting Gehrman kill you is my favorite ending because I view it as the hunter accepting that the world around them is uncontrollable chaos and just rolling with it. Over the course of the game over and over again you see people who lose both their minds and humanity in their desperate search for knowledge and power, trying to escape their impermanence. The point of lovecraftian horror is that humans aren't supposed to unravel the secrets of the universe, because we can't handle them. How long will you survive as a new Great One before some spaz with a giant spinning flaming sawblade rustles your jimmies?

I find it fascinating how many people have interpreted the meaning of Bloodborne into so many disparate themes I've heard it's about the fear of industrialization (mostly because of the victorian setting), about a Freudian need to rebel against the parent, about dealing with personal insecurities, about sheer Lovecraftian horror of actual space aliens who are infinitely greater than us, and now i've heard your opinion where it's about life and the stages of fear we go through it

Man I really love the Rom boss fight in this game. Not because of anything crazy gameplay or visual wise but because it was the first time in a game where I did something just because I felt a sense of something being down there(my first souls game btw) I had no idea that I was supposed to dive into the water but after some exploring and standing around looking at the moon with the old man dying behind me it was the last thing I felt needed to be done. For me to end it all and so I dove into the cold dark water

I think the "eyes on the inside" thing has a much simpler metaphor: it stands for self-awareness. The ability to look inward and objectively codify one's thoughts, feelings, and actions. You cannot move beyond beastly idiocy until you can grasp the root causes of one's cognitive decisions. Such as when one is brought into a rage, and then can stop and ask, "Why am I angry? Is this response reasonable? Is lashing out really productive?" There's that famous Lovecraft quote. That the greatest mercy is that the human mind cannot catalog all of its contents. In another quote, that humanity will reject the horrors that come from science, and flee to the safety of a new dark age. If a human would cease to be a beast - and, by extension, cease to be a human - they must go beyond action that lacks self-reflection. To really see oneself - to reject ignorance or the comfort of a dark age - is to become something more than human. To ascend, know thyself.

I saw the bloated head enemies as less about child deformity and more about how it is actually the size of our brains and large skulls that were the leading cause of mother and infant mortalities during childbirth. A sense that our cognitive prowess literally killed us for the majority of human history; knowledge to be feared.

I assumed Dark Souls is about religion losing its power (fading light = loss of faith to a god or sth) and the transition to an age of man (without light), while letting us choose which path is better.

Damn, you made me re-think the Mensis Head Cages. They died during a ritual, because they craved knowledge, but rejected the accompanied change. Thus their normal minds received the knowledge, without filling out with eyes on the inside, thus overfilling and killing their brains. Random thoughts.

While my interpretation of this game was very different from yours, I thought your interpretation was awesome because not only was it unique it had many inngame thematic elements giving it credence. My interpretation was dual focused around mankind's history of reacting violently to things that threaten them or are unknown often to horrific results with a secondary theme of existensional dread. You nailed it on the the head that the thing that makes bloodborne's story so great is the way you have to peice it together yourself while the developer's leave bits of lore, themes, and story plots that give direction but are still open to interpretation.

Not really sure at times if you're talking about story (what's happening to the player) or the lore (how the world is). If you still haven't watched any lore videos, I think you should because they give a really solid and comprehensive perspective of the big picture and smaller details in a very specific way.

I could go on and on and on and talk so much about I why I love the soulsborn series more specifically about how I love bloodborne with a burning passion but I’m not cause I already did it and it took a while but something I love so much about Bloodborne and this extends to Dark souls is how we all have our story our interactions in completely different sequences and how we all have a different understanding about the story we all have our interpretation for BB and none of it is true mostly cause the lore is so rich and deep but we aren’t told what we are why we should do this or that or our motivation or what is our place for example I believe in BB I’m just someone in the background doing my own thing surviving during the hunt while there’s tons of other things happening outside my reach and I have my own interpretation of the story from the environmental clues and all the text I’ve read on armor and weapons and almost every item I don’t mean to diss last of us I really enjoyed it ( really enjoyed it ) but it’s the same game for everyone it’s the exact same way it’s a linear path you go here talk a lil kill a couple of ppl watch a cutscene and a sequence of set pieces activates soulsborne doesn’t have and that’s one of the many reasons I adore this game/series ( not talking about none from soft soulsborne clones I really don’t think they’re good they don’t have anywhere near the charm the from soft soulsborne does )

OBJECTION! the Person that makes Josefkas Blood Vial that you get in the beginning, is not the same that makes the Celestial Emmesaties is not the same person! She gets killed and an imposter takes her place. Also The Nightmare of Mensis is NAmed after the School of Mensis, which itself is named after the Moon, as "Mensis" is latin for "Month" . All of it is a reference to the Moon Presence that the School of Mensis was researching.

I always considered Dark Souls to be a story of no purpose into being given reason to be and to do and without that you have no reason to be and fade into nothing (to go hollow for example). Bloodborne on the other hand is the opposite, to dream and have purpose but not to be consumed by it or to overindulge lest you forget the bigger picture. You can have an insight of brilliance and a primal goal or desire but you need a way to couple both in a way where neither lose sight of the other and can eventually transcend higher or escape from them before we are trapped in either.

I believe the soulsborne series are always up to your own interpretation, that there isn't one true story as in other games, and I love your idea that it's about growing up, but at the same time so much of your information is wrong or missing a part. The bleeding woman is Queen Yharnam, the glowing light in the Nightmare of Mensis is the Brain of Mensis, Micholash doesn't say much to you in his boss fight (he's praying). Ultimately I'm split between being fascinated by how much evidence there is that the different stages are based on childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age, and feeling like a lot of your points are wrong. But I guess that's the point of Cosmic Horror, we'll never know it all and can only see fractions of portions of the whole story.

Intersting theory but I'm not sure if it holds up. Micolash is asking for ascension from Kos, or some say Kosm, an outer god. That's what happened with Rom would ascended into a celestial being.
