Canadians take a lot of steps trying to protect themselves from fraud, but anyone can still be blindsided when it comes to their own home through what's known as title fraud.
There have been a couple of high-profile investigations led by Toronto police in the past months and there has been an increase in title fraud cases in the Greater Toronto Area. This type of fraud by definition is when a scammer steals the title to someone else's home, allowing them to sell it or apply for a new mortgage against it.
Shallima Maharaj reports on how Canadians can protect themselves against this type of fraud and what the fraudsters are often looking for when they attempt this type of identity theft.

Why can't it be mandatory to meet in person to seal the deal? Especially with the amount of money involved. These mortgage companies should take some of the blame for these situations happening. They should do a lot more to ensure they're talking to the right person.

Don't fully pay your mortgage, the bank watches the title very closely so this will not happen to a bank. It appears to only happen to people that have the home paid off and no liens (car loans etc) against it.

Mortgage fraud is the biggest problem right now in Canada and is affecting canadians negatively. To stop the mortgage fraud financial regulators need to set up a process where banks in Canada have to take income verification documents from CRA to process mortgage applications. This is imperative now and goverment need to step up to stop the fraud

We are career bank employees. We know the importance of government issue ID. Our new neighbors daughter applied for a new drivers license under our address under the guise of her living next door and it being a typo. They're address is 81, ours is 79. We called Transport Canada who told us it was a misdelivered mail and to send it back as misdelivered despite my warnings it was potential fraud. I called the police who firmly demanded it was just a typo and advised we give them the license. that would give a person a drivers license with a fraudulent address. Here in lies how simple identity theft is happening.

because this industry is still doing it by trusting. LOL, we Canadians are known to be the biggest guidable idiots in the world. that is why we get targeted so much. All transactions should be done in person, but government does not care, as long as they get the transfer tax. All transfers of title should be mandatory done in person.
