A recent transfer strategy that focused on signing the very best young talents across the world is starting to bear fruit at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Real Madrid able to field a world class first eleven of players with an average age under 25. To go with this new generation, Real Madrid also have their old guard still at the club which gives Carlo Ancellotti a number of tactical options. To manage the incredible midfield roster, the Italian has mentioned playing 4 midfielders in most matches but how will this look? Today Statman Dave takes a look at how Ancelotti will setup Real Madrid this season, going through a number of different elevens and lineups that we could see in the 23/24 season…

RB Leipzig video would be good, they sold Szoboszlai, Nkunku, Laimer, maybe Gvardiol and/or Simakan but brought in some great replacements with Baumgartner, Sesko, Openda, Simons, Seiwald, Carvalho and Bitshiabu.

Mbappe is just made for this team, they would be absolutely crazy with Vini Mbappe Rodrygo when their midfield is already so solid

It's difficult to predict how Real will set up as don carlo doesn't really have a clear philosopy as opposed to a manager like Pep, however he is excellent at managing to create a system in which players can thrive, playing in a role best suited for them and the team. However this tactical freedom for players did cost them sometimes last year, like the second game against city, where the lack of structure lead to the front 3 occupying similar spaces, meaning the first line of press was very easily broken, while at the same time when on the ball they were easy to mark/defend. Also in some games last year you can see their midfield and defense being extremely open which on the ball is not necessarily bad however off the ball having players like modric who despite his brilliance doesn't cover as much space due to his age is dangerous. This is why I think Bellingham is perfect. Yes he is creative, technical and so on, but the sheer amount of space he covers in a game is ridiculous, meaning Real will have the benefits of Ancelloti's free flowing fluid football along with excellent coverage in transition. As to how they will set up I can't really make a prediction but I will give my opinion. Since Real don't have a traditional striker except Joselu, who isn't on par with the quality of other players on the team I would use Rodrygo as a false nine seeing that he covers central spaces even when playing as a winger with vini on the left and brahim diaz on the right with valverde as the right side 8 or vice versa as both can play either role. As the left side 8 Bellingham with a more creative player like modric as the pivot. Then a back four with Camavinga inverting whenever belling ham drifts wide and carvajal being the third cd or even providing width higher up. So basically a fluid 4-3-3 with emphasis on rotations between players. Finally I believe a minimum width front line would suit real perfectly as vinicius would be always in a dangerous position in transition and on the ball, players could pass and rotate between them more easily as they will be closer together and their counterpresss would be lethal, considering the number of good ballwinners on the team. I know I wrote a lot, I got kind of carried away lol

Under researched video. Kroos and Modric can't start together now. Kroos with his distribution and maintaining tempo is best suited among the two to pair with that young mid. Then 442 diamond, which we played under Zidane in 2016-17, with Isco as the diamond, is the go-to formation for now. Jude taking the Isco role and Kroos, Cama and Fede/Tchou with Vini and Rodrygo at the top. Fran as LB and Alaba-Militao as CBs. All this assuming Mbappe isn't coming this summer.

3 at the front for me: VINI-RODRYGO-BRAHIM. 3 mids for me: BELLINGHAM-CAMAVINGA-VALVERDE. I do not want to see modric & kroos start anymore we need to move on from that shit especially kroos, defensively hes a liability its like playing with a man down when we have kroos in the line up.

I hope Madrid goes to 3-4-3. The midfield is the strongest link and the greatest depth and they need to utilize that area with more players. 4-3-3 would make sense if they had the same skillful offensive fullbacks like they had back in the day with Marcelo that has already left and Carvajal being in decline, fran garcia is practically unproven in the big stages. Therefore 4-3-3 is pretty obsolete. The defensive line they should play with Alaba, Rudiger and Militao. If they tactically need to switch into a more defensive approach in the mids of a game, they just remove one of the CD and one midfielder than bring in two fullbacks on each flank.

Not particularly crazy when I think about but I'd love to see a 3-2-3-2. Hold on let it sink in. I'll stagger the advanced midfielders to cover the wings on defence.😅

I believe Real can change formations and tactics often during the game. All of their players are very adaptable and smart. We may also see a few games with ‘super sub’ moments where younger players may be thrown into the fray; even starting eleven against weaker opponents.
