Beatlemania was available at US military bases in 1964. My father bought a copy in 1964, and he still has it to this day. My grandfather was in the Air Force during the 1950s and 1960s, and my dad said they would have to move to different military bases every few years. When I was kid, I always thought it was a strange version of Meet the Beatles. Years later, I discovered it was a Canadian varaint of With the Beatles.

Hi, you may call this a nitpick if you wish, but since the Canadian release was first, barely after the U.K. original, the U.S. "meet the..." is actually the variant of both.

The Beatles were a big thing in Canada some time before they were on the Ed Sullivan Show...I know that because I remember it..! Here in Canada, we were still closely linked to the U.K., and were regularly exposed to BBC and other British programming like Tops of the Pops, Coronation Street etc...re-broadcast by our own CBC. I have many of each of those early Canadian Capitol Beatles pressings, and I'm looking forward to part 2...! Thanks from Canada...!

The Red Target mono is the best Cdn pressing imo. It's a second pressing, late 60's. She Loves You was massive in Canada. And because of The Beatles early success in Canada, it became a marketing tool to introduce many U.K. bands into the U.S. market. It wasn't unusual for bands such as Supertramp, The Police, Rory Gallagher etc to schedule a Canadian tour before they ever played the U.S.

In Dec 1962 CFRB 1010 AM had a radio program " Calling All Britons" which had news stories,music etc from England. On one of the shows in Dec1962 the program host had received a single Love Me Do/PS I Love You on Parlaphone and played both sides. It was the 1st time the Beatles record was played in North America. Apparently George's uncle who had immigrated to Canada had sent the single to the station to play.

That photo of George in NY was gold. I’m learning more and more every time I watch your videos. It seems like Beatles books and documentaries seem to dismiss what actually happened from the start in Canada and the US. It’s crazy how Dexter rejected The Beatles 3+ times before being forced to sign them, then he started kissing ass big time

You are absolutely right Donald F Dave Dexter hadn’t been so snooty on this group called the Beatles, then they would’ve been a great success earlier, but it’s a good thing that the Beatles stood up for the capital records albums because they didn’t like the way that capital records weren’t manufacturing those albums since they’re very different from 1964 up until 1966. Now the Beatles music is so timeless and your music while I’m on forever. I have to agree with you it was crazy what Dave dexter did not only rejecting the Beatles, but being so high in mind that he thought he knew better as far as album covers go.

I’m American, but was born too late, 96 lol So of course I didn’t know about the differences until much later. I’ve always preferred the UK studio albums. Although Meet The Beatles and Beatles’ 65 feel like true Beatles album, and let’s not forget the Magical Mystery Tour LP, which came as a shock to me to be a US release and of course became a staple in The Beatles catalog in the 80s. The Early Beatles has a very fun track listing. But albums like Beatles VI and Yesterday And Today don’t flow right at all and feels like a slap in the face from Capitol. But I love collecting all the different records after the fact:)
@amb2745
@amb2745 2 жыл бұрын
@@donald60s14 The UK Magical Mystery Tour was a two EP set of songs from the movie Magical Mystery Tour. In America, EP's were tried by Capitol Records twice and failed. While it wasn't what The Beatles wanted, Capitol put the MMT songs on one side, then all of the 1967 A and B sides of their singles on the othe side. This release was heavily imported into the UK in the '70's, and was given an official release there. This version of MMT was adopted for CD release when The Beatles CD's came out in 1987.

The world really benefited from Mr. White's ties to the UK. As for Dexter's role in the US, I can't believe, with a commodity like Capitol records, that he didn't have an internal "sounding board" group of people or a panel that could sort out favorable records for the commercial 45 market. Leaving it up to one guy seems as though it would be impossible for a company the size of Capitol. It took the Beatles' worldwide dominance to beat Dexter down.

Dexter Jr. was not alone for rejecting The Beatles in advantage to predict that they would be a world's most top selling band. Dick Rowe at UK's Decca records also goes down in history as the head A&R who rejected the New Years Day 1962 recordings, even though second in command Mike Smith at Decca Records suggested they were good enough for the label. "Groups with guitars are on their way out, Mr. Epstein, perhaps you should go back to selling records in your record store," was an infamous quote from Dick Rowe. George Harrison later told Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones to take up on the offer at Decca Records that previously rejected The Beatles. Decca, now reeling from envy as a result of seeing instant success that EMI/Parlophone was having with The Beatles first album in early 1963 instantly snapped up The Rolling Stones for a contract.

@@danielwarren3138 Yes, I agree. The Decca sessions were pretty amateurish compared to the brilliance they would unleash 10 months later with "Love Me Do." Still, if only Dick Rowe could see the future at the time that The Beatles would improve within months, particularly replacing Pete Best with Ringo Starr. It was a controversial decision made by The Beatles & George Martin, but still it was essential to their evolution as a band.

It appears The Beatles were starting to get a fair amount of airplay on Canadian radio in late 1963. As I recall, in the US Billboard magazine sometimes tracked hits by local regions. In late 1963, did audiences in the US border cities of Detroit and Buffalo become Beatles fanatics before Beatlemania hit the rest of the USA a couple of months later?

beatstonemargoForum Resident Location:London, Ontario, Canada A 1st generation Canadian fan here who experienced Beatlemania as it happened. I was 11 years old in 1963, when here in Canada, Capitol fuelled our experience earlier than in the US with those three unique LPs and the first four UK 45s before Capitol US forced us to march along in lock step. Even so, Capitol Canada still managed to release a few more unique 45s, some of which found themselves onto the US market. I'm still a fan that enjoys the Beatles' music as much now as then...probably more, as at my age, nostalgia becomes an influencing factor as well.

To put it in context of what the Beatles were up against on the Radio in London Ontario (but worked in their favor) - London is just 2 hours north of Detroit.. and everyone in London could catch Detroit Michigan radio all day, all night and guess what that consisted of, heavy soul from Motown and rock n roll... - and that's what got people noticing the Beatles, that Motown influence. So it was a bit of lucky positioning there.

As a Canadian these were the records I grew up on. My sister had the “ She Loves You” single and she borrowed, Beatlemania!, her friend across the road, while owning, Long Tall Sally. The mono versions of all the Canadian albums were re-pressed and re-released in 1976 (7?) during a Beatles resurgence sparked by the releases of Live at the Hollywood Bowl, Rock n’ Roll, and Star Club. I bought these copies. It is these copies one sees the most in used record racks. Occasionally I see earlier pressings but the quality is usually terrible. People PLAYED Beatles albums. Great episode! This Canuck says thanks!

Andrew, it's debatable whether The Beatles would have broken through in the States any earlier than they did. Dave Dexter's attitude was indicative of the overall proprietary and arrogant attitude regarding pop music in the American music industry at that time. Don't forget that, once Capitol exercised their right of first refusal, EMI tried to interest other record companies in The Beatles and only found takers in small labels like Swan and Vee-Jay. As with a lot of things about the Beatles' supernatural story, timing was everything. The Kennedy Assassination really threw America wide open for The Beatles in January of 1964. Great channel, by the way.

That is true Benedict, and capital were forced to sign the Beatles and they were forced to release I wanna hold your hand, because by that time back in late December 1963 the beetle mania cannot be ignored what was all over Europe and thankfully I wanna hold your hand broke them in America and Beatlemania wasn’t full swing at that time.. even George Martin the Beatles producer was so frustrated by this that he thought to himself if capital records in the US is not gonna put out the records out now then other record labels wouldn’t deny the Beatles so George Martin make negotiations with one and the J although they why not big record labels but small ones but when the Beatles came to America the rest as they say it’s history.

Hi Ben. You make a good point, but I think it's fair to say that if a juggernaut like Capitol had given the Beatles an early promotional push, the inevitable dam burst would have happened sooner. From what I've seen, a lot of Rock&Roll records from before this time were on smaller and more youth oriented labels like Cameo-Parkway, Liberty, Sun, Clock, etc. Even Elvis and Johnny Cash had to prove themselves on Sun before being taken by major labels. Maybe Capitol, at least in the USA, focused on the easy-listening market until they stumbled on the lucrative deals with groups like the Beatles and Beach Boys .

Smitten we went looking for a record. There was I Want to Hold Your Hand with its iconic B&W picture sleeve. I recall a slight let down that it wasn’t the song we’d heard on TV but that Swan 45 was only another week away. When Meet The Beatles showed up in a record shop window in Jan 1964. Late to the party here but...Great vid as always. I thought I'd add some SQ comments on Beatlemania! With The Beatles in its stereo pressing mix. I've owned lots of stereo copies of With The Beatles over the years -- a UK EMI one box, various Japan presses, the MFSL, but the only one(s) I've kept were the Canadian Beatlemania! With The Beatles on the purple Capitol label. To my ears this issue is hands down the most satisfying listen if one wants stereo. If I were looking for one now, I would not concern myself whether it was the wide, narrow or hybrid. What makes this issue so special is the tonality. Whatever the Canadian engineers were doing in 1978, it came out spot on right IMO, so much so I sold off my UK EMI one box, which sounded far more compressed to me and somehow not nearly as satisfying. Nostalgia note -- when I first started getting interested in collecting Beatles records (at around age 12 in 1972), as an American, those Canadian only issues seemed like a rare, unobtainable treasure. I saw Beatlemania! With The Beatles, Twist And Shout and Long Tall Sally up on a wall display at a record store back then and wanted them so badly. I guess it was just the appearance, which made the look like something new, different, even exotic. I already know all the tracks, but...were they somehow different? What kept me back was they were rare, imported and priced accordingly, i.e. not within the range of someone's whose budget was his allowance. Since then, well, the covers are cool but the sound quality...you can find better elsewhere IMO. About 20 years ago I picked up a mono of Long Tall Sally and it didn't do much for me so I sold it on.

Our early acceptance of The Beatles helps explain how many local Canadian bands had begun adopting the Liverpool Beat style into their own long before February '64. A beat up copy of the 6000 Series Long Tall Sally LP was one of my earliest Beatles records (in the 1970s), and I'm always upgrading my copies of those first three Canadian albums. Beatlemania is a particularly nice-sounding version of Meet the Beatles, and can still be found for a reasonable price, along with LTS and Twist & Shout. There's a whole website dedicated to the 6000 Series, and it's amazing some of the stuff that was issued here, I remember my mom having the Ruby Murray record (T-6001) and I still see the George Formby LP around on a regular basis. I've got many 6000 Series LPs by Cliff Richard, Dave Clark Five, Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas, the Hollies and more, usually with unique artwork and bold mono sound. Worth a trip over the border to hunt down (when conditions permit, that is)!

Hey,Andrew-I had all 9 of the 72000 45's as well,Secret(72159),being the toughest.Back in the 80's at one of the Jersey Beatlefest,a guy named Gip showed me a photo of a rare sleeve he had.It was an All My Loving sleeve.??????Yes,it exists.Discogs has a photo and story on it.It was a limited run print done by a Philly outfit to be paired up with the import.It disclaims "of canada"under the logo.It is identical to the "Can't Buy Me Love"sleeve with the rounded font,unlike the "Hold Your Hand"stick font.The catalogue number font is different though.a

I love the Beatles and the documentary on the Canadian versions of their early albums was informational. Shame on Dave Dexter for passing on the Fab Four. I myself don't know why he still was working for Capitol USA when they exploded in the US and had to release their music and all the other rock and pop artists' music that came after that. Paul White (RIP) should have replaced him since he was instrumental in bringing the Beatles to North America and did a great job in bringing other British acts to North America, but I imagine the corporate structures of the two Capitol divisions were different in their approach, and Paul was more suited for the Canadian market. I would love to see you do one on the fall of Capitol/EMI and being sold to UMG (Universal Music Group), and how they were instrumental in their acquisition of the Beatles music catalog from Sony.

Well done Andrew. I've been trying for a few years to educate folks on Canadian Beatle albums. You've done a solid job here. One correction is with the comment on the Don't Bother Me mistake mix. That is actually found on a 1983 3rd generation purple label Capitol Canada pressing of Meet The Beatles, not Beatlemania. Thanks for a great video.

This is a GREAT video! I’m becoming more and more impressed over the amount of research and care that is put into every video. I mean, not only do you give us information about the Beatles, you also talk about the world surrounding them, different kinds of people (like other artists from that (wonderful) time) and the different situations that comes up. You also convey the information in such a wonderful manner, that just makes you understand and get things. For example: all the uk singles thrown in the thrash together, earlier in the video (around the 8 minute mark)… so good! It really brings out the message! I also love that you’ve got the records on hand, instead of having to show low resolution photos from the web. Exited for part 2! I bet it will be just as great! :)

I brought up the subject of the sleeve to my record buddy in Toronto,Piers Hemmingsen.Great guy and he wrote a few books on Canadian Capitol Beatle records and promotions.He gave me credit for the alert,but at the time,it was based on the photo I saw in the 80's solely.Ive now seen the photo on Discord the other day to substantiate this.Im talking to Bruce Spizer about it to see if he came across one.Only 700 were ever pressed.He did the excellent VJ,Capitol,Swan Song, Parlophone and Apple books.

@00:38.." 'She Love You' was a #1 hit in Canada two months before 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' hit #1 in the US". I don't think that's so. Have you seen charts that show that? My memory is that Beatles singles were being played to some extent on radio in Canada in the summer and fall of 1963, but they were still an 'unknown' group and I don't think any songs reached #1 before early 1964. I think 'She Loves You' was played more prominently and earlier in Canada than in the US, but it didn't become a real hit until 'Beatlemania' became a thing in both countries in December '63 / January '64 . My memory is that it was bubbling up and getting real attention around November 1963, but then got overwhelmed in the frenzy over the release of 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' in December. I think it only had a limited time at #1 (maybe late Dec or early Jan?) before being overtaken by IWHYH - a great injustice IMO. 🙂 But those are 60 year-old memories...

Thanks Andrew for this video (and the other one talking about the US Capitol albums). The Parlophone albums were of course the "real thing", but I have always been fascinated with the Capitol releases. The birth of my Beatles fandom in 1987 coincided with a campaign by a local Finnish department store chain, which imported huge amounts of Canadian pressings of the Beatles albums and sold them at a very reasonable price. As I was trying to get hold of the Beatles catalogue as cheaply as possible I bought several of those, including the Capitol versions of Help and Rubber soul (it took a while for me to realize the differences between the Capitol and Parlophone releases of these albums) and Beatlemania - With the Beatles. When the cd's came along I discarded the Capitol albums but now the vinyl revival has made me start my Beatles vinyl collection again. Instead of going the politically correct way and buying the Parlophone catalogue, I have got myself a mixed set of Parlophone, Capitol (both US and Canada) and Apple (the Us, Canadian and European versions) albums. The story, the different track listings and covers and of course the infamous mixing decisions are a time machine that takes me over the Atlantic to an era before my birth. I can put myself in the shoes of the US and Canadian Beatles fans of the time and try to imagine what it was like to get these albums and listen to them for the first time. The Beatles world would be so much less interesting if the Beatles albums were released identically all over the world.

How did Dave Dexter manage to avoid being fired by Capitol the second the Beatles became successful in Canada, let alone in the United States? Could they not see that he was an idiot, and had turned the band down at least three times? I'd be fascinated to know how he kept his job. At least Dick Rowe redeemed himself by signing the Rolling Stones. I know having the Stones doesn't nearly compare to having the Beatles on your label, but they were an adequate consolation prize. The fact that Dexter ever benefited in any way, which he surely did, from the Beatles massive success makes me sick to my stomach.

Excellent work Andrew. From a collector perspective, two interesting Beatlemania variations are (1) copies on the rainbow label, with no visible track band between tracks 6 and 7 on side 1; and (2) copies on the green target label, which had been discontinued but was used on a handful of copies when Beatlemania was reissued in 1971 after an informal hiatus following the 1967 release of Meet The Beatles. I suspect that this was a decision to use up old label stock (record companies were notorious penny pinchers), rather than a production error at the pressing plant.

10:07 I've heard that some records from the 1960s actually had bits of labels from recycled discs floating around in them, causing an occasional pop. I wonder if any record manufacturers considered labels made of colored vinyl (or polystyrene) instead of paper; it might still look a bit odd, but at least it wouldn't degrade the audio quality.
