Man I love this information. Always wondered how people came up with the awesome breaks. I realize I definitely don’t play enough.

After decades of doing this , the first thing i look at is, what key is this tune ~, if you know that, then you know what your major and minor chords are, its a matter of perspective, thats what did it for me, from that perspective, all tunes are the same and follow the same rules, but the truly magic ingredient to become a great player is,,,,,, Play! find a way to fall in love with just playing, have fun,,i feel like this is obvious, players play, practicers practice, students study, but players play!!i feel like it is something that i have come to observe, the weird part is i feel like most people dont see it, i know too many folks that have been practicing and studying for decades and think if they keep at it the will finally get there, unfortunately almost none of them will get there, I believe the only way to get there is to play, there's nothing wrong with studying and practicing, i love it! But if you are not in love with PLAYING do you really think you will ever be a great player??try to be honest with yourself, maybe you love studying, or practicing, or collecting guitars, do you love to play?

I know somewhat who has had, takes lots of lessons but can't just sit and try things by themselves. Expecting a big breakthrough eventually from exactly the right teacher.😆

@@alan4sure yeah, that seems to be the mind set of a lot of people, I honestly believe that if you think of yourself as a player, things change, it's a game changer , its exactly what you said, sit and try things by themselves ! Time to take the training wheels off and go for a ride!!😀 have fun! Take a simple three chord tune, say,G,C and D, try to think, I'm going to play a little bit, throw some ideas at it , see what works, eventually you will connect the dots, see the patterns emerge, if it sounds good, its good!! PLAY around with what you've learned so far EXPERIMENT with the CAGED thing, modes, whatever, but Play, stay in the flow, this kind of crazy, I believe that if you try to play the craziest thing you can come up with if it sounds good, if you dig into the theory, you will find rules that support what you came up with, it's kind of weird, like if it sounds good the theory must support it, its interesting

I learned by ear and do it just the way you mention. Fairly easy for me now, and I assumed everyone could. Lol. Wrong. I sit with Strum machine playing basic 2 or 3 chord patterns for 15 or 20 mins, and figure out runs that fit.

It definitely doesn't come easy to everyone. It seemed easy to me, but I think I might have also just sounded bad for a long time and been too naive to know. I just watched Chris Eldridge's interview where he talks about how it took him a year to learn how to change chords at the right time! And now he's one of the best who ever played a guitar!
