I am so happy to have learned that the CBC is part 2 of the CBSC (also known as title 24). I had thought that title 24 was a complete seperate entity of the CBC, and now I know that the CBSC is still at state level as well. I also love that you mentioned how all pf the chapters are a progression of each other and that the best way to practice in our industr is to know HOW to find the codes that pertain to you as opposed to learning the entire code because it gets updated every 3 years anyway. Finally, I appreciate the mention of all the chapters and what they pertian to. There is a lot of fire safety going on in the CBC, maybe because we are particularly prone to wildfires and such wince we are a chaperal climate and close to desert climates as well, so we likely have the need for stringent fire proteciton.
@architectprepcourse4 ай бұрын
In CA, we have the CA Fire Code (CFC) which is Part 9 of Title 24. You're absolutely right about wildfires in CA as a big hazard. The code does reflect amendments for stringent requirements in those chapters and then at the local level, many authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) will have even more potentially stringent requirements. The Office of the State Fire Marshal also has a big say on fire laws here in CA which the local AHJs must follow!

One point that resonated with me in the video is the complexity and constant evolution of building codes in architecture. Navigating these codes is crucial for ensuring that buildings are safe, functional, and compliant. While some may find this aspect of architecture tedious, it is an essential part of the design process that ensures the integrity and safety of the structures we create. The video underscores the importance of this often overlooked but vital component of architectural design.

This video really helps me understand the difference between the regulation codes and the way the codes are used where different architects use some codes more than others while also using the strictest code to ensure the safety of people and is also a guide to specify the material, height, and requirement base on the building that is being built. The old building or one that was not constructed during the current regulation code is updated if it goes under construction.

Understanding the difference within different types of structures is integral in understanding building codes. Residential, commercial, special use, and more all have unique building codes that must be adhered to in order to have the closest thing to a guarantee for life safety. I especially find the operation of stadiums unique. They house tens of thousands of people simultaneously and must have extremely regulated procedures. All structures mention above have even deeper definitions and all take into account important factors such as fire resistance, occupancy limit, and materiality.

I find the organization of chapters and how each builds from the other to meet all building safety conditions very intriguing. I live in an area where fires are common and have impacted my family personally in the past where we had to evacuate for a week because of the dangers but because of the codes like 1hr rated walls and other things placed by code the likelihood of our safety was much greater and our home did not burn down. 1) CBSC the California Building Standards Commission is the agency that regulates Title 24. 2) Part two of Title 24 is the California Building Code which is divided into two parts to help guide building professionals, engineers, architects, and more; helping them to apply codes. 3) The California Code of Regulations has 28 total titles.

The most important point that resonated with me in the second video is the CBC Chapter 2 definitions. It clarifies the important definitions in the building code so people could be on the same page when it comes to building code. It makes me think that if there are misunderstandings between people even though they are speaking about the same thing but different words, it could possibly bring a huge disaster in the construction. I definitely think this is one of the most important things when we learn codes and use them in the future to avoid misunderstandings.

A topic that resonated with me from the video is the CBC specifically CBC chapter 7 and 9. as my first time learning about building codes I found it very interesting that there are two different chapters needed to specify the required fire resistance of the materials and a building as a whole. Chapter 7 talks about passive fire resistance systems and provides a detailed description of how the elements are constructed while chapter 9 deals with the same topic it focuses more on the minimum requirements for active fire protection systems. To me this just shows how important and detailed the building codes are which I have found very interesting.

This video answered a long standing question I had about building codes and how it applies to older buildings. To my understanding it seems that in the event of a remodel regardless of when the building was constructed the final product of the remodel b=must adhere to the most current buildings codes. It also seems that older buildings do not have to be routinely updated to the most modern codes if it is to remain untouched (similarly to vintage automobiles not having to be updated to the most modern safety features). However there might be outlying circumstances with regard to retrofitting that I'm not yet aware of.

CBC Ch. 10 is probably one of the more interesting chapters to me at the moment since we were introduced to these not too long ago. Access to more than one safety exit that is safe to traverse as well as being one of the only parts of the building that is fireproof is important for obvious reasons. This one is more interesting to me since it typically has a huge influence on design (which we all learned the hard way the past 2 semesters), and it has little to no design freedom. Implementing this chapter has proved to be a struggle in my design process and it is only the beginning as we learn more intensive codes.

As much as it might seem to be excessive to have a different California set of codes, it actually makes a lot of sense. Most countries would also follow the International Building Code and set up a set of codes for the entire country. The US is not able to do that because it's almost as large as an entire continent, and it covers many different kinds of weathers and habitats, making it differ highly from California to New York. I like how the codes are structured in a way to so that the anatomy of a building all comes together based on its use and purpose. I find the different types of construction intriguing as buildings can have all of these preventative measures, such as materials and their time in hours they can be set aflame until they lose their structural integrity. Earlier it was mentioned how chapter 6 ties into the types of passive fire-resistant systems, which then can be related to chapter 3 and its use and occupancy. Such as the example of how a stadium will have different measures taken for life safety than a small retail store, I like how in buildings no matter what the size, use, or design of it, the CBC chapters work with each other to bring a sort of set rules that will always be applied to every building to ensure safe operations.

I've had some experience looking at the CODES online and I was overwhelmed by how many there are, It was interesting to find out not only there is code for specific scenarios but that they are related to each other. By far, I've noticed that the Ch11A & 11B ACCESSIBILITY CHAPTERS are kind of the most used and applied to in every chapter, thus for safely and accessibility for all. Lastly, I now start to understand why there is a lot the code regulations used in a five types of construction.

The video effectively highlights the importance of understanding building codes, which are often seen as a dry but necessary part of architectural practice. It's commendable that it breaks down complex topics into digestible sections, making it easier for viewers to grasp the fundamentals of designing to code. However, it would be beneficial to know more about how these codes are updated and enforced in practice. Additionally, how do architects balance creativity with the strict adherence to building codes, especially when innovative designs may challenge conventional standards?

One point that resonated with me is how it not important to memorize the building code as the important thing is to go back to building codes to make sure what's required and exceed the minimum requirements to ensure the safety. One question that I had was when the CBSC and IBC gets updated triennially what is mainly altered and revised? I want to know what codes stays the same and what gets revised to further understand what causes it be revised.
@architectprepcourse4 ай бұрын
Every update, the organizations publish code amendments online and also incorporate them in a different color in the digital codes. If you search IBC 2024 on Upcodes. It will show amendments in red, spread out throughout the code.

This video emphasizes the importance of building codes by reminding us of their fundamental purpose and asking the "why" question. Although some may view them as a nuisance, codes are implemented for critical safety reasons. I especially appreciate how you provided examples of codes within the CBC and explained how they work together progressively to guide builders. It describes key chapters, such as building use, occupancy, special requirements, and fire safety, highlighting the necessity of understanding their order and content for effective application.

One thing that stood out to me was the topic and use of Chapter 3 in the CBC. Use and occupancy being one of the first chapters is an obvious occurrence, seeing how important those things are. However, the interesting part was that this section is considered the "who, what, when, and why" section and that is just so charming to me. It is truly the basics of the basics, and it's in the beginning of the book because it's so easy to overlook these things when wanting to design something beautiful (but maybe not functional.) It also reminded me of when I first learned how to read/write, the basics being exactly the same and asking me to identify the who, the what and the why of a story. It reinforces that the reason we build is for people, which in turn reinforces the importance of codes.

One point that resonated with me was the emphasis on understanding the definitions provided in Chapter 2 of the California Building Code. This chapter is foundational because it clarifies key terms used throughout the code, which is essential for accurate interpretation and application. Without a clear understanding of these definitions, professionals might misinterpret regulations or apply them incorrectly, potentially compromising safety and compliance. This highlights the critical need for architects and engineers to not only familiarize themselves with the full breadth of the code but also to grasp its precise language and terminology to ensure that every aspect of their projects adheres to legal and safety standards.

I agree with your sentiment that Chapter 2 of the California Building Code is an important fundamental tool. Creating a language to be used when referring to building codes builds a cohesive environment where the language is definitive and doesn’t leave room for interpretation. Many problems come when comparing architectural and engineer drawings is discrepancies in scale and other things that are different. Building codes are important for our safety and by building this language to avoid misinterpretation is very important.
@katelynguyen77464 ай бұрын
I agree that the definitions are essential in providing clarity through the code. If definitions are left to interpretation there is room for loopholes in the code, which leads to error. The definitions tighten the restrictions in the code, and leave less room for interpretive creativity.

I was actually quite surprised by how in depth every chapter delves into very minute details of buildings as well as how almost every chapter refrences other chpaters in the book. This means that in order for something to be up to code there must be a sort of harmony that happens throughout the various chapters in the book of codes. This may begin to seem frustrating and sometimes unecessary, but this exact coordination between all the factors, requirements, and safety features that revolve around the creation of a modern building. The extensive detail provide might seem tedious, but at the end of the day it is there to provide a safe guideline as to where all buildings can be held to a uniform safety status.

1. CBSC is actually the whole title 24 while CBC is just part 2 which is interesting to know as the fact that they had 2 different names, implied that they were completely different from each other. 2. The summary of all the chapters showed how the sequence of the chapters does matter and how they were purposefully organized as they somewhat built off of the other and climbed all the way to the finishing of a building. It is set up in a way where you can start off with the codes that simplify when you start your process of designing a building.
