How can Hawaii's volcanoes prepare us for life on mars?

The search for extraterrestrial life often deals only with planets and galaxies light years away.
But how do we even recognize this life - if we ever find it?
A group of experienced scientists led by Diana Northup are using Hawaii's unique lava caves to explore how new life can evolve in completely alien environments.
In the process, they are venturing into newly formed cave systems that no human has ever entered before.
