How Can We Break the Pattern of Segregation in NYC Schools? |

New York City has a school segregation problem. It’s more segregated today than it was 30 years ago. And it’s not only racial segregation, it’s also economic. The concentration of poverty in our schools creates a never-ending cycle that goes beyond the classroom. And as Brooklyn continues to gentrify, the school divide is only getting worse.
The pressure is on for the city to help all of our students thrive, regardless of race or income. But there’s no easy solution. Should the city mandate school integration across the board? Should more money be spent improving our city’s failing schools? Or do we need to rethink the very mission of our school system? And finally, can leaders, educators and parents find common ground to make our city a model for the nation?
We’ve seen the impact of segregation in schools, and now, this is our chance to change course. BRIC TV & WNYC host this vital conversation.

Forced integration? I'll just put my kid in private school or homeschool them. You can't force me to integrate.

Thank you you for your honesty. Just an FYI, black and brown kids attend private school too so you may want to focus more on homeschooling. smh

It could just as easily be argued that some students became affluent later in life because they are highly intelligent and did well in school, and now their children having inherited their parents intelligence and discipline are now doing just as well themselves. Scholastic achievement came before socioeconomic attainment. Those students who were lower in intelligence and had less impulse control did not do so well in school, perhaps even dropping out and having a few kids. They ended up on welfare or working minimum wage jobs or doing drugs and abusing alcohol while their children, who inherited their parents high impulsivity and low intelligence entered the school system and are now failing the standardized tests.

15% of NYC schools are Asian-American yet no one here to represent them. Shameful and exclusionary

The reason is because they only represent 15% is why they are not represented. Let's be honest, Asian-American is not concerned about this issue at all. They have their schools and are educating their children to the highest level. The focus should be on black not brown but black children because at the end of the day, they are the ones who are getting the shortest end of the stick. Latinos are fine as well. Their children are bilingual and getting the help needed. In fact, in order to teacher, most posting require you to speak Spanish - yup, required.

Whites represent 14% of NYC students yet they get mentioned all the time. What's with the double standard? And any integration policies will affect Asians so they must be included in all discussions or it's exclusionary.

When Asian-American students make up over 70% of Stuyvesant and Bronx Sci, talking about "white" kids is having a dishonest conversation.

I have read Nikole Hannah-Jones since her Propublica days. She whitewashes Asian kids all the time. The best public schools in NYC (Stuyvesant, Bronx Sci, Brooklyn Tech) are majority Asian. If white people want the best schools, why are there more Asian kids at the best schools?

Some families have more evolved structures than do others. The relationship between parents and children has an impact on how much the child's innate capabilities are expressed. Black and brown families have more issues when it comes to family dynamics. Those problems have a negative affect on the performance of black and brown students which in turn has an effect on literacy and graduation rates, which in turn has an effect on employment opportunities. Which then leads to underachievement.

I'm all about changing the curriculum. Why are we still teaching that Columbus discovered America? Why are 99.5% of our achiever are white? I also want to focus on getting more black teachers. We never recovered from firing black teachers since the Brown vs The Bod of Ed. Lastly, we have to include black on all white committees to make this change. I am not talking about blacks who are scared to speak up because their job is in jeopardy. Why did this black woman lose her job after working for the DOE for 21 years? Where were the white teachers and parents that stood by her side to get her job back? Where was the UFT and the PTA? If it was the reverse, she would have been considered a hero for standing up to injustice. smh

Where are all the black teachers? "Sixty two percent of Black candidates, on average, do not qualify for a standard teaching licence because they do not pass the certification test. Hispanics fare better but still have a failure rate of 43 percent on the test. White teaching candidates have a failure rate of 25 percent. According to the report, “if the pass rate for black and Hispanic teacher candidates were comparable to white candidates, the diversity of the new teaching pool would increase by half.” goodschoolhunting.org/2019/03/unfair-chance-aspiring-teachers-set-fail-licensure-exams.html

Great job host. He kept things moving. I wish I would have directed this show. There were a few slow cues and why didn't you guys move the chair once the host got up? You would have gotten better shots. Overall, great job and nice transition from the B room to the main room and incorporated video. I also like how you had an mic on hand once the guest mic did not work. The directed just needed to be more quick with calling shots.

They are going to start enforcing new rules that force schools to be less oriented toward social status and grades background. That means that schools that took only the best students will be forced to accept lower scoring students. Also, their push for diversity also means busing kids again despite the fact tat they live on areas pf the city that are poorer than the schools they are going to go to. So, the problem with forcing desegregation by economic backgrounds also means that the parents that found these higher performing schools better than public schools that are based in the race or economics of the community will simply moved their kids and their money out seeking better schools. Sorry, diversity does not work even in symbolic ways like they have tried so far. real diversity only comes when parents and families improve their social status and are able to make the American Dream a reality and therefore improve the schools their children go to. You can only expect one group to give so much of their social status if the other group makes no effort to assimilate or improve themselves. People will be selfish and naturally seek the benefits that society applies to all who try to get it. Trying to force people to change the way humans are under pressure sadly backfires. It is as wrong for one group to take advantage of their status temporarily as it is for another to take some of them as a sympathy or guilt benefit for problems that are too complex to be fixed overnight. The so called segregation is the effect of socially marginalizing people in different places to benefit the system, which supports by both parties and burocrats that use the system to benefit themselves, it has been an American New York Problem since Immigrants began to arrive to New York.

When did it become acceptable to blame white educators for the failures of black students? You should all be ashamed of yourselves. The reason we have so few teachers of color is because the applicants keep failing the state teachers certification exams. What kind of teacher do you think they would make if they barely pass? www.wptv.com/news/local-news/investigations/minorities-are-disproportionately-failing-floridas-controversial-teacher-licensing-exam goodschoolhunting.org/2019/03/unfair-chance-aspiring-teachers-set-fail-licensure-exams.html www.the74million.org/more-than-half-of-aspiring-elementary-teachers-fail-americas-most-used-licensure-exam-new-nctq-report-finds/
