I converted a walmart MTB into an EMTB with a rear hub 1000w kit and a 48v 14AH battery. I did it because an e-bike has all the benefits of getting around town fast, with none of the expense drawbacks of requiring licenses, registrations, and insurance.

Solid tips. E-bikes got me bike commuting in 2017. Detroit. Maybe similarly bad infrastructure but less traffic vs LA. Generally 30-35 miles round trip which I do on Class 1 and Class 3 bikes. Lost 10 pounds the first season and have maintained weight since. Approx 50 days and 2,000 miles per year are now by e-bike rather than auto.

Awesome video. Went from car and transit commuting to e-bike, 40 miles a day. Riese & Müller Supercharger HS. Takes some stubborness to do it in rain and freezing temps but so far the two daily rides always makes me feel so good so it's worth it.

Great video. I electrified my old mountain bike back in October last year. I was already riding some days, but I live on the top of a bunch of hills around Wellington (800m climb), NZ, so my unpowered ride into work (10KM) was about 25-30 minutes, my ride home was 45-50. If there was a headwind home, I just left my bike at work and took the bus. Since electrifying I,ve done over 1300KM, and I love it, and ride nearly every day that I can! Luckily most of my ride into the city is on shared paths, except for the last KM or so at either end, but under power my ride in is 17-20 minutes, my ride home is 20-25 minutes. In rush traffic, my drive in would be 40minutes plus each way and I'd still have to find time to go to the gym 8) One thing I would say is that if the main commute is in gridlocked or very slow traffic, it actually feels safer, because I'm moving faster than the cars. Its different if I ride in the weekend, then the traffic passing me feels very fast.

I wonder how much it is to electrify my 10 yr old bike?
@TheChromeRonin2 жыл бұрын
@@Liefpj A basic centre drive kit will set you back about NZ$2000, a hub kit might be cheaper. But make sure your 10 year old bike has good good brakes (At least disks) and at least a mountain bike style frame for strength.

I now live in ABQ. My commute is 6 miles down from 12 mile one way. I got a belt drive and internal gear hubs. I love it. I still use a bluetooth speaker and I use Google Maps for routes. A great rule of thumb is 3-4 times a week. I don't own a car and used a motorscooter, or motorcycle as my alternative. I haven't owned a car since 2005.

Yes, I started commuting by ebike last year. I live in Denver so I commute in the cold, but not in the snow or ice. Yes, some LBS won't service bikes if you don't buy from them. I've found that Mobile Bicycle Repair services can fill your service needs. Since more bicycle companies are Direct to Consumer this maybe the route to go if you need to get your bicycle built and serviced. This has worked for me and the rates are very competitive. They have come to my work and home to service my ebike. The more you ride the better your commute will be. I use a bluetooth speaker to have some music on my ride. My commute is are mixed on a MUS and on the road. You can look me up on youtube and see my commute.

I appreciate the 411 of LA biking. You had shared a few valuable tips that I did not know. I have parked my car since 11/19. The only time when I have driven since a car since than is when I need to go some where with a passenger. I try to ride my e-bikes at least a 100 plus miles a week. At one point in your video, you had touched upon establishing a relationship with a local bakeshop. I had purchased two used e-bikes. One a mountain bike and the other a road bike. Both bikes were originally purchased from Fly Rides. When I called the shop for basic support questions such as could I buy a derailleur hanger, LA Fly Rides could not sell or let me know where to make my own purchase. I would like to think that this is a one time episode, however I was disappointed. BTW I did get a derailleur hanger from Amazon.

A tip from a Scooter Rider from Sydney: if you commute using push bike at night try investing in a vest that has built in rechargeable led lights. 4 to 6 RED led at the back and same amount of white led at the front. I bought some from Amazon US and shipped back here in Sydney. Trust me you will look like X mass tree but people will pay attention. because people always pay attention if they see something out of the ordinary. So be weird, be seen and happy cycling....... Cheers

It sucks that you guys have such terrible bike infrastructure, hope the government resolves that soon. I'm in Western Australia and the bike network here is amazing. I've just started doing an eBike commute to work 30km each way (18miles) and maybe 98% is dedicated bike paths or shared paths. At no point am I on roads with traffic. The government here is continuously improving the network and businesses generally have bike store rooms, charging and shower facilities. Every modern city should be like this.

Hi. Just came across your video. I would like to start on getting my own bike but not sure what to get. I want to use it for work on a daily basis riding the bus and the ebike combined. I live in San Clemente CA and it’s kinda hard to commute as to where I live because of the uphill and downhill parts to walk to before I get to the bus stop which is very tiring. I would love to hear from you for any suggestions or tips on what specific ebike to get. Thank you!.
@gradypicinich24043 жыл бұрын
Awesome info. Quick question - what do you think is a reasonable upper limit for ebike commuting in terms of time/distance? I live ~20 minutes from the lab I work at, and my commute via car is ~30 min (22.8 mi) when traffic is clear. Google Maps tells me that with a conventional/acoustic bike, I'd be looking at 1 hr 45 min (19.9 mi), and it's been my experience with ebikes that those estimates can be reduced quite a bit.

From a Dutch perspective: So sad you buy a class 3 Ebike bike just to outrun motorised traffic. Note: I refuse to call it "keep up" with traffic when cyclists are forced to behave like motorised vehicles. On the flip side: Great to see more and more videos about commuter cycling in the USA.
