The reason she became the host is because she was chosen by the powers that be in control of the show. You make it sound as if he were kicked off. He wasn't. Retired paramedic here. It makes sense that shooting and stabbing victims may benefit from being drunk. A person who's been shot tends to be very... excited. Heart rate and blood pressure go up, which increases the bleeding. A certain degree of drunken mellowness could result in slower bleeding and an earlier stoppage of bleeding.
@issemayhem

Would the blood thinning effect of the alcohol mitigate that or is the thinning of the blood minor enough so as not to make a difference?
@donjones4719
@donjones4719 Жыл бұрын
@@issemayhem The blood thinning thing is a myth. When the alcohol molecules are absorbed thru the intestines into the bloodstream they constitute a a tiny, tiny fraction of the blood. There's no pharmacological interaction that I know of that would thin the blood, and I'm pretty sure I'd know of it. Long time alcoholics bleed easily, like people on prescription blood thinners. But neither have thin, i.e. diluted, blood. It's a misnomer. The meds affect the clotting factors in the blood, that's all. Alcoholics bleed because of various long term effects on their systems. For one thing, their skin gets thinner and more easily torn. Ditto for their vein walls.

@Don Jones RE:@@issemayhem I think Baksätet may be talking about liver damage caused by long term excessive alcohol misuse. The liver synthesises albumin (clotting factor), so a long-term alcoholic can bleed and bruise a lot more than you'd expect from the size of the injury. It's similar to what you might see in a haemophiliac (although not quite as severe as that, at least in my experience).

Many years ago, I worked in a liquor store. One day I had a customer come in with partially-cooled roofing tar coating his arm and a scent disturbingly similar to a barbecue wafting from him. He'd just been burned because the tar pot they were using to re-coat a roof with waterproofing had developed an air bubble in the tar, which had burst and splashed him with a hefty dose of molten tar. He wanted to buy a six-pack of beer and a pint of whisky because, he told me, he had no intention of being sober when they peeled the tar off of him at the hospital. I hope it helped, although according to this information, it apparently didn't have as much beneficial effect on burn outcomes as other injuries. It did teach me that I never, ever want to work around roofing tar, though.

Always shop for whiskey before going anywhere! One of the most remarkable times that whiskey has saved my life happened in February 11, 2014 during a visit to Bowling Green, Kentucky. I was in town with a colleague that wanted to go and see the corvette museum while we were in town. I agreed to go, but requested that we go to the liquor store and get whiskey first , because the hotel did it have a bar and well, I wanted my whiskey. We arrived at the museum and were told they were closing in 30 minutes for the day, at which I said we could come back tomorrow. We arrived the next day and found the place closed to tours. The press crew were there to report on the sink hole collapse that occurred over night. I knew instantly that my priorities were in correct order.

My late father came across a chap in the army (WWll) who had an abdominal op for some reason I forget and doctors discovered he had had a burst appendix some time in the past. Turned out he had severe stomach pain one night but couldnt afford time off work. Luckily he had a bottle of whisky which he drank yo kill the pain. The appendix is connected to the lower intestine and shares contents with it. I am dubious that spirits would travel that far down, but it is certainly not imposible. More likely the anesthetic effect was enough that he was able to pass through the crisis of fever and infection and recover, as a burst appendix is not automatically fatal, although it sure is EXTREMELY dangerous. There are a fair few documented cases of of finding just a lump of healed scar tissue when guddling arround in there.

The ethanol reacted with the diabetic medication to form formaldehyde apparently. That’s why they always tell you the side effects of drugs and things you aren’t supposed to do while taking them I guess. A side effect of some steroids is extreme sun sensitivity, meaning you can get a sunburn in minutes of indirect sunlight. Interestingly, methanol poisoning would also have the same treatment (drinking high-proof liquor/ethanol).

I had seen this episode, but forgotten the whisky drip, and assumed this was going to be about the cook on the Titanic. There's a story about the cook on the Titanic, who got absolutely plastered drunk while the ship was sinking, and his blood alcohol level was so high, that he was essentially insulated from the cold and didn't suffer hypothermia, like a great deal of unfortunate passengers.
@Liammort
@Liammort Жыл бұрын
Sadly drink doesn't prevent hypothermia, it just stops you from feeling the cold. Many people have been out drinking in winter and been found dead with their clothes next to them. Booze helping you feel warm makes you not wrap up properly combined with the blood vessels opening up during hypothermia, makes you feel even warmer. So you take your shirt or light coat off and freeze.
@fightthepowerman

Thats bs. Alcohol speeds up the effects of hypothermia due to dilating your blood vessels. Alcohol can preserve things... But that would be like embalming yourself while still alive... I can't believe they didn't mention the fact that alcohol brings down blood pressure and slows the cardiac rhythm so when someone is in a situation in which they could lose a lot of blood after being wounded, it gives more time for assistance to be given or procedures to be performed before someone bleeds out, besides the fact that alcohol allows for the person to remain relatively calm due to either being unaware of the gravity of the situation or being mentally and physically numbed by the alcohol (and therefore not panicking, running or increasing movement which increases the heart rate and could lead to a person bleeding out faster.)

Being drunk can also save your life in a car crash. When you have an impact it’s your instinct to tense up but this makes it easier for the forces to emanate your body. But when you’re drunk your body forgets to tense up and this allows your body to better move the forces and it all just goes right through you. This is why when someone is drunk driving the drunk driver often survives a crash but not the person they hit. So that’s another way whiskey could save your life. Patient - Doctor, I've literally drunk SO MUCH alcohol that I have gone blind, help! Doctor - I think what you need is some MORE alcohol, trust me I'm a doctor! Once again the Simpsons got it exactly right, Alcohol - the Cause Of and Solution To all of life's problems!

Could there be an evolutionary component, whereby more young intoxicated people survive to procreate? (I can hear Attenborough's voice "Here we find the endangered teetotaler..." with no end of potential for finishing that sentence.) Or, to counter that... do more intoxicated people find themselves in those situations to start with, which enabled them to have such a significant cohort for their study?

No, yes, this is absolutely right. Because I've never been drunk, never liked the taste of alcohol, (and don't say it has no flavour), and I've never been seriously injured.

And, if you're going off on a risky expedition to the arse-end of beyond, make sure you take an Islay single malt (a miniature is fine) and a can of Coke. If hopelessly stranded, proceed to mix the two of them together. When somebody shows up and scowls at you reproachfully, which will inevitably happen - even if you're on fucking Jupiter - you can ask them for help.

Another appearance where Sandi auditioned without knowing anything about it. It's no wonder John Lloyd wanted her in the chair after Stephen left.

Had a guest at a house warming party on the fourth floor of an apartment complex, who ended up being black-out drunk. The evening went on, and then he fell from the balcony onto a very shallow patch of snow. He got up after 10 seconds, checked his limbs, and then yelled upwards "I need another drink".

Im surprised about the "being shot" statistic as I would have thought the blood thins with alcohol, so my asumption would be you would bleed out quicker.
@fuckel98
@fuckel98 Жыл бұрын
Indeed your blood would be thinner but as they said with the alcohol essentially anesthetizing the entire body to a degree it reacts in a calmer manner to the trauma you even consciously react in a calmer manner to the trauma if you are heavily drunk because you are very lethargic at the time it kind of overpowers the adrenaline rush you would normally get when going through a traumatic experience like being shot because you're not freaking out consciously about what just happened panicking is what really causes you to bleed faster your heart starts pumping a lot faster when you start to freak out

Yeah. I know tattoists don't like to - or just flat *_won't_* - tattoo a person who's been drinking. Partly because of increased risk of "Buyer's Remorse when they get sober, but mostly because of the amount they bleed.

Shock and trauma effects would be mitigated short term by intoxication, but that same intoxication may have gotten you into trouble in the first place... Kind of a chicken and the egg scenario, what came first. (Spoiler alert, it was the egg :p)

Kevin Smith (Bob from Jay and Silent Bob, Clerks, Dogma and much more) survived a heart attack because he had smoked weed, which kept him calm as it was happening. This gave the medics time to get him to hospital and operate. His doctor asked him how he remained so calm, stating it had saved his live, to which Smith answered he was really stoned.
