Recently discovered this on Netflix. While I so wanted for Gwendolen and Daniel to end up together, it is understandable that he would choose Mirah. I could feel Daniel slowly resolving his conflicted thoughts/feelings as he became more exposed to Gwendolen’s character. She was just all me, me, me. And when he discovered his true ancestry, that was just the last nail in the coffin. Anyway, thank you for this wonderful video. Loved the line by Sir Hugo. I suppose I shall just console myself by believing that Gwendolen was the love of Daniel’s life. He certainly was hers.

In the original book, Daniel has no romantic feelings for Gwendolen at all. The reader is not in doubt that he will in the end marry Mirah.

I have the same sentiments as you. I so wanted Gwendolen and Daniel to end up together. One can understand Gwendolen's situation as during that time, women rely so much in men at that era that they can hardly think about their own happiness. To think that she had to give up her happiness in order to help her family so that they would not live a life of hardships and misery, who can blame her for being a bit selfish? Like everyone else, we also have that hunger, the hunger for an alternative and the refusal and the refusal to accept a life of unhappiness. So, I still feel bad for Gwendolen. As for Daniel, marrying a divorced woman or a woman with an attached scandal in her reputation would also make it difficult for him in his business or career. In a way, he also had to give up the one he loved for the sake of duty to his family and their reputation. I love the video though because it does suit the flow of the music.

A popular debate actually. From a literary standpoint, the love is not returned from Daniel so it is unrequited. But, we present a theory in this video that argues that while he never said anything, it is possible he loved Gwendolen in return, so in fact the love is unfulfilled. SO was Gwendolen's love returned or did he love Mirah? It's a common debate.
