The best answer to a question I’ve heard and asked “how do you develop YOUR sound?”

Dude thanks for sharing! Hank Mobley is by far the coolest player ever, back when I was in school I listened to that album "Soul Station" on repeat. I even printed that album cover on a shirt haha. Transcribed his solos for "If I should lose you", "Remember" and "Dig Dis", learned so much from his phrasing alone. Had a similar experience with Grant Green's guitar solos

Kiefer, you gotta convince Adam M over at "You'll Hear It" to respond to my speak pipe on what Hip Hop and Rap can teach aspiring jazz musicians--getting beyond the (C)rap generalizations. The rhythmic, dynamic, and phraseology is what makes all those note choices POP. I often think of comparing Busta Rhymes to Charlie Parker--it's beyond the notes. Or how about Black Thought's verbal complexity to Coltrane's sheets of sound? Over analysis in music usually means, "you played the Locrian Natural 2 and back cycled to the ii" (nerdy voice). People love to talk theory instead of playing and internalizing the stuff they like--that's analysis paralysis and it's really easy to do. You're talking about HOW we play the notes and phrases, not the actual notes. Yes, Wynton Kelly had that Caribbean swing thing going that NO ONE could imitate.

For guitarists (or anyone really) - I really recommend checking out Shane Theriot. For me one of the most "dynamic" guitar players ever

Great point, and underdiscussed, however, isn't there a risk to over interpret? Just like a potential subliminal meaning in book or movie?

Yes! That is a valid point. However, I do not see that as a problem that exists with upcoming improvising musicians. I feel like most aspiring musicians fail to interpret much beyond notes, chord changes, and these greats just sounding "killing". I think that's what I'm getting at.

This must be why so many cover songs don’t quite sound right despite all the correct notes being played
