Manchester United’s need for a sporting director has been an issue since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
Ferguson’s involvement in club life was so complete and his influence over the various departments was so profound, that his departure was always likely to necessitate a structural redesign and create areas of obvious weakness.

Very well said. Do you know that there were elements of their jobs that crossed over as Fergie did more than just simply coach and manage and Gill did more than just look after recruitment? This was agreed between the two of them and was not something written into a contract so it isn't defined as part of the job role. Also at board level there was change. So even if Manchester United had of appointed a direct replacement for David Gill when they hired David Moyes there would still had been a gap where things weren't being done. I'm not sure why Alex Ferguson hasn't spoken on this. It's not only the people who were needed but also the jobs being done, we are missing both. We are missing key people but there are gaps in the key processes. So when people talk about a Director of Football because it's in fashion. I always wonder why noone is saying we need a David Gill. We didn't have a Director of Football before because we had both Gill and Fergie collaborating and going above and beyond their jobs when doing so. So people say things like we can't rely on a manager like we did with Fergie so we need a Director of Football. All the while failing to take into consideration that we already had a better formula. We don't need a Director of Football we need our original structure with its necessary people back.

Louis van gal said it in an interview that Manchester United doesn’t have people interested in football
@ingsve
@ingsve 4 жыл бұрын
That's partly true. This is especially the case with the board from what I've read. Only two of the Glazers, Avram and Joel are interested in football. The others couldn't care less. Some of them even had trouble understanding the concept of paying for transfers since that is not how it's done in US sports. That situation creates a problem because Avram and Joel are in a minority in the board so it can be a slog to get things through.

@@phillbozz853 I'll take the (real) Arab owners any day, they would not leverage the club to buy them. The debt put on by the Glazers has huge interest levels that the club needs to pay that goes out of the club each year. We would be the richest club in the world (not top 5) if we didn't have the debt put on the club the Glazers used to buy the club. I hate City but the structure of that club from a sporting perspective is now ahead of United. The advantage Fergie and Gill built up is gone and now United are playing catch up to City and even Liverpool (never thought I'd be saying this so soon after Fergie's retirement).

As pointed out, one of the biggest issues was the recruitment where players who could sell more shirts and bring in more endorsements was prioritized over players who would actually fit the system and improve the club. Since OGS came in though, it's visible that the approach has changed with the signing of young, hungry players who fit the system Ole is trying to play and as a fan, I'm pleased with the direction we're going in.
@ingsve
@ingsve 4 жыл бұрын
Ya, from all the stories in previous years it seems like the manager simply gave a bunch of names to Woodward and then just waited to see what they got. Even Van Gaal has said that he didn't really get the players he wanted. The difference now is that Ole seems much more involved in the process and he is much more adamant in getting his first choice rather than just dropping a few names and hoping for the best. I think the difference is that both Van Gaal and Mourinho was used to working under a director of football who would just take care of stuff like that but United doesn't have that structure so it's needed that the manager actually takes a more active role just like Ferguson did. That's what Ole seems to be doing. To me Ole is acting a lot more as a manager than either Van Gaal or Mourinho who seem to have acted more as head coaches than anything else which is also why a lot of structure at the club deteriorated especially under Mourinho since no one was overseeing the big picture.
@Writeous0ne
@Writeous0ne 4 жыл бұрын
well you might take this badly but... Aside from bruno fernandes i think your recruitment is still poor. for someone who is aiming to be a premier league and champions league contender. harry maguire is a solid defender yes but he's nowhere near 80 million, hes not even top 20 centre half in europe. daniel james has pace but hes never gonna get you more than 10 goals and assists a season. then theres the fact you still play lingaard and hes another daniel james who wont contribute many goals and assists. de gea has been average for a couple of seasons now. luke shaw is a liablity. rashford needs to play a full season in an attacking team. i think adding on to this OGS hasnt really got a style of football whats going to take MU anywhere, hes very conservative and defensive... quick counter attacks with average wingers wont work.
@ingsve
@ingsve 4 жыл бұрын
@@Writeous0ne Forget the price for Maguire that's irrelevant. If you instead look at CBs actually worth buying and that actually are available then there are not that many out there that are better. When you say Maguire is not even top 20 then I'm guessing you are counting a lot of players like Ramos, Chiellini or Pique who are not players you would even consider buying at their age. Add to that players from rivals such as Van Dijk who would never go to United from Liverpool then suddenly a lot of good CBs are simply not anyone you would consider buying. Remember also that Maguire was bought because the team needs leaders as well and not just for his abilities. James is a cheap player from the championship bought as a stop gap since we are desperate for wingers. He's not bought to be the one leading the team to league titles. Hopefully he will be along for the ride as a rotational player but if you think he's what United are pinning their hopes on then you are mistaken. Lingards time at United will not be long for this world. He has not stepped up this season and he will likely be sold in the summer.

@@ingsve yeah so basically everything i said is wrong? because you are biased? i think the reality is a lot of united fans are getting over hyped when nothings really changed. still not getting the best players, still spending ridiculous fees, still not playing a type of football whats going to make them rival liverpool and city etc. united need a better manager whos going to play a pressing attacking style. they need to get rid of all the dead wood and recruit younger players with some huge potential. with the set up liverpool and city have got right now, they are gonna be the big 2 for the next 5 years at least. united with OGS are going to be top 6 strugglers.
@ingsve
@ingsve 4 жыл бұрын
@@Writeous0ne Did I say everything you said was wrong? I was talking mostly about your comment that recruitment was still poor which I disagree with. I think Ole's recruitment has been spot on so far for what it is. I agree that there is still more work to be done. But I don't agree that any of the signings have been poor. I agree that Lingard is poor but I pointed out that that has nothing to do with Uniteds future since he will likely not be part of it. I agree that De Gea has been shaky. I wouldn't mind giving Henderson a chance to see how he handles it. Shaw has been very uneven but I think Williams gives options on the left so that's not the highest priority just yet. When it comes to Solskjaer I do agree that I'm biased and I do think he has a winning style of play but the team has not been able to implement it this season. We have lacked the midfield with confidence and creativity so the attack has stranded in midfield which has ruined any sense of style of play. So that's something that needs improvement but Bruno helps alot with that and Pogba could potentially as well when he's fit and playing.

Manchester United have approached several people including Pochettino, Rangnick, Darren Fletcher, Rio Ferdinand and Edwin Van der Sar for the role of sporting director but the consensus has been that United at this point lacks the structure to support a sporting director. Instead Ole has set himself with the task of future proofing the structure and opening up communication channels between the various departments. This includes revamping the transfers process so that there are now four different teams working on transfers. Two teams initiate deals and then Woodwards team steps in and finalizes the deals, then there is also an academy transfers team headed by Nicky Butt. As it stands it seems that more work is needed before a sporting director can he appointed.

GandWizard Bayern is not the problem. You have other clubs to worry about than just Bayern. That’s the problem: Other than Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, apart from Red Bull clubs, no German club will ever reach the league title. None of them will reach the Europa league. None of them will taste a trophy. If German clubs want to be Tottenham because that’s the only success they will ever get then by all means but why stop there? That’s the problem, the problem is the 50+1 rule. Again, apart from Bayern and Borussia Dortmund and other Red Bull clubs, any German club will never reach a title unless they have an owner. You can’t expect an owner to give you money for the club because he has 49% of the club. That’s what’s holding German clubs back. I’m not saying owners like Woodward and the MAN U board doing terrible things BUT that’s the gambling you’re willing to take and that’s why you have fans demand them OUT. That’s why Man U fans demand for a new owner. If German clubs find a new owner that is NOT competent, that’s just it.

So he has to settle for young league 2 players no disrespect to them but they would jump at the chance to play here and also the academy which those players can’t get you were you want to be. But since he played here and knows “the Manchester United way” he’s going to get more than enough time here when there are better coaches out like max allegri, MAYBE Diego Simeone and Rafael Benitez. Van gaal wanted to change the United way but the owners are stuck in their old ways which isn’t working anymore and you see what’s happening now

@@rushawntaylor9477 Maguire, Vanbisaka, Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho is most likely to join United than any other club. All these players were approached top European giants like Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea and others but they chose United who are currently playing in the Europa League. Before joining players and their agents see where the club intends to be in the future and Ole has a pretty convincing plan in place. At the moment every single player is linked with Manchester united for a reason. No matter how unlikely those transfers are, the fact that United is being linked to all these top players is because agents are willing to sell their players to a potential great team of players. I don't see many linked with Arsenal or Tottenham, given that they have some of the renowned managers in charge.

fernandes is still technically a signing that follows the model of signing high brow players. other clubs such as spurs and city already did the legwork and had heavily scouted him before moves fell through and united got the sloppy seconds. The whole of the video is to show that Man U still need a director of football, but have improved their structure at the same time, life after Mourinho, Boateng doesn't suit United's transfer philosophy, neither does Alderweirald, Maguire does, and maybe Mina, but would be a poor signing considering his injury record, and Man U want to copy a similar transfer philosophy to Liverpool, and it's about thinking, life after Jose, and Alderweirald and Boateng weren't the right signings, and we're rightfully not brought to the best of United, maybe not Jose, but United, the team is better than any of Mourinho's Man U squads, and improving, you can't say the same if Mourinho stayed, due to his short-termism

Sir Alex was the root of the club. When he retired, there were a lot of vacant places left which couldn't be filled by next manager or manager plus chief executive. United need a director of football, Edwin van der Sar is the best option in my opinion. Woodward can work with sponsorships whole DoF can work with transfers. José was unlucky in almost every area. Academy players in his reign were pretty avarage. They weren't given a chance is also mistake from management side. But still Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford had quality so they came up. Ole was under Sir Alex. He knows how the club and structure works. He restored academy, didn't sign superstars only, made players playing for the badge, positive environment, attacking football. United will be back in 2 seasons.

Manchester United can improve by better coaching. It's about first touch. Phelan and co teach backs and midfielders to have a negative first touch - control the ball, full-stop - then think what to do with it. But this is a counsel of despair. The first touch needs to be dynamic. If an opponent is charging towards you, go past them with your first touch. DO something, GO somewhere, preferably towards the opponents' goal. There's way too much passing sideways and backwards . . .

Despite not being a United fan. I've always maintained that since Ferguson's retirement in 2013, they should have appointment either a manager/player who had been at United or a manager who had a clear philosophy and could be improved by United and vice versa. But going from Moyes (which I'll never believe for a million years that he was Ferguson's main choice) to Mourinho has been a mess.

Always thought the player recruitment was not the problem, with United having signed some of the best players in their positions who regressed while at the club. Then after leaving, they pick up their previous good form: Depay, Di Maria, Zaha, Smalling, and Lukaku have been playing much better away from the club. This video may highlight the real problem or it may also be one of/ a mixture of 1. Poor coaching/ management of players 2. Pressure from playing at a huge club (from media, fans, pundits) 3. Internal turmoil/ lack of vision/ misaligned goals for staff and players.

I’ve heard news that Woodward has stepped away from recruitment and will only be involved in transfer negotiations but I refused to get excited about that news because we still don’t have a DOF and I don’t want him anywhere near negotiations. Woodward’s place at the club is concerned with finding our next noodle sponsor not major footballing decisions. If we’ve really changed then why are we, as one of the most powerful clubs in world football, still unable to snap some of the best sporting director money can afford within the blink of an eye. Things are only looking healthy enough for another false dawn and refuse to get excited until Woodward is back in a corner with of the marketing office crunching his calculator.

Woodward is not the problem in terms of negotiations. He is known as a very good negotiator. The real problem is Matt Judge. He's the incompetent one. There are some horror stories foalting around about him. "At one point United were trying to sign a very talented Center Back from a German Club. Matt Judge had him in the room with him and started asking him some absolutely ridiculous questions (where do you play, how many games have you played, what academy are you from). The players agent basically stood up and walked out with the player."

@iwantgoals1566 4 жыл бұрын
ingsve Yeah I heard Matt Judge is the guy that’s been giving out the stupid contract deals like Phil Jones on a 5 year deal and Sanchez half a million per week for 5 years. So long as Woodward and his gang of clowns like Matt Judge are no longer involved with key decision making and we have a DOF I’m happy. But the way I see it, there are green shoots of recovery but we’re not quite out of the woods yet.
