What does Putin mean by denazification of Ukraine? “The Russians did the same thing in Bulgaria after the Second World War; they murdered thousands of dissidents, professors and priests,” says Assen Wassilew. (Bulgarian Finance Minister)

putin is just making up various excuses for his disastrous invasion of Ukraine. Everyone knows that the truth is that putin just wants to try to rebuild the USSR, or even worse - the old russian empire. He doesn’t understand history at all, even though he attempts to teach his version of it to carlton tucker’s audience. What putin really doesn’t get is that the age of empires and empire building is clearly a thing of the past, ended by World War I. We will never have empires like those ever again, and that is a very GOOD thing. I am glad we won’t…

Our relationships with Russia are complex. It is true that we gained our independence back in 1878 because of the Russian-Ottoman war and many Russians gave their lives, believing they were fighting for our freedom (we are still honouring their memory to this very day!), but it is also true that afterwards their diplomacy was constantly working against our national interests. Not only that, but they even attacked us in WW1 and occupied us in WW2, killing our most intelligent and bright people. Still, there are may people in Bulgaria who can't seem to differentiate Russian culture (Slavic language and alphabet, Orthodox Christianity, literature, music, art, etc) - all Bulgarians are very fond of it, from Russian imperialism in the face of Russian tzars, then Lenin, Stalin and now Putin. This war is especially painful for us, Bulgarians, because we gave to Kievan Russ an alphabet and it's first pieces of literature, we set the cultural foundation of Kievan Russ back in the Middle Ages, and today's Russia and Ukraine are both descendants of this medieval state. So we are striving for peace between two nations very close to our hearts, but justified peace - Russia has to leave Ukraine alone and pay full reparations for the inflicted damage.

Re >Our relationships with Russia are complex. (....) occupied us in WW2, killing our most intelligent and bright people.< Well, Bulgaria signed the Tripartite Pact (March 1941) and became part of The Axis powers (Nazi Germany side of the WWII). Soviet's occupation was rather short and Bulgaria didn't even fight against them. The "funny" part is that USSR started the WWII as Germany's ally. And only after Hitler's attack (June 1941) they switched the side.
@LNLBD
@LNLBD 2 ай бұрын
@@tjblues01 We were forced to sign the Pact (the alternative was a full scale war with the Germans), but we never declared war on the USSR nor we have sent troops to the Eastern front. Not only that, but when the USSR declared war on Bulgaria, by that time we were already in war with the Germans (a war in which we gave more than 30 000 casualties). The Soviet occupation lasted from 1944 until 1947. In those three years Bulgarian intellectuals were slaughtered or sent to concentration camps, our economy was destroyed and we were denied the opportunity to receive help from the Marshall plan.

@@LNLBD Re >We were forced to sign the Pact (the alternative was a full scale war with the Germans)< Do you really think it's a good explanation / excuse? From historical perspective I see it as a result of greed to regain lost territories (Balkan wars / WWI) with support of German power. Sure, you didn't fight against USSR but for ex. you had no problem with occupying part of Greece. In those days nationalism and antisemitism were very strong in many countries. Bulgaria was not an exception. You jumped on the same bandwagon with Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Croatia. Saying that you were forced to do so is a BS excuse. >USSR declared war on Bulgaria, < Yeap. Stalin was PoS. He did similar thing with Japan... >we were already in war with the Germans (a war in which we gave more than 30 000 casualties).< IDK about details but we are talking about period of few days! Which were mostly political charades with goal of saving their own asses. >The Soviet occupation lasted from 1944 until 1947. In those three years Bulgarian intellectuals were slaughtered or sent to concentration camps, < Just like in EVERY country under Soviets after WWII. Which should not surprise anyone as you lost the war... Switching sides few days before the end was kind of pathetic... In contrast you can look at Poland; They chose fight against 2 superpowers of those days: Germany and Soviets. They never changed sides. They lost 6 million people. And after war they got FU hard by USSR and Allies.

@@tjblues01 To be honest, I can't see the point you are trying to make. Are you trying to justify Kremlin aggression against Bulgaria? Because that aggression started in 1881, when they organised the overthrowing of our legal government, and this was long before WW2. Regarding your comparison between Poland and Bulgaria in WW2, let me reming you that Poland was backed up by Great Britain and France, while Bulgaria was all alone and isolated. Tzar Boris had two options - war against Germany, many casualties and further territorial losses, or a treaty with Germany and restoration of the majority of the ethnically Bulgarian lands (internationally recognised as such with the Constantinople Conference from 1876-77). His choice is debatable today, but during that time it looked reasonable. Also, let me remind you that we managed to save many of our Jews (not all, I admit, but we did the best we could and better than the Poles for sure).

My advice is to read more about the relations between Bulgaria and Russia after the end of the Russo-Turkish war. It is very interesting and while the Bulgarian nation is thankful for the sacrifices that the Russian empire made for our liberation, we can't keep a blind eye that Russia didn't do it for us but for themselves. After Bulgaria is liberated thanks to the Russian contributions, there is a rise of rusophobia in the country and it gets divided into russophiles and russophobes. A division that stands till today. Another important point is that Russia didn't back up Bulgaria after the historical events of the Russo-Turkish war, on a contrary - Russia played a major role into the division of Bulgaria into 2 - Principality Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia WHICH was given back to the Ottoman Empire. This is seen as a betrayal of Bulgaria from Russia. Not only, this decision eas heavilly critisized in the Russian empire too. Another historical fact is that Russia started to help Serbia more. Especially during the Serbo-Bulgarian war which happened after the unification of the said Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia. Fun fact : the national anthem of Bulgaria was composed during that war and is basically a big middle finger to Serbia. Another important fact is that in WW2 even if Bulgaria was on teh side of Germany, it didn't declare a war on the Soviet Union but the Soviet Union invaded Bulgaria and killed all of it's intelligence and forced communism into the country. Later when Bulgaria got rid of communism in 1989 and decided to take the NATO+EU way the Russian Federation started to make propaganda that we're ungrateful to them. This propaganda is still happening. Mostly by the so called "Russian trolls" who go and spam every comment section with propaganda comments. I am grateful that I grew up and live in Bulgaria and I call it my home. Bulgaria forever!

After 1919 Bulgaria was in state of limbo ,IMRO was declared illegal, communist, social uprisings, military uprising, suspension of the constitution, assastion and political usurpation. Most of the people who got executed and the one who end up in jail are part of the elite who helped Bulgaria to side with Germany during both world war's. There was some who fled as my family to Yugoslavia just on bases been in Imro and being hated by then communist regime. We lost most of our educated people during the first world war till 1972 Bulgaria was not in any position economically or educationally close even to the levels of before 1912. We are ungrateful to extend till 1986 Bulgaria was buying oil and natural gas on bellow market prices and illegally exporting it to Turkey and Greece. We had deal of goods for armaments and heavy industry equipment to very much one sided .The person who cut off this deals was Gorbachev this is the reason old communist in Bulgaria didn't like him but yes we are ungrateful 30 year's of cheap energy.... About Unification thing again Austria was the one treating us with war if we close Pirot and move towards Belgrade not Russia...

From the stage of tiny Principality of Muscovy many ethnic groups and nations were absorbed into the Russian empire. The Russian population also increased through assimilation of those ethnic groups and mostly they were the ones to shed blood for the expand of the empire. Russian goal was not to "free" the Balkans, but to occupy it and then conquer Istanbul, in order to gain legitimacy for what Peter the Great dreamed to be the 3rd Rome.

I don't blame Bulgaria. It's a small country with a rapidly aging and declining population. And in the past it chose alliances with loosing factions, WW1 and WW2 were bad for Bulgaria. The invading Slavic Brothers did little to improve Bulgaria. They instead, turned Bulgaria into a defense sector against Greek NATO and Turkey NATO and a cheap place for large, inefficient, centrally planned command economy heavy industry for Russian consumption as well as a source of food for Russians in case of Russian (Stalin) mismanagement and crop failures, which happened a lot. So Bulgaria was a future war zone far from Russian lands and a cheap and controlled labor pool and a cheap source of food grains. And Bulgaria got CHEAP Russian Gas. Sort of like what Germany got in that deal after Putin replaced Yeltsin.

Great speaker. Gentleman's suit constructive and respectful tip: A pocket square should never match one's tie. It's cartoonish, cheap looking, and makes one look like a rube. Origin: The matching polyester tie and pocket square combos sold in low tier stores, to the uninformed, but well meaning. On par with monogramed French Cuffs, or square toed "dress" shoes.

The material of the tie/pocket square combo matters not Related, even for suits Poly-wool combo is absolutely fine if on a budget, so long as it fits well, and is tailored properly. ...a tie matching one's pocket square is almost as rubish as wearing white athletic socks with a navy suit and dress shoes. @r66 As Mr Miyagi said in "Karate Kid" ...Karate do, or Karate don't Meaning, if one chooses to wear a suit, wear it well, or not at all ....or, be viewed as a fool, or if very lucky, ul have a buddy, wife, co-worker etc, tell you.

Sure, you can stay at the Russian Resorts in Pomorie and elsewhere. But the Bulgarians go on holiday to the Turkish coast because of the collapse of the Turkish Lira. The Bulgarians still work in the Russian Hotels and Resorts, and still get a pretty paltry wage when compared to almost anywhere else in the EU. So how has Bulgaria "Joined the EU"? It' still resists the full implementation of the necessary protocols for final EU membership. It still has it's Lev instead of adopting the common EURO currency. Bulgaria wants to the best of both worlds without having to pay any real price to either. But how long can a country be part of two opposing political, economic and military factions? Not long.

I don't know why everyone is all excited. Yes Bulgaria has finally come around to the fact that Russia doesn't have the military might that everyone believed they had but I didn't hear the Member of Parliament of Bulgaria Daniel Mitov say that the government of Bulgaria will help Ukraine with money, weapons or humanitarian aid. He says the West, well the west is already involved and we owe a big Thank You to Germany and other countries for filling the void while the US does a bit of housekeeping in our own government. The next news report from UATV, I hope, says the US passed the Bill providing aid to Ukraine. Perhaps I will be able to say to Bulgaria welcome to the Hell Fire Club.

Duplicity is the name of the game here. Mr Mitov’s party leader and 3 times PM Boyko Borisov had always served the KGB linked Bulgarian secret services and oligarchs. He maintained near total dependency on Russian gas, oil, nuclear materials, and stalled alternative links to Greece and Turkey. Lukoil refinery in BG was allowed to pay no taxes for decades, the company’s port had no Bulgarian control of any sort and it is a public secret that Russians own enormous amount of business with Bulgarian frontmen as owners. Yes, they support Ukraine in theory but every day attack the minority government of a new Change Party who actually did send weapons, diesel, food, housed refugees and stood by Ukraine in every possible way. Boyko Borrisov is trying to block them again with constant demands and criticism. I hope the West keeps up the pressure on Mitov’s party or Bulgaria will become a grey zone again, saying the right things but doing little in practice, while waiting for the tide to turn….

Normal people in Bulgaria , didn't want to take part in all of this theatre. They wanted Bulgaria to stay neutral. The real truth is this. You can ask the people from smaller towns and villages , they all share the same opinion. But because of our politicians who don't care about us we will send money and weapons to Ukraine. All of this I think is BS. Bulgaria had to stay with good relations with Russia , as they are our friends ! 🇷🇺🇧🇬

The majority of Bulgarians didn't change the prospective of Russia. We thankful to the 150 000 Russian empire soldiers who died for our liberation but not agree with both the current Ukrainian government and Putin's Russia. I want to ask what happen to our Bulgarian minority in Ukraine ,why our monuments and language are not respected on the same level as the polish and the Hungarian minorities. I been in Ukraine in 1985-1986 and in 2014 can say anything positive on my most recent visit good people but corrupt government. The only people who support you in Bulgaria are people in power and small vocal minority, the silent majority is more worried with daily life and surviving and praying we don't get involved further in this war. Europe have no recourses and stomach to fight a long war in Ukraine with Russia after 1992 most countries spend less and less on armament and forced countries from Warsaw pact to destroy or sell their own surpluses which now leads to Bulgaria having no aviation and just 20 000 military personal. Not sure what support Ukrainians expect most of shell and ammunition production depends on China and Russia . China is reducing the supply of cotton for military's use and chemicals which will lead to big shortages for EU in particular.... The only way out is peace but I don't see Russia and US agreeing on anything at least to 2025.
