The hundreds of millions poured into Formula One by BMW in the 2000's resulted in no driver or constructor wins, but from it came a foundry built for light-alloy castings with maximum precision, an in-house electronics department containing a prototype production facility, and a team of engineers at their disposal. This would lay the groundwork for a new project to bring F1 engineering into a road car and thus the S85 was born!

6:02 how is it that the P80 that produces 880 HP only has a max torque output of 350Nm? Can someone please explain how this works?

Tiny cylinder stroke compared to cylinder bore. It takes a long stroke to make torque.

because it spins at 18000rpm. take 350nm (or thereabouts) at 18000rpm and attach it to a gearbox with a comically low ratio, and the wheels will be spinning at normal car speeds but with a massive amount of torque. roughly, the same amount of torque as a car that produces 880hp/700nm at 9000rpm with a gearbox with twice the gear ratio. this is why people say "torque isn't important".

The biggest downfall of the s85 are the people who don't understand how to maintain them. It is an engineering masterpiece that will not tolerate deferred maintenance. You cannot in good faith complain that the engine is too expensive to maintain when it is a bespoke unit. This is one of the greatest road engines ever produced.

A lot of misconception out there. The motor is actual very reliable, especially for its NA power output. It’s a race inspired engine that requires preventative maintenance as such. People treated them as rough daily drivers, didn’t let the oil get up to temp, and waited for stuff to break. That might be okay in a Toyota, but in a 5.0L high revving V10, not so much.
